Lament Over Fallen Babylon

After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.

1

Після цього побачив я іншого ангола, що схо́див із неба, і що вла́ду велику він мав. І земля освітилась від слави його.

2

With a mighty voice he shouted:
“ ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’a
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.

І він гучним голосом кликнув, говорячи: „Упав, упав великий Вавилон! Став він оселею де́монів, і схо́вищем усякому ду́хові нечистому, і схо́вищем усіх пта́хів нечистих та нена́видних,

For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,
and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

бо лютим вином розпусти своєї він напоїв всі наро́ди! І зе́мні царі з ним розпусту чинили, а земні купці збагатіли від сили розко́ші його!“

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“ ‘Come out of her, my people,’b
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;

І почув я інший голос із неба, який говорив: „Вийдіть із нього, люди мої, щоб не сталися ви спільника́ми гріхів його, і щоб не потра́пили в кара́ння його.

5

for her sins are piled up to heaven,
and God has remembered her crimes.

5

Гріхи бо його досягли́ аж до неба, і Бог згадав про неправди його.

6

Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back double for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.

Відплатіть ви йому, як і він вам платив, і вдвоє подвойте йому за вчинки його! Удвоє налийте до чаші, що нею він вам наливав!

7

Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;c
I will never mourn.’

Скільки він сла́вив себе та розкошува́в, стільки му́ки та смутку завдайте йому! Бо в серці своєму гово́рить: „Сиджу́, як цариця, і я не вдова, і бачити смутку не бу́ду!“

8

Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Через це одного дня при́йдуть кари його, смерть, і плач, і голод, і спа́лений буде огнем, бо міцни́й Господь, Бог, що судить його!“

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.

І будуть плакати та голосити за ним царі земні, що з ним розпусту чинили та розкошува́ли, коли побачать дим пожежі його.

10

Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:
“ ‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,
you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour your doom has come!’

Вони через страх його мук стоятимуть зда́лека та говоритимуть: „Горе, горе, о місто велике, Вавилоне, місто могутнє, бо суд твій прийшов однієї години!“

11

“The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore —

І земні купці́ будуть плакати та голосити за ним, бо ніхто не купує вже їхнього вантажу́, —

12

cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;

вантажу́ золота, і срі́бла, і камі́ння дорогоцінного, і пе́рел, і віссо́ну, і порфі́ри, і шовку, і кармази́ну, і всякого дерева запашно́го, і всякого по́суду з слоно́вої кости, і всякого по́суду з дорогоцінного дерева, і мідяного, і залізного, і мармуро́вого,

cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.

і кори́ці, і шафра́ну, і па́хощів, і мирри, і лива́ну, і вина, і оливи, і тонко́ї муки́, і пшениці, і товару, і овець, і ко́ней, і возів, і рабів, і душ лю́дських.

14

“They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’

І плоди́ пожадли́вости душі твоєї відійшли від тебе, і все сите та світле пропало для тебе, — і вже їх ти не зна́йдеш!

15

The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn

Купці цими реча́ми, що вони збагати́лися з нього, від стра́ху мук його стануть здалека, і бу́дуть плакати та голосити,

16

and cry out:
“ ‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!

і казати: „Горе, горе, місто велике, зодягнене в віссо́н і порфіру та в кармази́н, і прикрашене золотом і дорогоцінним камі́нням та пе́рлами,

17

In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’
“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.

бо за одну годину згинуло таке велике багатство“. І кожен стерни́к, і кожен, хто пливає на кораблях, і моряки, і всі, хто працює на морі, — стали здалека,

18

When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’

18

і, бачивши дим від пожежі його, кричали й казали: „Котре до великого міста подібне?“

19

They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out:
“ ‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’

І вони поси́пали по́рохом го́лови свої, і закричали, пла́чучи та голо́сячи, і ка́жучи: „Горе, горе, місто велике, що в ньому з його дорогоцінностей збагати́лися всі, хто має кораблі на морі, бо за одну годину воно спорожні́ло!

20

“Rejoice over her, you heavens!
Rejoice, you people of God!
Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”

20

Радій з цього, небо, і святі апо́столи та пророки, бо Бог виконав суд ваш над ним!“

21

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said:
“With such violence
the great city of Babylon will be thrown down,
never to be found again.

І один сильний ангол узяв великого каменя, як жо́рно, і кинув до моря, говорячи: „З таким розго́ном буде кинений Вавило́н, місто велике, — і вже він не зна́йдеться!

22

The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.

І голос гуслярі́в, і співакі́в, і сопі́льників, і сурмачі́в уже не буде чутий в тобі! І вже не зна́йдеться в тобі жодного мистця́ й ніякого мисте́цтва, і шум жо́рен уже не буде чутий в тобі!

23

The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.
Your merchants were the world’s important people.
By your magic spell all the nations were led astray.

23

І світло свічника́ вже не буде світити в тобі, і голос молодого й молодої вже не буде чутий в тобі. Бо купці твої були зе́мні вельможі, бо твоїм ворожби́тством були зведені всі наро́ди!

24

In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”

Бо в нім зна́йдена кров пророків, і святих, і побитих усіх на землі“.
