David Avenges the Gibeonites

Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, “It is because of Saul and his [a]bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.”

За Давидового царювання був в землї голод через три годи, рік за роком. І питав Давид Господа. І відказав Господь: Се через Саула та його дом кровожадний, бо він вигубив Габаонїїв.

So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; the children of Israel had sworn protection to them, but Saul had sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.

Тодї прикликав царь Габаонїїв і говорив з ними. Габаонїї же не були з синів Ізрайлевих, а були останком з Аморїїв; а Ізрайлитяне були їм заклялись*; та Саул хотїв повигублювати їх, нїби з ревности про Ізрайлитян та Юдеїв.

Therefore David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?”

От і питає Давид Габаонїїв: Що б менї вчинити вам і чим приєднати б вас, щоб ви благословили наслїддє Господнє?

And the Gibeonites said to him, “We will have no silver or gold from Saul or from his house, nor shall you kill any man in Israel for us.”
So he said, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”

І відказали Габаонїї: Не вимагаємо від Саула й дому його нї срібла, нї золота, та й не хочемо, щоб кого в Ізраїлї страчено. А він сказав їм: Чого ж ви допевняєтесь, щоб я вам учинив?

Then they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the territories of Israel,

І кажуть вони цареві: Того чоловіка, що вичеркував нас, хочемо так вигубити, щоб не було з роду його нїкого по всему займищу Ізрайлевому;

let seven men of his descendants be delivered to us, and we will hang them before the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, whom the Lord chose.”
And the king said, “I will give them.”

З його потомків нехай видадуть нам сїм чоловіка, щоб ми повішали їх перед Господом в Гиві Саула, вибраного Господом. І відказав царь: Видам їх.

But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the Lord’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

Пощадив однак же царь Мемфівостея, сина Йонатанового Сауленкового, задля побратимства, що вони заприсягли перед Господом, Давид і Йонатан, син Саулів.

So the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, and the five sons of [b]Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she [c]brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite;

За те взяв царь обох синів Рицпиних, дочки Айєвої, що вона вродила Саулові, Армона й Мемфівостея, й пятьох синів від Саулової дочки Мероби, що їх породила Адріелеві Берзеллїєнкові, з Мехоли.

and he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill before the Lord. So they fell, all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

І віддав їх в руки Габаонїям, а вони повісили їх перед Господом на горі. І погибли всї семеро вкупі; а погибли вони у перві днї в жнива, коли розпочинались жнива ячмінні.

Now Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until the late rains poured on them from heaven. And she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night.

Рицпа ж, дочка Айєва, узяла шерстяну верету й розстелила на тій горі, й пильнувала тїл від почину жнив, аж докіль дощ із неба поливсь на їх, і не допускала, рушати їх птаству піднебесному в день, а польовому зьвірю в ночі.

And David was told what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

І донесено Давидові, що вдїяла Саулова наліжниця Рицпа, дочка Айєва.

Then David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the men of Jabesh Gilead who had stolen them from the street of [d]Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them up, after the Philistines had struck down Saul in Gilboa.

І пійшов Давид і забрав костї Саула й костї Йонатана від городян Явиських в Галаадї, що взяли їх були тайком з майдану в Бет-Санї, де їх повішали були Филистії тодї, як побили Саула на Гелбуї.

So he brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there; and they gathered the bones of those who had been hanged.

І перенїс він костї Саулові й костї сина його Йонатана звідти; тодї позбірали й костї повішених,

They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the tomb of Kish his father. So they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God heeded the prayer for the land.

Та й поховали костї Саулові й сина його Йонатана й костї повішених, у займищі Беняминовому, у Зелї, в отецькому Кисовому гробі. Так сповнено все, що приказав царь, і з того часу змилосердивсь Господь над землею.

Philistine Giants Destroyed

When the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint.

І загорілась ізнов війна між Филистіями й Ізраїлем. І Давид виступив на війну проти Филистіїв із військом своїм, і воювали з Филистіями, й Давид утомився.

16

Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of [e]the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David.

Тодї задумав Есвій, один із потомків Рефаїма, такий, що спис його важив триста секлів мідї, й підперезаний був новим мечем, убити Давида.

17

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”

Та врятував Давида Абесса Саруєнко та й положив Филистія мертвим. Тодї поклялись Давидові люде словами: Не виступиш ти з нами більш на війну, щоб не згасло сьвітло Ізрайлеве.

Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed [f]Saph, who was one of the sons of [g]the giant.

Потім була ще раз війна з Филистіями в Гобі. Тодї положив мерцем Хушатїй Собохай-Сафута, що також був з потомків велетенських.

Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of [h]Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

І довелось іще раз воювати Филистіїв під Гобом; того разу вбив Елханан, син Ягаре-Оргима, з Бетлеєма, Голїята з Гету, що в його ратовище було завтовшки з ткацький вал.

20

Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to [i]the giant.

А як дойшло раз до війни під Гетом, знайшовсь там один рослий чоловяга, що мав на руках і на ногах по шість пучок*, всїх двайцять і чотири. Сей походив також з велетенського роду.

21

So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of [j]Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

Як же почав він раз насьміхатись із Ізрайлитян, то його вбив Йонатан, син Давидового брата Сафая.

22

These four were born to [k]the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Всї чотири названі походили з велетенського роду в Гетї, та й полягли від руки Давидової й слуг його.
