Promises to Abram

Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.

1

І сказав Господь Аврамові: Вийди зі своєї землі й зі свого роду, і з дому свого батька — в землю, котру тобі покажу.

2

I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.

2

І зроблю тебе великим народом, і поблагословлю тебе, звеличу твоє ім’я, — і ти будеш благословенним.

3

I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Я поблагословлю тих, які благословляють тебе, а тих, які проклинають тебе, — прокляну; і благословенні будуть в тобі всі племена землі.

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

І пішов Аврам, як і звелів йому Господь, а з ним пішов Лот. Аврамові було сімдесят п’ять років, коли він вийшов із Харана.

Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the [a]people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.

Аврам взяв свою дружину Сару і Лота — сина свого брата, і все їхнє майно, котре надбали, і всяку душу, яку придбали в Харані, і вийшли, щоб іти до Ханаанської землі; і вони прибули в Ханаанську землю;

Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as [b]the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

і Аврам пройшовся тією землею по її довжині — аж до місця Сихем, до високого дуба. А жили тоді на [тій] землі ханаанці.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your [c]descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

І з’явився Господь Аврамові та сказав йому: Твоєму потомству дам цю землю. І збудував там Аврам жертовник Господеві, Який йому з’явився.

8

And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

А звідти він вирушив до гори на схід від Бетелю і поставив там свій намет: Бетель — на захід, а на схід — Анґе. І збудував там жертовник Господу, і прикликав Ім’я Господнє.

So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the [d]South.

І піднявся Аврам, і пішовши, отаборився в пустелі.

Abram in Egypt

Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.

Та на землі настав голод. Тож пішов Аврам до Єгипту, щоб там жити, бо на землі запанував голод.

And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance.

Сталося, коли наблизився Аврам, щоб увійти до Єгипту, то сказав Аврам своїй дружині Сарі: Я знаю, що ти жінка вродлива.

12

Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.

12

І станеться, коли побачать тебе єгиптяни, то скажуть: Вона його дружина; і вб’ють мене, а тебе залишать.

13

Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that [e]I may live because of you.”

Тому говори так: Я його сестра. Щоб мені було добре через тебе і щоб живою була моя душа через тебе.

So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful.

Сталося, коли ввійшов Аврам у Єгипет, то побачили єгиптяни його жінку, яка була дуже гарна.

The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house.

І побачили її вельможі фараона, і розхвалили її перед фараоном, і ввели її до фараонового дому.

He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

Тож через неї Аврамові поводилося добре; і були в нього вівці, телята й осли, раби та рабині, мули й верблюди.

17

But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

17

І покарав Бог фараона і його дім великими та тяжкими карами — через Сару, Аврамову дружину.

18

And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

Тож фараон, покликавши Аврама, сказав: Що ж це ти мені зробив? Чому не сказав мені, що вона — твоя дружина?

19

Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.”

19

Навіщо сказав ти: Вона — моя сестра? Тож я взяв її собі за дружину. І ось тепер твоя дружина перед тобою: забирай та йди геть!

20

So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

20

І наказав фараон мужам щодо Аврама, аби провели його, дружину його, усе, що було в нього, і Лота з ним.
