Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

1

І покликав Яків усіх синів своїх та й промовив: Зберіться, а я сповіщу́ вам, що́ вас спіткає напри́кінці днів.

2

“Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
And listen to Israel your father.

2

Зійдіться та слухайте ви, сини Якова, і прислу́хайтеся до Ізраїля, вашого батька!

3

“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.

3

Руви́ме, — ти мій перворідний, моя міць і поча́ток ти сили моєї, верх вели́чности й верх ти могутности!

4

Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it —
He went up to my couch.

4

Ти пі́нився був, як вода, — та не втримаєшся, бо ти увійшов був на ложе свойого отця, і збезчестив його, на постелю мою ти піднявся!

5

“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Instruments of [a]cruelty are in their dwelling place.

Симео́н і Леві́й — то брати́, їхня зброя — знаря́ддя насильства.

6

Let not my soul enter their council;
Let not my honor be united to their assembly;
For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they [b]hamstrung an ox.

Хай до їхньої змови не входить душа моя, і нехай не прилу́читься слава моя до їх зборів, бо вони в своїм гніві люди́ну забили, а в своїй самоволі вола копи́т позбавили...

7

Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.

Прокля́тий гнів їхній, бо сильний, та їхня лютість, тяжка́ бо вона! Поділю́ їх я в Якові, і їх розпоро́шу в Ізраїлі!

8

“Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
Your father’s children shall bow down before you.

О Юдо, — похва́лять тебе твої браття! Рука твоя — на шиї твоїх ворогів, сини батька твого тобі вкло́няться.

9

Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He [c]bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?

Юда — лев молодий! Ти, мій сину, вертаєшся з здо́бичі: прихиливсь він, поклався як лев й як левиця, — зведе хто його?

10

The [d]scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes;
And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

Не віді́йметься бе́рло від Юди, ані в його сте́гон законодавець, аж прийде Примири́тель, що Йому буде по́слух наро́дів.

11

Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.

Він прив'язує до винограду свого молодого осла, а до вибраної виноградини — сина ослиці своєї. Він одежу свою буде прати в вині, а шату свою — в виноградній крові́!

12

His eyes are darker than wine,
And his teeth whiter than milk.

12

Від вина він зробивсь мутноокий, а від молока — білозубий.

13

“Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea;
He shall become a haven for ships,
And his border shall adjoin Sidon.

13

Завуло́н буде мешкать над берегом мо́рським, над берегом тим, де стають кораблі, а границя його — до Сидону.

14

“Issachar is a strong donkey,
Lying down between two burdens;

14

Іссаха́р — то костистий осел, що лежить між кошарами.

15

He saw that rest was good,
And that the land was pleasant;
He bowed his shoulder to bear a burden,
And became a band of slaves.

15

І побачив він спо́кій, що добрий, та землю, що стала приємна, і він нахилив свої плечі, щоб не́сти, і став працювать на податок.

16

“Dan shall judge his people
As one of the tribes of Israel.

16

Дан буде судить свій наро́д, як один із Ізра́їльських родів.

17

Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
A viper by the path,
That bites the horse’s heels
So that its rider shall fall backward.

17

Дан буде вуже́м при дорозі, змією отру́йливою при шляху́, що п'я́ти коневі кусає, і його верхіве́ць позад себе впаде.

18

I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!

18

Спасіння від Тебе чекаю, о Господи!

19

“Gad,[e] a troop shall [f]tramp upon him,
But he shall triumph at last.

19

Ґад — на нього юрба нападатиме, та він нападе на їх п'я́ти.

20

“Bread from Asher shall be rich,
And he shall yield royal dainties.

20

Аси́р — його хліб буде ситий, і він буде давати присма́ки царські.

21

“Naphtali is a deer let loose;
He uses beautiful words.

21

Нефтали́м — вільна ланя, він прекрасні слова́ видає.

22

“Joseph is a fruitful bough,
A fruitful bough by a well;
His branches run over the wall.

22

Йо́сип — вітка родюча, вітка родючая над джерело́м, її віття по муру спина́ється.

23

The archers have bitterly grieved him,
Shot at him and hated him.

23

І огірчи́ли його та з луку стріляли, і знена́виділи були стрі́льці його.

24

But his bow remained in strength,
And the arms of his hands were [g]made strong
By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob
(From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),

24

Та зостався міцним його лук, і стали пружні́ рамена́ його рук, — від рук Сильного Якового, звідти Па́стир, Тверди́ня синів Ізраїлевих.

25

By the God of your father who will help you,
And by the Almighty who will bless you
With blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

25

Проси ти від Бога, свойого Отця, — і Він допоможе тобі, і проси Всемогутнього — і Він благосло́вить тебе благослове́нням небе́с, що на висоті, благослове́нням безодні, що долі лежить, благослове́ннями перс та утро́би.

The blessings of your father
Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors,
Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
They shall be on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

26

Благослове́ння батька твого стали сильніші від благослове́ння батьків моїх, — аж до пожада́них висот віковічних. Нехай вони бу́дуть на голову Йо́сипову, на ма́ківку вибраного з-поміж братів своїх!

27

“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
In the morning he shall devour the prey,
And at night he shall divide the spoil.”

27

Веніями́н — хижий вовк: вранці їсть він лови́тву, а на вечір розділює здо́бич“.

28

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

28

Оце всі дванадцять племен Ізраїлевих, і те, що́ говорив їм батько їх. І він поблагословив їх, — кожного за благослове́нням його поблагословив їх.

Jacob’s Death and Burial

Then he charged them and said to them: “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

І він наказав їм, і промовив до них: „Я прилучаюся до своєї рідні... Поховайте мене при батьках моїх у печері, що на полі Ефрона хіттеянина,

30

in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place.

у тій печері, що на полі Махпели, що навпроти Мамре́ в ханаанській землі, яке поле купив був Авраам від Ефрона хіттеянина на володіння для гробу.

31

There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.

31

Там поховано Авраама й жінку його Сарру, там поховали Ісака та його жінку Ревеку, і там поховав я Лію.

32

The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth.”

32

Поле й печера, що на нім, то добуток від синів Хета“.

33

And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

33

І закінчив Яків заповіта синам своїм, і втягнув свої ноги до ліжка, та й спочи́в. І він прилучився до своєї рідні.
