Job and His Family in Uz

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and [a]shunned evil.

1

Був (давно) чоловік у землї Уз, на імя Йов. Був се чоловік щирий, справедливий й богобоязливий, що цуравсь усього лихого.

2

And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

І родилось йому семеро синів й три дочки,

Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the [b]people of the East.

А статку було в його сїм тисяч овець, три тисячі верблюдів, пятьсот ярем волів, пятьсот ослиць і багацько челяди, так що переважував сей чоловік усїх осадників на востоцї.

And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Сини ж його звикли були сходитись і в дому кожного по черзї гоститись. Кликали вони й трьох сестер своїх, їсти й пити з ними.

So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and [c]sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed[d] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.

Як же сї гостини обходили свій круг, наказував їм Йов очищуватись; і вставав на другий день рано вранцї й приносив про кожного з них всепаленнє. Бо думав Йов так: Може, дїти мої согрішили та позневажили Бога в серцї свойму. Так чинив, Йов щораз в такі днї.

Satan Attacks Job’s Character

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [e]Satan also came among them.

Сталося ж одного дня, що сини Божі прийшли стати перед Господом. Прийшов і Сатана між ними.

And the Lord said to [f]Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

І поспитав Господь Сатану: Звідкіля прийшов єси? Відказав Господеві Сатана й промовив: Я ходив по землї й обійшов її навкруги.

8

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you [g]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and [h]shuns evil?”

І сказав Господь Сатанї: А звернув ти ввагу на слугу мого Йова? бо нема такого на землї, такого щирого, справедливого, богобоязливого та щоб цурався так усього лихого.

9

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

І відказав Сатана Господеві та й промовив: Чи то ж Йов дармо такий богобоязливий? Чи не ти ж сам обгородив навкруги його й дом його й усе майно його?

10

Have You not [i]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Працю рук його благословив єси, й стада його ширяться все більш по країнї;

11

But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse[j] You to Your face!”

Простягни тільки руку твою й торкнись до всього, що він має, — чи буде він благословити Тебе?

12

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [k]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

І сказав Господь Сатанї: Ну, так нехай все, що його, буде в руцї твоїй, тільки на його самого не простягай руки твоєї. І пійшов Сатана з перед лиця Господнього.

13

Job Loses His Property and Children

Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;

Одного ж дня, як сини й дочки Йовові саме їли й пили вино в дому старшого брата свого,

14

and a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

Прийшов посел до Йова та й сповістив: Воли були в плузї, а ослицї паслись поблизу,

15

when the [l]Sabeans [m]raided them and took them away — indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

15

Аж се — набігли Савеї та й позаймали їх; кметї ж повитинали мечем; один я втїк сповістити тебе.

16

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and [n]consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Ще він говорив, аж приходить другий й говорить: Огонь Божий упав з неба й пройшов, палаючи, проміж вівцями й кметями та й пожер їх; один я втїк сповістити тебе.

17

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Ще сей говорив, аж ійде другий й говорить: Халдеї зложили три ватаги, напали на верблюди та й позаймали їх; кметї ж повистинали мечем; один я втїк, сповістити тебе.

18

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Ще говорив сей, аж приходить инший й говорить: Сини твої й дочки трапезували й пили вино в дому старшого брата свого,

19

and suddenly a great wind came from [o]across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

19

Аж несподївано схопилась буря від пустинї, наперла на всї чотири угли в будинку, і дім завалився на дїти та й вони погинули; один я втїк сповістити тебе.

20

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

20

І встав Йов, роздер одежу на собі та й обстриг волоссє на голові, припав до землї й поклонився,

21

And he said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

21

І промовив: Нагим вийшов я з матерньої утроби, нагим і вернусь. Господь дав, Господь і взяв; як до вподоби було Господеві, так і сталося; нехай буде імя Господнє благословенне!

22

In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

22

У всьому тому не провинив Йов, і не виповів нїчого безумного проти Бога.
