Tragic End of Saul and His Sons

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

А филисти́мляни воювали з Ізраїлем. І побігли Ізраїлеві мужі перед филисти́млянами, і па́дали тру́пами на горі Ґілбоа.

Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, [a]Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

І гналися филисти́мляни за Саулом та за його сина́ми. І повбивали филисти́мляни Йоната́на, і Авінадава, і Малкі-Шуя, Сау́лових синів.

The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was wounded by the archers.

І став бій тяжки́й для Саула, і лу́чники ки́нулися на нього, — і він злякався тих лу́чників.

Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.” But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it.

І сказав Саул до свого зброєно́ші: „Ви́тягни меча свого, і пробий мене ним, щоб не прийшли ці необрі́зані, і не знущалися на до мною!“ Та не хотів зброєно́ша, бо дуже боявся. Тоді взяв Сау́л меча́ — та й упав на нього.

And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.

І побачив зброєно́ша, що помер Сау́л, і впав і він на меча, та й помер...

So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

І помер Саул і троє синів його, та ввесь його дім поме́рли ра́зом.

And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; then the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

І побачили всі ізра́їльтяни, що мешкали в долині, що всі втікають, та що помер Саул та сини його, то поки́дали свої міста́ й повтікали, а филисти́мляни поприхо́дили, й осі́лися в них...

So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to [b]strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

І сталося другого дня, і прийшли филисти́мляни, щоб пообдира́ти тру́пи, — та й знайшли Саула та синів його, що лежали на горі Ґілбоа.

And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among the people.

І вони пообдира́ли його, і поне́сли го́лову його та збро́ю його, і послали в филистимські краї навко́ло, щоб сповістити в домах своїх божкі́в та наро́дові.

Then they put his armor in the [c]temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

І вони поклали збро́ю його в домі свого бога, а го́лову його прибили в домі Даґона.

And when all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

І почув увесь ґілеадський Явеш про все, що́ филисти́мляни зробили Саулові,

all the valiant men arose and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons; and they brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

і встали всі хоробрі, і поне́сли Саулове тіло та тіла́ синів його, і прине́сли до Явешу, та й похова́ли їхні ко́сті під дубом в Явеші, і по́стили сім день.

So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had [d]committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.

І помер Саул за своє беззако́ння, що він ним спроневі́рився проти Господа через Господнє слово, якого не тримався, а також через те, що питався віщого духа, щоб ви́відати,

But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

а не виві́дував від Господа. І Він убив його, а царство його передав Дави́дові, Єссе́євому синові.
