Joab Kills Abner

Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

І була́ довга та війна́ між домом Сауловим та між домом Давидовим. А Давид усе змі́цнювався, а Саулів дім усе сла́бнув.

Sons of David

Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

І в Хевро́ні народи́лися Давидові сини, — і був його пе́рвісток Амно́н, від їзреелі́тки Ахіно́ам;

his second, [a]Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;

а другий син його — Кіл'а́в від Авіґа́їл, коли́шньої жінки кармеля́нина Навала; а третій Авесало́м, син Маахи, дочки Талмая, царя ґешурського;

the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner Joins Forces with David

Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.

And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

І мав Саул нало́жницю, а ім'я́ їй Ріцпа, дочка Айї. І сказав Іш-Бошет до Авнера: „Чого ти прийшов до нало́жниці батька мого?“

Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman?

І дуже запалився Авне́рові гнів на слова Іш-Бошетові, і він сказав: „Чи я псяча юдська голова́? Сьогодні я роблю́ ласку домові твого батька Саула, його брата́м та його при́ятелям, і не відда́в тебе в Дави́дову руку, а ти сього́дні згадав на мені гріх цієї жінки?

May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David as the Lord has sworn to him —

Нехай так зро́бить Бог Авне́рові, і нехай ще дода́сть йому, якщо я не зроблю́ Давидові так, як Господь присягну́в був йому,

to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”

щоб перене́сти ца́рство від Саулового дому, і щоб поставити Давидів трон над Ізраїлем та над Юдою від Дану й аж до Беер-Шеви“.

And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

І той не міг уже відповіда́ти Авнерові ані сло́ва, бо боявся його.

Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”

І послав Авне́р замість себе послів до Давида сказати: „Чия це земля?“ І ще сказати: „Склади́ ж свою умову зо мною, і ось рука моя буде з тобою, щоб приверну́ти до тебе всього Ізраїля“.

And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: you shall not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

А Давид відказав: „Добре, я складу́ з тобою умову! Тільки одніє речі я жада́ю від тебе, а саме: ти не побачиш обли́ччя мого, якщо ти не приведе́ш Мелхи́, Сау́лової дочки́, коли ти при́йдеш побачити мене“.

So David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

І послав Давид послів до Іш-Бо́шета, Саулового сина, говорячи: „Віддай жінку мою Мелху́, яку я заручи́в був собі за сотню крайніх плотів филисти́мських“.

And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish.

15

І послав Іш-Бошет, і взяв її від її чоловіка, від Палтіїла, сина Лаїша.

Then her husband went along with her to Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.

16

І пішов з нею чоловік її, і все плакав за нею аж до Бахуріму. І сказав до нього Авнер: „Іди, верни́ся!“ І той вернувся.

Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you.

А Авне́рове слово з Ізраїлевими старши́ми було таке: „Ви вже давно бажаєте мати Давида царем над собою.

18

Now then, do it! For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ”

А тепер зробіть це, бо Господь сказав був до Давида, говорячи: „Рукою Мого раба Давида Я спасу́ наро́д Мій, Ізраїля, від руки филисти́млян та від руки всіх ворогів його“.

And Abner also spoke in the hearing of Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.

І говорив Авне́р також до ушей Веніями́нових. І також пішов Авнер говорити до ушей Давидових у Хевро́ні, — усе, що добре в оча́х Ізраїля та в оча́х усього дому Веніяминового.

20

So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him.

І прийшов Авнер до Давида до Хевро́ну, а з ним двадцятеро люда. І Давид зробив прийняття́ Авне́рові та лю́дям, що з ним.

21

Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

І сказав Авнер до Давида: „Нехай я встану й піду́, і приведу́ до пана, царя мого, усього Ізраїля, а вони складу́ть із тобою умову, і ти будеш царюва́ти над усім, чого бу́де жадати душа твоя“. І відпустив Давид Авне́ра, і він пішов із ми́ром.

Joab Murders Abner

At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

Аж ось прийшли слу́ги Давидові та Йоав із похо́ду, і прине́сли з собою велику здо́бич. А Авнера не було з Давидом у Хевроні, бо він відпустив його, і той пішов із миром.

23

When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”

А Йоав та все військо, що було з ним, прийшли. І розповіли́ Йоаву, говорячи: „Прихо́див Авнер, син Нерів, до царя, а він відпустив його, — і той пішов із миром“.

24

Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone?

24

І прийшов Йоав до царя та й сказав: „Що́ ти зробив? Ось прихо́див до тебе Авнер, — на́що ти відпустив його, і він відійшов?

25

Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”

25

Ти знаєш Авнера, Нерового сина, — він прихо́див, щоб намовити тебе та щоб ви́відати твій вихід та вхід твій, і щоб ви́відати все, що́ ти робиш“.

26

And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it.

І вийшов Йоав від Давида, і послав посланці́в за Авнером, і вони заверну́ли його з Бор-Гассіри, а Давид про те не знав.

27

Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.

І вернувся Авнер до Хевро́ну, а Йоав відвів його в сере́дину брами, щоб поговорити з ним таємно, та й ударив його там у живіт, — і той помер за кров брата його Асаїла.

Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

А по́тім почув про це Давид і сказав: „Невинний я та ца́рство моє перед Го́сподом аж навіки в крові́ Авнера, Нерового сина.

29

Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

29

Нехай вона спаде́ на го́лову Йоава та на ввесь дім його батька! І нехай не перестає в Йоавовому домі течи́вий, і прокаже́ний, і той, хто опирається на кия, і хто падає від меча, і хто не має хліба!“

30

So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

А Йоав та брат його Авішай убили Авне́ра за те, що він забив їхнього брата Асаїла в Ґів'оні в бою́.

David’s Mourning for Abner

Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin.

І сказав Давид до Йоава та до всьо́го наро́ду, що був з ним: „Роздеріть вашу оде́жу, і опережіться вере́тищем, та й голосіть за Авнером!“ А цар Давид ішов за ма́рами.

32

So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

32

І похова́ли Авнера в Хевро́ні, а цар підніс свій голос та й плакав над Авне́ровим гробом, і плакав увесь наро́д.

33

And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a fool dies?

33

І заспівав цар жало́бну пісню над Авнером та й сказав: „Чи Авне́р мав загинути смертю негі́дного?

34

Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.

34

Твої ру́ки були не пов'я́зані, не забиті були́ твої но́ги в кайда́ни, — ти впав, як від непра́ведних па́дають!“ І ввесь народ ще більше плакав над ним.

35

And when all the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”

35

І прийшов увесь народ, щоб намо́вити Давида покріпи́тися хлібом ще того дня, та присягну́в Давид, говорячи: „Нехай так зробить мені Бог, і нехай ще додасть, якщо я перед за́ходом сонця скушту́ю хліба або чогобу́дь!“

36

Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people.

А ввесь наро́д дові́дався про це, і це було добре в їхніх оча́х, як і все, що́ робив цар, було добре в оча́х усього наро́ду.

37

For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner.

37

І того дня дові́далися ввесь народ та ввесь Ізра́їль, що то не було́ від царя, щоб забити Авнера, сина Нерового.

38

Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

38

І сказав цар своїм слу́гам: „Ото ж знайте, що вождь та великий муж упав цього дня!

39

And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too harsh for me. The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”

39

А я сьогодні слаби́й, хоч пома́заний цар, а ті люди, сини Церуї, сильніші від мене. Нехай відплатить Господь злочи́нцеві за його зло!“
