Asa’s Treaty with Syria

In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and built Ramah, that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.

Тридцятого й шостого року царюва́ння Аси пішов Баша, Ізраїлів цар, проти Юди, і будував Раму, щоб не дати ніко́му від Аси, царя Юдиного, вихо́дити та вхо́дити.

Then Asa brought silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-Hadad king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying,

І виніс Аса срібло та золото із скарбни́ць Господнього дому та дому царе́вого, і послав до Бен-Гадада, царя сирійського, що сидів у Дамаску, говорячи:

“Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. See, I have sent you silver and gold; come, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

„Є умова між мною та між тобою, і між батьком моїм та батьком твоїм. Ось послав я тобі срібла та золота, — іди, зламай умову свою з Башею, царем Ізраїлевим, і нехай він віді́йде від мене“.

So Ben-Hadad heeded King Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel. They attacked Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim, and all the storage cities of Naphtali.

І послухався Бен-Гадад царя Аси, і послав зверхників свого ві́йська на Ізраїлеві міста, і вони поруйнува́ли Іййона, і Дана, і Авел-Маїма та всі запаси міст Нефтали́мових.

Now it happened, when Baasha heard it, that he stopped building Ramah and ceased his work.

І сталося, як Баша це почув, то перестав будувати Раму, і спинив свою працю.

Then King Asa took all Judah, and they carried away the stones and timber of Ramah, which Baasha had used for building; and with them he built Geba and Mizpah.

А цар Аса взяв усього Юду, і вони повино́сили каміння Рами та її дерево, що з них будував був Баша, і побудува́в з того Ґеву та Міцпу.

Hanani’s Message to Asa

And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: “Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand.

А того ча́су прийшов прозорли́вець Ханані до Аси, Юдиного царя, та й сказав до нього: „Через те, що ти спирався на сирійського царя, а не сперся на Господа, Бога свого, тому втекло з твоєї руки ві́йсько сирійського царя.

Were the Ethiopians and the Lubim not a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet, because you relied on the Lord, He delivered them into your hand.

Чи ж не були́ кушеяни та ливіяни ві́йськом дуже великим, колесни́цями й верхівця́ми дуже числе́нними? Та коли ти сперся на Господа, Він дав їх у твою руку.

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.”

Бо очі Господні дивляться по всій землі, щоб зміцни́ти тих, у кого все їхнє серце до Нього. Тому́ зробив ти нерозумно, бо відтепе́р будуть у тебе ві́йни!“

Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in prison, for he was enraged at him because of this. And Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.

І розгні́вався Аса на прозорли́вця, і дав його до в'язни́ці, бо був у гніві на нього за це. І Аса тиснув декого з наро́ду того ча́су.

Illness and Death of Asa

Note that the acts of Asa, first and last, are indeed written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

І оце Асині діла́, перші та останні, — ось вони описані в книзі Юдиних та Ізраїлевих царів.

And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.

І занеду́жав Аса тридцятого й дев'ятого року свого царюва́ння на свої но́ги, і хвороба його була́ тяжка́. Та й у хворобі своїй не звертався він до Господа, але до лікарі́в.

So Asa [a]rested with his fathers; he died in the forty-first year of his reign.

І спочив Аса з своїми батька́ми, і помер сорокового й першого року свого царюва́ння.

They buried him in his own tomb, which he had [b]made for himself in the City of David; and they laid him in the bed which was filled with spices and various ingredients prepared in a mixture of ointments. They made a very great burning for him.

І поховали його в його гробни́цях, які він ви́копав собі в Давидовому Місті. І поклали його на ложі, що він напо́внив па́хощами та різними, по-містецькому зро́бленими, мастя́ми. І спалили йому дуже велике палі́ння.
