  • Servants for the Temple

Now I gathered them by the river that flows to Ahava, and we camped there three days. And I looked among the people and the priests, and found none of the sons of Levi there.

  • Ezra’s Journey to Jerusalem

I assembled the exiles at the Ahava Canal, and we camped there for three days while I went over the lists of the people and the priests who had arrived. I found that not one Levite had volunteered to come along.
  • Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, leaders; also for Joiarib and Elnathan, men of understanding.
  • So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, who were leaders of the people. I also sent for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of discernment.
  • And I gave them a command for Iddo the chief man at the place Casiphia, and [e]I told them what they should say to [f]Iddo and his brethren the Nethinim at the place Casiphia — that they should bring us servants for the house of our God.
  • I sent them to Iddo, the leader of the Levites at Casiphia, to ask him and his relatives and the Temple servants to send us ministers for the Temple of God at Jerusalem.
  • Then, by the good hand of our God upon us, they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi, the son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, with his sons and brothers, eighteen men;
  • Since the gracious hand of our God was on us, they sent us a man named Sherebiah, along with eighteen of his sons and brothers. He was a very astute man and a descendant of Mahli, who was a descendant of Levi son of Israel.e
  • and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty men;
  • They also sent Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and twenty of his sons and brothers,
  • also of the Nethinim, whom David and the leaders had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinim. All of them were designated by name.
  • and 220 Temple servants. The Temple servants were assistants to the Levites — a group of Temple workers first instituted by King David and his officials. They were all listed by name.
  • Fasting and Prayer for Protection

Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions.
  • And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.
  • For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.”
  • For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemenf to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.”
  • So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.
  • So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.
  • Gifts for the Temple

And I separated twelve of the leaders of the priests — Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them —
  • I appointed twelve leaders of the priests — Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten other priests —
  • and weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the articles, the offering for the house of our God which the king and his counselors and his princes, and all Israel who were present, had offered.
  • to be in charge of transporting the silver, the gold, the gold bowls, and the other items that the king, his council, his officials, and all the people of Israel had presented for the Temple of God.
  • I weighed into their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, silver articles weighing one hundred talents, one hundred talents of gold,
  • I weighed the treasure as I gave it to them and found the totals to be as follows:
    24 tonsg of silver,
    7,500 poundsh of silver articles,
    7,500 pounds of gold,
  • twenty gold basins worth a thousand drachmas, and two vessels of fine polished bronze, precious as gold.
  • 20 gold bowls, equal in value to 1,000 gold coins,i
2 fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
  • And I said to them, “You are holy[g] to the Lord; the articles are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering to the Lord God of your fathers.
  • And I said to these priests, “You and these treasures have been set apart as holy to the LORD. This silver and gold is a voluntary offering to the LORD, the God of our ancestors.
  • Watch and keep them until you weigh them before the leaders of the priests and the Levites and heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.”
  • Guard these treasures well until you present them to the leading priests, the Levites, and the leaders of Israel, who will weigh them at the storerooms of the LORD’s Temple in Jerusalem.”
  • So the priests and the Levites received the silver and the gold and the articles by weight, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.
  • So the priests and the Levites accepted the task of transporting these treasures of silver and gold to the Temple of our God in Jerusalem.
  • The Return to Jerusalem

Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. And the hand of our God was upon us, and He delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambush along the road.
  • We broke camp at the Ahava Canal on April 19j and started off to Jerusalem. And the gracious hand of our God protected us and saved us from enemies and bandits along the way.
  • So we came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days.
  • So we arrived safely in Jerusalem, where we rested for three days.
  • Now on the fourth day the silver and the gold and the articles were weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; with them were the Levites, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui,
  • On the fourth day after our arrival, the silver, gold, and other valuables were weighed at the Temple of our God and entrusted to Meremoth son of Uriah the priest and to Eleazar son of Phinehas, along with Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui — both of whom were Levites.
  • with the number and weight of everything. All the weight was written down at that time.
  • Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the total weight was officially recorded.
  • The children of those who had been carried away captive, who had come from the captivity, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats as a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord.
  • Then the exiles who had come out of captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel. They presented twelve bulls for all the people of Israel, as well as ninety-six rams and seventy-seven male lambs. They also offered twelve male goats as a sin offering. All this was given as a burnt offering to the LORD.
  • And they delivered the king’s orders to the king’s satraps and the governors in the region beyond [h]the River. So they gave support to the people and the [i]house of God.
  • The king’s decrees were delivered to his highest officers and the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River,k who then cooperated by supporting the people and the Temple of God.
