Job and His Family in Uz

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and [a]shunned evil.

1

У країні Авсітіди був один чоловік на ім’я Йов, і той чоловік був праведний, непорочний, справедливий, побожний, який віддалявся від усякого злого діла.

And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

Було ж у нього сім синів і три дочки.

Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the [b]people of the East.

І в нього була худоба — сім тисяч овець, три тисячі верблюдів, п’ятсот пар волів, п’ятсот ослиць, які пасуться, і дуже велике господарство, і він звершував великі справи на землі. І чоловік той був із найбільш знатних жителів сходу сонця.

And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Коли його сини сходилися до нього, то відзначали торжество кожного дня, беручи разом із собою трьох своїх сестер, щоб їсти і пити з ними.

So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and [c]sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed[d] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.

І як тільки закінчувалися дні торжества, Йов, уставши вранці, посилав і очищував їх, і приносив за них жертву за їхнім числом, і одне теля за гріхи, за їхні душі. Бо Йов казав: Щоб часом мої сини у своїй думці не вчинили зло проти Бога. І так Йов чинив усі дні.

Satan Attacks Job’s Character

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [e]Satan also came among them.

Коли настав певний день, і ось Божі ангели прийшли, щоб постати перед Господом, то диявол прийшов з ними.

And the Lord said to [f]Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

І Господь запитав диявола: Звідки ти прийшов? А диявол у відповідь сказав Господу: Я прийшов, обійшовши землю і обійшовши піднебесну.

8

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you [g]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and [h]shuns evil?”

А Господь йому сказав: Чи звернув ти свою увагу на Мого раба Йова? Адже немає між тими, хто на землі, такого чоловіка, як він: непорочного, праведного, побожного, який віддаляється від усякого поганого діла!

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

А диявол у відповідь в присутності Господа сказав: Хіба не даром Йов вшановує Бога?

10

Have You not [i]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Чи не Ти поставив його зовнішню огорожу — і в середині його дому, і ззовні всього, що є довкола нього? Ти поблагословив діла його рук, і Ти зробив його худобу численною на землі.

11

But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse[j] You to Your face!”

Але простягни Твою руку і доторкнися до всього, що він має. Чи ж не поблагословить Тебе в обличчя?

12

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [k]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Тоді Господь сказав дияволові: Ось Я даю у твою руку все, що в нього є, та його самого не торкайся! І диявол відійшов від Господа.

13

Job Loses His Property and Children

Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;

І був подібний день, сини Йова і його дочки пили вино в домі їхнього старшого брата.

14

and a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

І ось вісник прийшов до Йова, і доповів йому: Пари волів орали, і ослиці паслися, тримаючись поблизу них.

15

when the [l]Sabeans [m]raided them and took them away — indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

15

Та розбійники, напавши, захопили їх у полон, а рабів вони повбивали мечами! Я ж сам-один, врятувавшись, прийшов тобі сповістити!

16

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and [n]consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Ще коли цей говорив, прийшов інший вісник і сказав Йовові: Вогонь упав із неба і спалив овець, і так само пожер пастухів! А я сам-один, врятувавшись, прийшов тобі сповістити!

17

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Ще як цей говорив, прийшов інший посланець і сказав Йовові: Кіннотники зробили проти нас три загони і оточили верблюдів, полонили їх, а рабів убили мечами! Я ж сам-один врятувався і прийшов тобі сповістити!

18

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Ще як цей говорив, приходить інший вісник, звіщаючи Йовові: Коли твої сини і твої дочки їли та пили в їхнього старшого брата,

19

and suddenly a great wind came from [o]across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

раптово здійнявся з пустелі сильний вітер і торкнувся чотирьох кутів дому, і дім завалився на твоїх дітей, і вони загинули! Я ж сам-один врятувався і прийшов тобі сповістити!

20

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

20

Тож Йов, уставши, роздер свій одяг і обстриг волосся голови, і, упавши на землю, поклонився і сказав:

21

And he said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Я сам нагим вийшов з лона моєї матері і нагим туди повернуся. Господь дав, Господь забрав. Сталося так, як було до вподоби Господу. Нехай Ім’я Господнє буде благословенне!

22

In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

22

У всьому цьому, що з ним трапилося, Йов у нічому не згрішив перед Господом і не виявив безумності перед Богом.
