І набли́зилися Давидові дні до смерти, і він наказав своєму синові Соломонові, говорячи:
“I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man.
„Ось я йду дорогою всієї землі, а ти будеш міцни́й та станеш мужем.
And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;
І будеш ти стерегти́ нака́зи Господа, Бога свого, щоб ходити Його дорогами, щоб стерегти́ постанови Його, заповіді Його, та устави Його й сві́дчення Його, як писано в Мойсеєвім Зако́ні, щоб тобі щастило в усьому, що будеш робити, і скрізь, куди зве́рнешся,
that the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’
щоб ви́повнив Господь слово Своє, яке говорив мені, кажучи: Якщо сини твої будуть стерегти дороги свої, щоб ходити перед лицем Моїм у правді всім своїм серцем та всією душею своєю, то, сказав: Не буде переводу ніко́му від тебе на троні Ізраїлевім!
“Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed. And he shed the blood of war in peacetime, and put the blood of war on his belt that was around his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet.
А також ти знаєш, що́ зробив мені Йоа́в, син Церуїн, що́ зробив він двом провідника́м Ізраїлевих військ, — Авнерові, Неровому синові, та Амасі, синові Єтеровому. Він повбивав їх, і пролив воєнну кров у час миру, і попля́мив воєнною кров'ю свого пояса, що на сте́гнах його, та санда́лі свої, що на нога́х його.
Therefore do according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to the grave in peace.
І ти зро́биш за своєю мудрістю, і не даси зни́зитися сивині́ його мирно до шео́лу.
“But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom your brother.
А синам ґілеадянина Барзіллая зробиш ласку, і нехай вони будуть серед тих, що їдять за твоїм столом, бо вони отак прийшли до ме́не, коли я втікав перед Авесаломом, твоїм братом.
“And see, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a malicious curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’
А ось з тобою Шім'ї, Ґерин син, веніяминівець із Бахуріму. А він прокля́в був мене гострим прокля́ттям того дня, коли я йшов до Маханаїму. Та він прийшов до Йорда́ну стрі́нути мене, і я присягнув йому Господом, говорячи: Не заб'ю тебе мечем!
Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man and know what you ought to do to him; but bring his gray hair down to the grave with blood.”
А тепер не прощай йому́, бо ти муж мудрий, і знатимеш, що́ зробити йому, — і ти сивину́ його зведе́ш у крові до шео́лу“.
І спочив Давид з батьками своїми, і був похо́ваний у Давидовім Місті.
The period that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years.
А дні, що Давид царював над Ізраїлем, сорок літ: у Хевроні царював він сім літ, а в Єрусалимі царював тридцять і три роки.
Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.
І сів Соломон на троні Давида, батька свого, і його царюва́ння було дуже міцне́.
Solomon Executes Adonijah
Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, “Do you come peaceably?”
And he said, “Peaceably.”
Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, “Do you come peaceably?”
And he said, “Peaceably.”
І прийшов Адо́нія, син Гаґґітин, до Вірсавії, Соломонової матері, а вона сказала: „Чи при́хід твій — з миром?“ І він відказав: „З миром“.
Moreover he said, “I have something to say to you.”
And she said, “Say it.”
And she said, “Say it.”
І сказав: „Справа в мене до те́бе“. А вона відказала: „Говори!“
Then he said, “You know that the kingdom was mine, and all Israel had set their expectations on me, that I should reign. However, the kingdom has been turned over, and has become my brother’s; for it was his from the Lord.
І він сказав: „Ти знаєш, що моє було це царство, і на мене звернув увесь Ізраїль своє обличчя, щоб мені царювати. Та відійшло царство, і доста́лось моєму братові, бо від Господа це сталось йому.
А тепер одне бажа́ння жадаю я від тебе: Не відмовляй мені!“ А вона сказала йому: „Говори!“
Then he said, “Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you, that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite as wife.”
І він сказав: „Скажи цареві Соломонові, — бо він не відмовить тобі, — щоб він дав мені шунаммітку Авішаґ за жінку“.
So Bathsheba said, “Very well, I will speak for you to the king.”
І сказала Вірсавія: „Добре, — я скажу́ про тебе царе́ві“.
Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed down to her, and sat down on his throne and had a throne set for the king’s mother; so she sat at his right hand.
І прийшла Вірсавія до царя Соломона, щоб сказати йому про Адонія. А цар устав назустріч їй, і вклонився їй, та й сів на своєму троні. І поставив він трона й для царевої матері, і вона сіла по прави́ці його.
І сказала вона: „Одне мале жада́ння бажаю я від тебе, — не відмов мені“. І сказав їй цар: „Жадай, мати моя, бо я не відмо́влю тобі“.
So she said, “Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as wife.”
І сказала вона: „Нехай шунаммітка Авішаґ буде да́на братові твоєму Адонії за жінку“.
And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “Now why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also — for he is my older brother — for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.”
І відповів цар Соломон та й сказав своїй матері: „І на́що ти про́сиш шунаммітку Авішаґ для Адонії? Та попроси для нього й царства, бо він брат мій, ста́рший від мене, і для нього, і для священика Евіятара, і для Йоава, Церуїного сина“!
Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, “May God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life!
І присягнув цар Соломон Господом, говорячи: „Так нехай зробить мені Бог, і так нехай додасть, коли не на душу свою говорив Адонія це слово...
А тепер, — як живий Господь, що міцно поставив мене й посадовив мене на троні мого батька Давида, і що зробив мені дім, як говорив був, — сьогодні буде вбитий Адо́нія!“
So King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died.
І послав цар Соломон через Бенаю, Єгоядиного сина, — і він ура́зив його, і той помер...
Abiathar Exiled, Joab Executed
And to Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for [f]you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted.”
And to Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for [f]you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted.”
А священикові Евіятарові цар сказав: „Іди до Анатоту на поля́ свої, бо ти чоловік смерти, а цього дня не вб'ю тебе, бо носив ти ковчега Владики Господа перед обличчям батька мого Давида, і що терпів ти в усьому, в чому терпів мій батько“.
So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, that he might fulfill the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.
І вигнав Соломон Евіятара, щоб не був священиком для Господа, щоб ви́повнилося слово Господнє, яке говорив у Шіло́ на дім Іліїв.
Then news came to Joab, for Joab had defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. So Joab fled to the tabernacle of the Lord, and took hold of the horns of the altar.
А звістка про це прийшла аж до Йоава, бо Йоав схилявся до Адонії, а до Авесалома не схилявся. І втік Йоав до Господньої скинії, і схопи́вся за роги же́ртівника...
And King Solomon was told, “Joab has fled to the tabernacle of the Lord; there he is, by the altar.” Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, strike him down.”
І доне́сено цареві Соломонові, що Йоав утік до скинії Господньої, і ось він при жертівнику. І послав Соломон Бенаю, Єгоядиного сина, говорячи: „Іди, — урази́ його!“
So Benaiah went to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said to him, “Thus says the king, ‘Come out!’ ”
And he said, “No, but I will die here.” And Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, “Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.”
And he said, “No, but I will die here.” And Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, “Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.”
І ввійшов Беная до Господньої скинії, та й сказав до нього: „Так сказав цар: Вийди!“ А той відказав: „Ні, я тут помру!“ І передав Беная цареві це слово, говорячи: „Так сказав Йоав, і так відповів мені“.
Then the king said to him, “Do as he has said, and strike him down and bury him, that you may take away from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood which Joab shed.
І сказав йому цар: „Зроби, як я говорив, і врази́ його. І поховаєш його, і зді́ймеш невинну кров, що Йоав пролив був, з мене та з дому мого батька.
So the Lord will return his [g]blood on his head, because he struck down two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword — Abner the son of Ner, the commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, the commander of the army of Judah — though my father David did not know it.
І нехай оберне Господь його кров на його голову, що він ура́зив був двох мужів справедливих та ліпших від нього, і повбивав їх мече́м, а батько мій Давид того не знав: Авнера, Нериного сина, провідника́ Ізраїлевого війська, та Амасу, сина Єтеревого, провідника́ Юдиного війська.
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his descendants forever. But upon David and his descendants, upon his house and his throne, there shall be peace forever from the Lord.”
І нехай зве́рнеться їхня кров на голову Йоава та на голову насіння його навіки. А Давидові й насінню його та дому його й трону його нехай буде мир від Господа аж навіки“.
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and struck and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
І пішов Беная, Єгоядин син, і вра́зив його, та й убив його. І був він похо́ваний у своїм домі в пустині.
The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.
А цар, замість нього, настанови́в над ві́йськом Бенаю, Єгоядиного сина, а священика Садока цар настановив замість Евіятара.
Shimei Executed
Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there anywhere.
Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there anywhere.
І послав цар, і покликав Шім'ї та й сказав йому: „Збудуй собі дім в Єрусалимі, й осядеш там, і не ви́йдеш звідти ані сюди, ані туди.
І буде того дня, як ти ви́йдеш і пере́йдеш поток Кедро́н, то щоб ти добре знав, що конче помреш. Кров твоя буде на голові твоїй!“
And Shimei said to the king, “The saying is good. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do.” So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
І сказав Шім'ї до царя: „Добра це річ. Як наказав пан мій цар, так зробить раб твій'.“ І сидів Шім'ї в Єрусалимі багато днів.
Now it happened at the end of three years, that two slaves of Shimei ran away to Achish the son of Maachah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, “Look, your slaves are in Gath!”
І сталося в кінці трьох років, і втекли́ двоє рабів Шім'ї до Ахіша, Маахіного сина, ґатського царя. І доне́сли Шім'ї, говорячи: „Ось раби́ твої в Ґаті!“
So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Achish at Gath to seek his slaves. And Shimei went and brought his slaves from Gath.
І встав Шім'ї, й осідлав осла свого та й подався до Ахіша, щоб пошукати своїх рабів. І пішов Шім'ї, і привів своїх рабів з Ґату.
And Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had come back.
А Соломонові доне́сено, що Шім'ї пішов з Єрусалиму в Ґат і вернувся.
Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord, and warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and travel anywhere, you shall surely die’? And you said to me, ‘The word I have heard is good.’
І послав цар, і покликав Шім'ї та й сказав до нього: „Чи ж я не заприсяг тебе Господом, і не взяв свідка проти тебе, говорячи: Того дня, коли ти ви́йдеш і пі́деш туди чи сюди, щоб ти добре знав, що конче помреш? І ти сказав мені: Добра це річ, що я чув.
Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the commandment that I gave you?”
І чому́ ти не додержувався Господньої прися́ги та нака́за, що я наказав був тобі?“
The king said moreover to Shimei, “You know, as your heart acknowledges, all the wickedness that you did to my father David; therefore the Lord will return your wickedness on your own head.
І сказав цар до Шім'ї: „Ти знаєш усе те зло, і знало твоє серце, що зробив ти Давидові, батькові моєму. І поверне Господь твоє зло на твою голову.
But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.”
А цар Соломон — благословенний, а Давидів трон буде стояти міцно перед Господнім лицем аж навіки“.
