Jacob and Esau Meet

Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.

Поглянувши, Яків побачив: ось надходить його брат Ісав, а з ним чотириста чоловіків. Тож Яків поділив дітей між Лією, Рахилею та обома невільницями;

And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.

і поставив двох невільниць і їхніх синів спереду, далі — Лію та її дітей, а Рахиль і Йосифа — останніми.

Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Сам же пройшов і став перед ними. Перш ніж наблизився до свого брата, він сім разів вклонився до землі.

But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

А Ісав вибіг йому назустріч, обняв, поцілував його і впав йому на шию. Обидва вони заплакали.

And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, “Who are these with you?”
So he said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

Поглянувши, Ісав побачив жінок і дітей, та й сказав: Хто вони тобі? Той же відповів: Діти, якими Бог виявив милість твоєму рабові.

Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down.

І підійшли невільниці та їхні діти, і вклонилися.

And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

Наблизилася Лія та її діти — також вклонилися, а після цього підійшла Рахиль з Йосифом, і вклонилися.

Then Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?”
And he said, “These are to find favor in the sight of my lord.”

А що означають усі ці табори, які я зустрів? — запитав Ісав. Він же відповів: Щоб раб твій знайшов у тебе ласку, пане.

But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”

Та Ісав сказав: Брате, я маю багато; нехай твоє залишається твоїм!

10

And Jacob said, “No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

А Яків промовив: Якщо я знайшов у тебе ласку, то прийми дарунки з моїх рук. Бо ж я побачив твоє обличчя, наче хтось бачить Боже обличчя, — і ти ласкаво прийняв мене.

11

Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have [a]enough.” So he urged him, and he took it.

Прийми моє благословення, яке я тобі приніс, бо мені Бог виявив милосердя, і в мене є все. Він змушував його, — і той взяв,

Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you.”

і сказав: Рушаймо, підемо навпростець.

But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die.

13

Та Яків йому сказав: Пан мій знає, що діти малі, а вівці й корови в мене теляться. Тому, якщо гнатиму їх і один день, то загине вся худоба.

14

Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, [b]are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir.”

Тож нехай мій пан іде попереду слуги, а я буду підкріплятися в дорозі, залежно від складності подорожі, яка переді мною, відповідно до ходи дітей, доки не дійду до мого пана в Сиїр.

15

And Esau said, “Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.”
But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

Ісав же сказав: Залишу з тобою декого з тих людей, які зі мною. Навіщо це? — відповів той. Досить того, що я знайшов у тебе ласку, пане.

So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

І повернувся Ісав того дня своєю дорогою до Сиїра.

17

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made [c]booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called [d]Succoth.

А Яків подався до Наметів. Він поставив собі там житло і зробив загони для своєї худоби: Тому й назвав те місце — Намети.

18

Jacob Comes to Canaan

Then Jacob came [e]safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city.

І коли прийшов Яків до Салима, міста в Сікімах, що в Ханаанській землі, — а прийшов він із сирійської Месопотамії, — то отаборився перед містом.

19

And he bought the parcel of [f]land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.

За сто овечок в Емора, Сихемового батька, він купив частину поля і поставив там свій намет.

20

Then he erected an altar there and called it El[g] Elohe Israel.

Він встановив там жертовник і волав до Бога Ізраїля.
