Job and His Family in Uz

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and [a]shunned evil.

1

Був чоловік у країні Уц, на ім'я́ йому́ Йов. І був чоловік цей невинний та праведний, і він Бога боявся, а від злого втікав.

2

And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

2

І народи́лися йому се́меро синів та три дочки́.

Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the [b]people of the East.

А маєток його був: сім тисяч худоби дрібно́ї, і три тисячі верблю́дів, і п'ять сотень пар худоби великої, і п'ять сотень ослиць та дуже багато рабів. І був цей чоловік більший від усіх синів сходу.

And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

А сини його ходили один до о́дного, і справляли гости́ну в домі того, чий був день. І посилали вони, і кликали трьох своїх сесте́р, щоб їсти та пити із ними.

So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and [c]sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed[d] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.

І бувало, як миналося ко́ло бенке́тних днів, то Йов посилав за ді́тьми й освячував їх, — і вставав він рано вранці, і прино́сив цілопа́лення за числом їх усіх, бо Йов казав: „Може згрішили сини мої, і знева́жили Бога в серці своєму“. Так робив Йов по всі дні.

Satan Attacks Job’s Character

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [e]Satan also came among them.

І сталося одно́го дня, і поприхо́дили Божі сини, щоб стати при Господі. І прийшов поміж ними й сатана́.

7

And the Lord said to [f]Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

І сказав Госпо́дь до сатани́: „Звідки ти йдеш?“ А сатана́ відповів Господе́ві й сказав: „Я мандрува́в по землі та й перейшов її“.

8

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you [g]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and [h]shuns evil?”

І сказав Господь до сатани: „Чи звернув ти увагу на раба Мого́ Йова? Бо немає такого, як він, на землі: муж він невинний та праведний, що Бога боїться, а від злого втікає“.

9

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

І відповів сатана́ Господе́ві й сказав: „Чи ж Йов да́рмо боїться Бога?

10

Have You not [i]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Чи ж Ти не забезпе́чив його, і дім його, і все, що його? Чин його рук Ти поблагослови́в, а маєток його поши́рився по кра́ю.

11

But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse[j] You to Your face!”

Але простягни тільки руку Свою, і доторкни́ся до всього, що його, — чи він не знева́жить Тебе перед лицем Твоїм?“

12

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [k]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

І сказав Господь до сатани́: „Ось усе, що його́, — у твоїй руці, тільки на нього само́го не простягай своєї руки!“ І пішов сатана́ від лиця Господнього.

13

Job Loses His Property and Children

Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;

І сталося одно́го дня, коли сини́ його та до́чки його їли та вино пили в домі свого перворо́дженого брата,

14

and a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

14

то прибіг до Йова послане́ць та й сказав: „Худоба велика ора́ла, а ослиці па́слися при них.

15

when the [l]Sabeans [m]raided them and took them away — indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

15

Аж тут напали сабеї й позабирали їх, а слуг повбивали ві́стрям меча. І втік тільки я сам, щоб доне́сти тобі“.

16

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and [n]consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Він ще говорив, аж прибігає інший та й каже: „З неба спав Божий огонь, і спали́в ота́ру та слуг, та й пожер їх. А втік тільки я сам, щоб доне́сти тобі“.

17

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Він ще говорив, аж біжить ще інший та й каже: „Халде́ї поділи́лися на три відділи, і напали на верблю́дів, та й позабира́ли їх, а слуг повбива́ли ві́стрям меча. І втік тільки я сам, щоб доне́сти тобі“.

18

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Поки він говорив, аж надбігає ще інший та й каже: „Сини твої та до́чки твої їли та вино пили́ в домі свого перворо́дженого брата.

19

and suddenly a great wind came from [o]across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Аж рапто́во надійшов великий вітер з боку пустині, та й ударив на чотири роги дому, — і він упав на юнаків, і вони повмирали. І втік тільки я сам, щоб доне́сти тобі“.

20

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

20

І встав Йов, і розде́р плаща́ свого́, й обстриг свою го́лову, та й упав на землю, і поклонився,

21

And he said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

21

та й сказав: „Я вийшов наги́й із утроби матері своєї, і наги́й поверну́сь туди, в зе́млю! Господь дав, — і Господь узяв. Нехай буде благослове́нне Господнє Ім'я́!“

22

In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

При всьому цьому Йов не згрішив, і не сказав на Бога нічого безумного!
