Saul’s Growing Fear of David
After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.

І сталося, як скінчи́в він говорити до Саула, то Йоната́нова душа зв'яза́лася з душею Давидовою, — і полюбив його Йонатан, як душу свою.
From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family.
І того дня взяв його Сау́л, і не пустив його вернутися до дому його ба́тька.
And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
І склав Йоната́н із Давидом умову, бо полюбив його, як душу свою.
Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
І зняв Йоната́н із себе плаща́, що був на ньому, та й дав його Давидові, і вбрання́ своє, і все аж до меча свого, і аж до лу́ка свого, і аж до по́яса свого.
Whatever mission Saul sent him on, David was so successful that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the troops, and Saul’s officers as well.
І ходив Давид скрізь, куди посилав його Саул, і робив мудро. І настанови́в його Саул над вояка́ми, і він подо́бався усьому наро́дові, а також Сауловим рабам.
When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres.
І сталося, як вони йшли, коли Давид вертався, побивши филисти́млянина, то повихо́дили жінки́ зо всіх Ізраїлевих міст, — щоб співати та танцюва́ти назустріч царя Саула, із бу́бнами, із радістю, та з цимба́лами.
As they danced, they sang:
“Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands.”
“Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands.”
І викрикували ті жінки́, що грали, та й казали: „Саул повбива́в свої тисячі, а Давид — десятки тисяч свої!“
Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?”
І дуже запалився Саулів гнів, і та річ була неприє́мна йому, і він сказав: „Давидові дали́ десятки тисяч, а мені дали тисячі, — йому бракує ще тільки царюва́ння!“
And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.
І від того дня й далі Саул дивився за́здрісним оком на Давида.
І сталося другого дня, і напав злий дух від Бога на Саула, і він став несамови́тий в себе вдома, а Давид грав своєю рукою, як щоденно, а в Сауловій руці був спис.
and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.
І кинув Саул списа, кажучи про себе: „Уда́рю в Давида, і приб'ю його до стіни́! Та Давид два ра́зи ухили́вся від нього.
Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had departed from Saul.
І боявся Саул Давида, бо з ним був Госпо́дь, а від Саула Він відступи́в.
So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns.
І віддали́в його Саул від себе, і настанови́в його собі тисячником, і він вихо́див на війни, і верта́вся перед наро́дом.
In everything he did he had great success, because the Lord was with him.
І мав Давид пово́дження в усіх дорогах своїх, і з ним був Господь.
When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him.
І побачив Саул, що той має велике пово́дження, і налякався його.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns.
А ввесь Ізраїль та Юда любили Давида, бо він вихо́див на війни, і верта́вся перед ними.
Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the Lord.” For Saul said to himself, “I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!”
І сказав Саул до Давида: „Ось моя найстарша дочка́ Мерав, — її я дам тобі за жінку. Тільки будь мені хоробрим та воюй Господні ві́йни!“ А про себе Саул сказав: „Нехай не буде на ньому моя рука, — а нехай буде на ньому рука филисти́млян!“
But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?”
А Давид сказав до Саула: „Хто я, і яке життя моє та рід мого батька в Ізраїлі, що я стану зя́тем цареві?“
І сталося, коли настав час дати Давидові Мерав, Саулову дочку́, то вона була ви́дана за жінку мехолатитянинові Адріїлові,
Now Saul’s daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.
а Давида покохала Мелхо́ла,друга Саулова дочка́. І розповіли́ про це Саулові, і ця річ була слу́шна в оча́х його.
“I will give her to him,” he thought, “so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.”
І сказав Саул про себе: Дам я її йому, і нехай вона стане йому за па́стку, — і нехай буде на ньому рука филисти́млян!“ А до Давида Саул сказав удруге: „Посвоя́чишся сьогодні зо мною“.
Then Saul ordered his attendants: “Speak to David privately and say, ‘Look, the king likes you, and his attendants all love you; now become his son-in-law.’ ”
І наказав Саул своїм рабам: „Промовляйте до Давида поти́ху, говорячи: Ось цар уподо́бав тебе собі, а всі його раби полюбили тебе, а тепер ти посвоя́чишся з царем“.
They repeated these words to David. But David said, “Do you think it is a small matter to become the king’s son-in-law? I’m only a poor man and little known.”
І Саулові раби говорили ці слова до Давидових ушей. А Давид сказав: „Чи то легко в ваших оча́х посвоя́читися з царем? Таж я люди́на вбога та маловажна!“
When Saul’s servants told him what David had said,
І розповіли́ це раби Саула йому, говорячи: „Отак говорив Давид“.
Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’ ” Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.
І сказав Саул: „Так скажете Давидові: Не бажає цар заплати за молоду́, а бажає тільки сто крайніх плотів филистимських, щоб пімститися на не́приятелях царя“. А Саул ду́мав тим зробити, щоб Давид попав до руки филисти́млян.
When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed,
І його раби переказали ці слова Давидові, і ця річ була мила в Давидових очах, щоб посвоя́читися з царем. І в недовгому ча́сі
David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
встав Давид, та й пішов він та його люди, і забив серед филисти́млян двісті чоловіка. І Давид приніс їхні крайні плоті, і дав їх у повному числі цареві, щоб посвоя́читися з царем. І Саул дав йому за жінку дочку́ свою Мелхо́лу.
When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,
І побачив Саул, і пізнав, що Господь із Давидом, а Мелхо́ла, Саулова дочка́, полюбила його.
Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.
А Саул ще й далі боявся Давида. І Саул нена́видів Давида по всі дні.
The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul’s officers, and his name became well known.
І вихо́дили воювати филистимські провідники́, і бувало — скільки вони вихо́дили, то Давид мав найбільше пово́дження від усіх Саулових рабів. І стало ім'я́ його дуже шановане.
