Abimelek son of Jerub-Baal went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan,

І пішов Авімелех, син Єруббаалів, до Сихему, до братів своєї матері, і говорив до них та до всьо́го роду ба́тьківського дому своєї матері, кажучи:
“Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.”
„Говорі́ть го́лосно до всіх сихемських госпо́дарів: Що́ ліпше для вас: чи панува́ння над вами семидесяти́ мужів, усіх Єруббаа́лових сині́в, чи панува́ння над вами му́жа одно́го? І пам'ятайте, що я кість ваша та тіло ваше“.
When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.”
І говорили брати його матері про нього го́лосно до сихемських госпо́дарів усі ті слова́, — і їхнє серце схилилося до Авімелеха, бо вони сказали: „Він наш брат“.
І дали́ йому сімдеся́т шеклів срібла з дому Баал-Беріта, а Авімелех найняв за них пустих та легкова́жних людей, — і вони пішли за ним.
He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.
А він прийшов до дому свого батька в Офру, і повбивав своїх братів, синів Єруббаа́лових, сімдеся́т чоловіка на однім камені. І позостався тільки Йотам, син Єруббаа́лів, наймолодший, бо сховався.
Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo gathered beside the great tree at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
І були́ зі́брані всі сихемські госпо́дарі та ввесь Бет-Мілло, і вони пішли та й настановили Авімелеха за царя при Елон-Муццаві, що в Сихемі.
When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
І повідомили про це Йотама, і він пішов, і став на верхі́в'ї гори Ґаріззі́м, і підвищив свій голос, і закликав та й сказав їм: „Почуйте мене, сихемські госпо́дарі, і хай почує вас Бог!
One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
Пішли були раз дерева́, щоб пома́зати царя над собою, і сказали вони до оли́вки: Царюй ти над нами!
“But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
А оли́вка сказала до них: Чи я загубила свій товщ, що Бога й людей ним шанують, і сторожити піду́ над дере́вами?
“Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
І сказали дере́ва до фіґи: Іди ти, та й над нами царю́й!
“But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
І сказала їм фіґа: Чи я загубила свої солодо́щі та свій добрий врожа́й, і сторожи́ти піду́ над дере́вами?
“Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
І дере́ва промовили до винограду: Іди ти, та й над нами царюй!
“But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
І промовив до них виноград: Чи я загубив свого со́ка, що Бога й людей весели́ти, і сторожи́ти піду́ над дере́вами?
“Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
Тоді всі дере́ва сказали терни́ні: Іди ти, та й над нами царюй!
“The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’
А терни́на сказала дере́вам: якщо справді мене на царя над собою пома́зуєте, — підійді́ть, похова́йтеся в ті́ні моїй! А як ні, — то ось вийде огонь із терни́ни, та кедри лива́нські поїсть!
“Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves?
А тепер, — якщо направду й у невинності зробили ви, що настанови́ли Авімелеха царем, і якщо ви добре зробили з Єруббаалом та з домом його, і якщо ви зробили йому за заслугою рук його,
Remember that my father fought for you and risked his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian.
бо мій ба́тько воював за вас, і кинув був життя своє на небезпе́ку, і врятував вас із руки Мідія́на,
But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you.
а ви сьогодні повстали на дім ба́тька мого, та й повбивали синів його, сімдеся́т люда, на одно́му камені, і настановили царем Авімелеха, сина його невільниці, над сихемськими госпо́дарями, бо він брат ваш,
So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today? If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too!
і якщо в правді й невинності зробили ви з Єруббаалом та з домом його цього дня, — то радійте Авімелехом, і нехай і він радіє вами!
But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
А як ні, — ви́йде огонь з Авімелеха, та й поїсть госпо́дарів Сихему й Бет-Мілло, і ви́йде огонь із госпо́дарів Сихему й з Бет-Мілло, та й з'їсть Авімелеха“.
Then Jotham fled, escaping to Beer, and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
І втік Йотам і збіг, і пішов до Бееру, і сидів там перед братом своїм.
God stirred up animosity between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek.
І послав Господь злого духа між Авімелехом та між сихемськими госпо́дарями, — і зрадили сихемські госпо́дарі Авімелеха,
God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons, the shedding of their blood, might be avenged on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.
щоб прийшла кривда семидесяти Єруббаалових синів, а їхня кров спала на Авімелеха, їхнього брата, що їх повбивав, та на сихемських господарів, що зміцнили його руки забити братів своїх.
In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
І сихемські господарі́ поставили на верхів'ях гір чатівників на нього, і вони грабува́ли все, що прихо́дило до них на дорозі. І сказано про це Авімелеху.
Now Gaal son of Ebed moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him.
І прийшов Ґаал, Еведів син, та брати його, і вони прийшли до Сихему, — і дові́рилися йому сихемські господарі́.
After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden them, they held a festival in the temple of their god. While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek.
І вихо́дили вони в поле, і збирали виноград свій, і вича́влювали, і робили празник. І входили вони до дому свого бога, і їли й пили та проклинали Авімелеха.
Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor, Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek?
І говорив Ґаал, син Еведів: „Хто Авімелех і хто Сихе́м, що бу́демо служити йому? Чи ж він не син Єруббаа́лів, а Зевул начальник його? Служіть людям Гемора, батька Сихема, а чому ми бу́демо служити йому?
А хто дав би цього народа в мою руку, то я прогнав би Авімелеха. І він скаже до Авімелеха: Помнож своє ві́йсько, та й вийди!“
When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry.
І почув Зевул, голова міста, слова Ґаала, сина Еведового, — і запалився його гнів.
Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.
І послав він послів до Авімелеха з хитрістю, говорячи: „Ось Ґаал, син Еведів, та брати його прихо́дять до Сихему, і ось вони підбу́рюють місто проти тебе.
Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait in the fields.
А тепер устань уночі ти та той наро́д, що з тобою, і чату́й на полі.
In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.”
І буде, — встанеш рано вранці, як схо́дитиме сонце, і нападеш на місто. І ось, — він та народ той, що з ним, ви́йдуть до тебе, а ти зробиш йому, як зна́йде потрібним рука твоя“.
So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies.
І встав уночі Авімелех та ввесь народ, що з ним, та й чатували над Сихемом чотири відділи.
Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.
І вийшов Ґаал, син Еведів, і став при вході місько́ї брами. І встав Авімелех та народ, що з ним, із за́сідки.
When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
А Ґаал побачив той народ, та й сказав до Зевула: „Ось народ схо́дить із верхі́в гір“. І сказав до нього Зевул: „Ти бачиш гірську́ тінь, немов людей!“
А Ґаал далі говорив та казав: „Ось народ сходить з верхі́в'я, а один відділ приходить із дороги Елон-Меоненіму“.
Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed? Go out and fight them!”
І сказав до нього Зевул: „Де тоді уста твої, що говорили: Хто Авімелех, що ми бу́дем служити йому? А оце той народ, що ти пого́рджував ним. Виходь же тепер, та й воюй з ним!“
І вийшов Ґаал перед сихемськими господаря́ми, та й воював з Авімелехом.
Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled.
І Авімелех погнав його, і він побі́г перед ним. І напа́дало багато трупів аж до входу до брами.
Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
І осівся Авімелех в Арумі, а Зевул вигнав Ґаал а та братів його, щоб не сиділи в Сихемі.
The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek.
I сталося другого дня, і вийшов наро́д на поле, а Авімелеху доне́сли про це.
So he took his men, divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them.
І взяв він людей, і поділив їх на три ві́дділи, та й чатував на полі. І побачив він, аж ось народ вихо́дить із міста, — і встав він на них, та й побив їх.
Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down.
А Авімелех та відділи, що з ним, напали й стали при вході місько́ї брами, а два відділи напали на все, що в полі, та й повбивали їх.
All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city and scattered salt over it.
І Авімелех воював із містом ці́лий той день, та й здобув місто, а народ, що був у ньому, позабивав. І зруйнував він те місто, та й обсіяв його сіллю.
On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple of El-Berith.
І почули про це всі, хто був у сихемській башті, і ввійшли до твердині, до дому бога Беріта.
When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there,
І було доне́сено Авімелехові, що зібралися всі господарі́ сихемської ба́шти.
he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon. He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!”
І вийшов Авімелех на го́ру Цалмон, він та ввесь народ, що з ним. І взяв Авімелех сокири в свою руку, та й настина́в галу́ззя з де́рева, і позно́сив його, і поклав на своє плече. І сказав він до народу, що з ним: „Що ви бачили, що́ зробив я, — поспішно зробіть, як я“.
So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
І настина́в також увесь народ кожен галу́ззя собі, і пішли за Авімелехом, і поскладали над печерою, та й підпалили над ними ту печеру огнем. І повмирали всі люди сихемської ве́жі, близько тисячі чоловіків та жінок.
Next Abimelek went to Thebez and besieged it and captured it.
І пішов Авімелех до Тевецу, і таборува́в при Тевеці, та й здобув його.
Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women — all the people of the city — had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof.
А в сере́дині міста була́ міцна́ башта, і повтікали туди всі чоловіки й жінки та всі господарі́ міста, і замкнули за собою, та й вийшли на дах тієї башти.
Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire,
І прийшов Авімелех аж до башти, та й воював із нею. І підійшов він аж до входу башти, щоб спалити її огнем.
a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.
Тоді одна жінка кинула горі́шнього ка́меня від жо́рен на Авімелехову голову, — та й розторо́щила йому че́репа.
Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So his servant ran him through, and he died.
І він зараз кликнув до юнака́, свого́ зброєно́ші, та й сказав йому: „Витягни свого меча, та й забий мене, щоб не сказали про мене: Його жінка забила!“ І його юна́к проколов його, — і він помер.
When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
І побачили ізра́їльтяни, що Авімелех помер, та й порозхо́дилися кожен на своє місце.
Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers.
І Бог віддав Авімелехові зло, яке він зробив був своєму батькові, що повбивав сімдеся́т братів своїх.
