New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons

Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, “Indeed your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
  • Jacob Blesses Manasseh and Ephraim

One day not long after this, word came to Joseph, “Your father is failing rapidly.” So Joseph went to visit his father, and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
  • And Jacob was told, “Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel [a]strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.
  • When Joseph arrived, Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to see you.” So Jacoba gathered his strength and sat up in his bed.
  • Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,
  • Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almightyb appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.
  • and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’
  • He said to me, ‘I will make you fruitful, and I will multiply your descendants. I will make you a multitude of nations. And I will give this land of Canaan to your descendantsc after you as an everlasting possession.’
  • And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.
  • “Now I am claiming as my own sons these two boys of yours, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born here in the land of Egypt before I arrived. They will be my sons, just as Reuben and Simeon are.
  • Your [b]offspring [c]whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
  • But any children born to you in the future will be your own, and they will inherit land within the territories of their brothers Ephraim and Manasseh.
  • But as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
  • “Long ago, as I was returning from Paddan-aram,d Rachel died in the land of Canaan. We were still on the way, some distance from Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). So with great sorrow I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath.”
  • Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”
  • Then Jacob looked over at the two boys. “Are these your sons?” he asked.
  • Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.
And he said, “Please bring them to me, and I will bless them.”
  • “Yes,” Joseph told him, “these are the sons God has given me here in Egypt.”
And Jacob said, “Bring them closer to me, so I can bless them.”
  • Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
  • Jacob was half blind because of his age and could hardly see. So Joseph brought the boys close to him, and Jacob kissed and embraced them.
  • And Israel said to Joseph, “I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!”
  • Then Jacob said to Joseph, “I never thought I would see your face again, but now God has let me see your children, too!”
  • So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.
  • Joseph moved the boys, who were at their grandfather’s knees, and he bowed with his face to the ground.
  • And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him.
  • Then he positioned the boys in front of Jacob. With his right hand he directed Ephraim toward Jacob’s left hand, and with his left hand he put Manasseh at Jacob’s right hand.
  • Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn.
  • But Jacob crossed his arms as he reached out to lay his hands on the boys’ heads. He put his right hand on the head of Ephraim, though he was the younger boy, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, though he was the firstborn.
  • And he blessed Joseph, and said:
“God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
  • Then he blessed Joseph and said,
“May the God before whom my grandfather Abraham
and my father, Isaac, walked —
the God who has been my shepherd
all my life, to this very day,
  • The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
    Bless the lads;
Let my name be named upon them,
    And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
  • the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm —
    may he bless these boys.
    May they preserve my name
and the names of Abraham and Isaac.
And may their descendants multiply greatly
    throughout the earth.”
  • Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
  • But Joseph was upset when he saw that his father placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head. So Joseph lifted it to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
  • And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”
  • “No, my father,” he said. “This one is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.”
  • But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”
  • But his father refused. “I know, my son; I know,” he replied. “Manasseh will also become a great people, but his younger brother will become even greater. And his descendants will become a multitude of nations.”
  • So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
  • So Jacob blessed the boys that day with this blessing: “The people of Israel will use your names when they give a blessing. They will say, ‘May God make you as prosperous as Ephraim and Manasseh.’” In this way, Jacob put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
  • Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
  • Then Jacob said to Joseph, “Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will take you back to Canaan, the land of your ancestors.
  • Moreover I have given to you one [d]portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
  • And beyond what I have given your brothers, I am giving you an extra portion of the lande that I took from the Amorites with my sword and bow.”
