Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

І сталося третього дня, аж ось прийшов чоловік із табо́ру від Саула, — а одежа його роздерта, і по́рох на його голові. І сталося, як прийшов він до Давида, то впав на зе́млю й поклони́вся.
And David said to him, “Where have you come from?”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
І сказав йому Давид: „Звідки це ти прихо́диш?“ А той відказав: „Я втік з Ізра́їлевого табо́ру“.
Then David said to him, “How did the matter go? Please tell me.”
And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

І сказав до нього Давид: „Що́ це сталося, — розкажи́ но мені!“ А той відказав: Наро́д утік із бо́ю, а також багато з народу попа́дало й повмирало, і теж Саул та син його Йоната́н померли“.
So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”
А Давид сказав юнако́ві, що розповідав йому: „Як ти пізна́в, що помер Саул та син його Йоната́н?“
Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.
І сказав той юна́к, що розповідав йому: Припа́дком натрапив я на горі Ґілбоа, — аж ось Саул, настро́млений на списа свого, а колесни́ці та їздці доганяють його́.
Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’
І він оберну́вся до мене, і побачив мене, та й покликав мене. А я відповів: Ось я!
And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
І сказав він до ме́не: Хто ти? А я відказав йому́: Я амалики́тянин.
І сказав він до мене: Стань надо мною, та й убий мене, бо схопи́в мене корч, а вся душа ще в мені!
So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
І став я при ньому, та й убив його, бо я знав, що він не бу́де живи́й по упадку свої́м. І взяв я вінця́, що на голові його, та напле́чника, що на плечі його, і приніс сюди до пана свого́“.
Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.
І схопи́вся Давид за одежі свої, та й розде́р їх, і теж усі люди, що були з ним.
And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
І голоси́ли вони й плакали, та по́стили аж до ве́чора за Саулом та за сином його Йонатаном, і за наро́дом Господнім та за Ізраїлевим домом, що попа́дали від меча́.
Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
І сказав Давид юнако́ві, що розповідав йому: „Звідки ти?“ А той відказав: „Я син одного прихо́дька, амалики́тянина“.
So David said to him, “How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”
І сказав йому Давид: „Як ти не побоя́вся простягти́ руку свою, щоб убити Господнього пома́занця?“
Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died.
І покликав Давид одно́го з слуг своїх і сказав: „Підійди, — убий його́!“ І той уда́рив його, і він помер.
So David said to him, “Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”
І сказав до нього Давид: „Кров твоя на голові твоїй, бо уста твої посві́дчили проти тебе, гово́рячи: Я вбив Господнього пома́занця“.
The Song of the Bow
Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,

І Давид заголоси́в за Саулом та за його сином Йоната́ном такою жало́бною піснею,
та й сказав навчи́ти Юдиних синів пісні про лу́ка. Ось вона напи́сана в книзі Праведного:
“The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
How the mighty have fallen!
„О пишно́то Ізраїлева, побита із лука на згі́р'ях своїх, ой попа́дали ли́царі!
Tell it not in Gath,
Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon —
Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Не розказуйте в Ґа́ті про це, не сповіща́йте на ву́лицях Ашкало́ну, щоб не ті́шилися филисти́млянські до́чки, щоб не раді́ли до́чки необрізаних!
Ґілбоа́вські гори, — щоб на вас не було́ ні роси, ні дощу́, ані по́ля для жертви прине́сення! Бо спля́млений там щит хоробрих, щит Саулів, як ніби оливою він не пома́заний!

From the fat of the mighty,
The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
And the sword of Saul did not return empty.

Від крови забитих, від ло́ю хоробрих не відрива́вся був лук Йонатанів, і не верта́вся меч Саулів напо́рожньо!
“Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives,
And in their death they were not divided;
They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions.
And in their death they were not divided;

Саул та Йоната́н, ці улю́блені й милі за свойо́го життя, — і в смерті своїй нерозлу́чні, прудкі́ші були́ від орлі́в та сильніші від ле́вів!
“O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury;
Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

До́чки Ізра́їлеві, — за Саулом запла́чте, що вас зодягав у багряни́цю з прикра́сами, що оздо́блював золотом вашу оде́жу!
“How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan was slain in your high places.

Ой, попа́дали ли́царі посеред бо́ю! Йоната́н на пагі́рках твоїх ось забитий!
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been very pleasant to me;
Your love to me was wonderful,
Surpassing the love of women.

Скорблю по тобі, Йоната́не, мій брате! Ти для мене був ве́льми улю́блений, — коха́ння твоє розкішні́ше для мене було від коха́ння жіно́чого!
