Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

1

І покликав Яків синів своїх, та й промовив: Зберіться, щоб я звістив вам, що станеться з вами в останні дні.

2

“Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
And listen to Israel your father.

2

Зійдіться і послухайте, сини Якова, послухайте вашого батька Ізраїля.

3

“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.

3

Рувиме, ти — мій первенець, моя сила і перший з моїх дітей, — жорстокий та нестерпний, жорстокий та самовпевнений!

4

Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it —
He went up to my couch.

Закипів ти, як вода, — гляди, щоб не вибухнув. Бо ти ввійшов на ложе свого батька; тоді заплямував ти постіль, на яку ввійшов.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Instruments of [a]cruelty are in their dwelling place.

Симеон і Левій — брати; вони з власної волі здійснили злочин.

6

Let not my soul enter their council;
Let not my honor be united to their assembly;
For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they [b]hamstrung an ox.

Хай не приєднається моя душа до їхньої ради, і до їхньої змови хай не пристане моє нутро, бо у своїм гніві вбили людей і у своєму свавіллі порізали сухожилля бику.

7

Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.

Проклятий їхній гнів, бо безжалісний, і їхня лють — бо жорстока; поділю їх у Якові й розсію їх у Ізраїлі.

“Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
Your father’s children shall bow down before you.

8

Юдо, тебе похвалили твої брати; твої руки — на раменах твоїх ворогів. Тобі поклоняться сини твого батька.

9

Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He [c]bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?

Юдо, лев молодий, сину мій, ти вийшов із хащі, ліг і заснув: наче лев та подібно до левеняти; хто його розбудить?

10

The [d]scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes;
And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

Не переведеться князь у Юди й володар з його лона, доки не прийде призначене для нього, Він же — очікування народів.

11

Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.

Він прив’язує до виноградної лози свого осла, — своє осля — до лози. Він випере одяг свій у вині, свої шати — в крові виноградної лози.

12

His eyes are darker than wine,
And his teeth whiter than milk.

12

Іскряться його очі від вина, а зуби його біліші за молоко.

13

“Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea;
He shall become a haven for ships,
And his border shall adjoin Sidon.

13

При узбережжі оселиться Завулон, — біля причалу кораблів, і простягнеться аж до Сидона.

14

“Issachar is a strong donkey,
Lying down between two burdens;

Іссахар добро задумав, коли осів серед спадку;

15

He saw that rest was good,
And that the land was pleasant;
He bowed his shoulder to bear a burden,
And became a band of slaves.

15

він побачив, що відпочинок добрий і земля багата, тож руки свої приклав до роботи і став чоловіком-землеробом.

16

“Dan shall judge his people
As one of the tribes of Israel.

16

Дан судитиме свій народ, як одне з племен Ізраїля.

17

Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
A viper by the path,
That bites the horse’s heels
So that its rider shall fall backward.

17

Нехай Дан буде змією при дорозі, яка причаїлася на стежці, яка жалить коня в п’яту, а вершник падає назад.

18

I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!

18

Я чекаю на Господнє спасіння.

19

“Gad,[e] a troop shall [f]tramp upon him,
But he shall triumph at last.

19

Ґад — ватага розбійників пограбує його, та він ограбить їх, наступаючи їм на п’яти.

20

“Bread from Asher shall be rich,
And he shall yield royal dainties.

20

Асир — багатий його хліб, він постачатиме ласощі володарям.

21

“Naphtali is a deer let loose;
He uses beautiful words.

21

Нефталим — розквітла гілка, що приносить гарні плоди.

22

“Joseph is a fruitful bough,
A fruitful bough by a well;
His branches run over the wall.

22

Йосиф — син, який зростає; син, якому заздрять, що став славним; мій син наймолодший — повернувся до мене.

23

The archers have bitterly grieved him,
Shot at him and hated him.

23

Змовники — обмовляли його, і противилися йому начальники стрільців;

24

But his bow remained in strength,
And the arms of his hands were [g]made strong
By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob
(From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),

та силою знищив їхні луки, і ослабли сухожилля в’язів їхніх рук від руки Сильного Бога Якова, — через те, що зміцнив Ізраїля, —

25

By the God of your father who will help you,
And by the Almighty who will bless you
With blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

від Бога твого батька, і допоміг тобі мій Бог, і поблагословив тебе небесним благословенням згори і благословенням землі, що має все. Через благословення грудей і лона, —

26

The blessings of your father
Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors,
Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
They shall be on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

благословення твого батька і твоєї матері, — зміцнів у благословенні вічних гір і благословенням вічних вершин. Вони спочиватимуть на голові Йосифа, і на голові братів, яких він попровадив.

27

“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
In the morning he shall devour the prey,
And at night he shall divide the spoil.”

Веніамин — хижий вовк: вранці ще їсть, а ввечері ховає їжу.

28

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

28

Оце всі дванадцять синів Якова, і сказав їм це їхній батько. Він поблагословив їх — кожного з них поблагословив окремим благословенням.

Jacob’s Death and Burial

Then he charged them and said to them: “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

І сказав їм: Я приєднуюся до мого народу; поховайте мене з моїми батьками в печері, яка на полі Ефрона-хета, —

30

in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place.

в подвійній печері, що напроти Мамврії, у Ханаанській землі, у печері, котру купив Авраам у Ефрона-хета для власної гробниці.

31

There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.

Там поховали Авраама і його дружину Сарру, там поховали й Ісаака та його дружину Ревеку, там поховали Лію, —

32

The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth.”

32

в полі, купленому в хетових синів, — у печері, що на ньому.

33

And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

33

Давши заповіт своїм синам, Яків замовк, простягнув ноги на ліжку і помер. Він приєднався до свого народу.
