    The Gatekeepers

    Concerning the divisions of the gatekeepers: of the Korahites, [a]Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of [b]Asaph.

    Duties of the Gatekeepers

    These are the divisions of the gatekeepers:
    From the Korahites, there was Meshelemiah son of Kore, of the family of Abiasaph.a

    And the sons of Meshelemiah were Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

    The sons of Meshelemiah were Zechariah (the oldest), Jediael (the second), Zebadiah (the third), Jathniel (the fourth),

    Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.

    Elam (the fifth), Jehohanan (the sixth), and Eliehoenai (the seventh).

    Moreover the sons of Obed-Edom were Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth,

    The sons of Obed-edom, also gatekeepers, were Shemaiah (the oldest), Jehozabad (the second), Joah (the third), Sacar (the fourth), Nethanel (the fifth),

    Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth; for God blessed him.

    Ammiel (the sixth), Issachar (the seventh), and Peullethai (the eighth). God had richly blessed Obed-edom.

    Also to Shemaiah his son were sons born who governed their fathers’ houses, because they were men of great ability.

    Obed-edom’s son Shemaiah had sons with great ability who earned positions of great authority in the clan.

    The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, whose brothers Elihu and Semachiah were able men.

    Their names were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad. Their relatives, Elihu and Semakiah, were also very capable men.

    All these were of the sons of Obed-Edom, they and their sons and their brethren, able men with strength for the work: sixty-two of Obed-Edom.

    All of these descendants of Obed-edom, including their sons and grandsons — sixty-two of them in all — were very capable men, well qualified for their work.

    And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, eighteen able men.

    Meshelemiah’s eighteen sons and relatives were also very capable men.

    Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons: Shimri the first (for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him the first),

    Hosah, of the Merari clan, appointed Shimri as the leader among his sons, though he was not the oldest.

    Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth; all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.

    His other sons included Hilkiah (the second), Tebaliah (the third), and Zechariah (the fourth). Hosah’s sons and relatives, who served as gatekeepers, numbered thirteen in all.

    Among these were the divisions of the gatekeepers, among the chief men, having duties just like their brethren, to serve in the house of the Lord.

    These divisions of the gatekeepers were named for their family leaders, and like the other Levites, they served at the house of the LORD.

    And they cast lots for each gate, the small as well as the great, according to their father’s house.

    They were assigned by families for guard duty at the various gates, without regard to age or training, for it was all decided by means of sacred lots.

    The lot for the East Gate fell to [c]Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and his lot came out for the North Gate;

    The responsibility for the east gate went to Meshelemiahb and his group. The north gate was assigned to his son Zechariah, a man of unusual wisdom.

    to Obed-Edom the South Gate, and to his sons the [d]storehouse.

    The south gate went to Obed-edom, and his sons were put in charge of the storehouse.

    To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came out for the West Gate, with the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending highway — watchman opposite watchman.

    Shuppim and Hosah were assigned the west gate and the gateway leading up to the Temple.c Guard duties were divided evenly.

    On the east were six Levites, on the north four each day, on the south four each day, and for the [e]storehouse two by two.

    Six Levites were assigned each day to the east gate, four to the north gate, four to the south gate, and two pairs at the storehouse.

    As for the [f]Parbar on the west, there were four on the highway and two at the Parbar.

    Six were assigned each day to the west gate, four to the gateway leading up to the Temple, and two to the courtyard.d

    These were the divisions of the gatekeepers among the sons of Korah and among the sons of Merari.

    These were the divisions of the gatekeepers from the clans of Korah and Merari.

    The Treasuries and Other Duties

    Of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasuries of the house of God and over the treasuries of the dedicated[g] things.

    Treasurers and Other Officials

    Other Levites, led by Ahijah, were in charge of the treasuries of the house of God and the treasuries of the gifts dedicated to the LORD.

    The sons of [h]Laadan, the descendants of the Gershonites of Laadan, heads of their fathers’ houses, of Laadan the Gershonite: [i]Jehieli.

    From the family of Libnie in the clan of Gershon, Jehielf was the leader.

    The sons of Jehieli, Zetham and Joel his brother, were over the treasuries of the house of the Lord.

    The sons of Jehiel, Zetham and his brother Joel, were in charge of the treasuries of the house of the LORD.

    Of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites:

    These are the leaders that descended from Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel:

    Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was overseer of the treasuries.

    From the clan of Amram, Shebuel was a descendant of Gershom son of Moses. He was the chief officer of the treasuries.

    And his brethren by Eliezer were Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.

    His relatives through Eliezer were Rehabiah, Jeshaiah, Joram, Zicri, and Shelomoth.

    This Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasuries of the dedicated things which King David and the heads of fathers’ houses, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the army, had dedicated.

    Shelomoth and his relatives were in charge of the treasuries containing the gifts that King David, the family leaders, and the generals and captainsg and other officers of the army had dedicated to the LORD.

    Some of the [j]spoils won in battles they dedicated to maintain the house of the Lord.

    These men dedicated some of the plunder they had gained in battle to maintain the house of the LORD.

    And all that Samuel the seer, Saul the son of Kish, Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah had dedicated, every dedicated thing, was under the hand of Shelomith and his brethren.

    Shelomothh and his relatives also cared for the gifts dedicated to the LORD by Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah. All the other dedicated gifts were in their care, too.

    Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons performed duties as officials and judges over Israel outside Jerusalem.

    From the clan of Izhar came Kenaniah. He and his sons were given administrative responsibilitiesi over Israel as officials and judges.

    Of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, one thousand seven hundred able men, had the oversight of Israel on the west side of the Jordan for all the business of the Lord, and in the service of the king.

    From the clan of Hebron came Hashabiah. He and his relatives — 1,700 capable men — were put in charge of the Israelite lands west of the Jordan River. They were responsible for all matters related to the things of the LORD and the service of the king in that area.

    Among the Hebronites, Jerijah was head of the Hebronites according to his genealogy of the fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought, and there were found among them capable men at Jazer of Gilead.

    Also from the clan of Hebron came Jeriah,j who was the leader of the Hebronites according to the genealogical records. (In the fortieth year of David’s reign, a search was made in the records, and capable men from the clan of Hebron were found at Jazer in the land of Gilead.)

    And his brethren were two thousand seven hundred able men, heads of fathers’ houses, whom King David made officials over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God and the affairs of the king.

    There were 2,700 capable men among the relatives of Jeriah. King David sent them to the east side of the Jordan River and put them in charge of the tribes of Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. They were responsible for all matters related to God and to the king.
