Eliphaz Accuses Job of Folly

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

1

І відповів теманянин Еліфа́з та й сказав:

2

“Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,
And fill [a]himself with the east wind?

„Чи відповідатиме мудра люди́на знання́м вітряни́м, і східнім вітром напо́внить утробу свою?

3

Should he reason with unprofitable talk,
Or by speeches with which he can do no good?

Бу́де виправдуватися тим словом, що не надається, чи тими реча́ми, що пожитку немає від них?

4

Yes, you cast off fear,
And restrain [b]prayer before God.

4

Ти страх Божий руйнуєш тако́ж, і пусто́шиш молитву до Бога,

5

For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.

5

бо навчає провина твоя — твої уста, і ти вибираєш собі язика хитрунів.

6

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
Yes, your own lips testify against you.

Оскаржа́ють тебе твої уста, не я, й твої губи свідкують на те́бе:

7

“Are you the first man who was born?
Or were you made before the hills?

Чи ти народився люди́ною першою, чи раніше, ніж згі́р'я, ти ство́рений?

8

Have you heard the counsel of God?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

Чи ти слухав у Божій таємній нара́ді, та мудрість для себе забрав?

9

What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not in us?

9

Що ти знаєш, чого б ми не знали? Що ти зрозумів, — і не з нами воно?

10

Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Much older than your father.

10

Поміж нами і сивий, ото́й і старий, старший днями від ба́тька твого́.

11

Are the consolations of God too small for you,
And the word spoken [c]gently with you?

Чи мало для тебе — поті́шення Божі та слово, яке Він сховав у тобі́?

12

Why does your heart carry you away,
And [d]what do your eyes wink at,

Чого то підно́сить тебе твоє серце, й які то знаки́ твої очі дають,

13

That you turn your spirit against God,
And let such words go out of your mouth?

13

що на Бога зверта́єш ти духа свого́, і з своїх уст випускаєш подібні слова́?

14

“What is man, that he could be pure?
And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

Що таке чоловік, щоб опра́вданим бути, і щоб був справедливим від жінки наро́джений?

15

If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,

15

Таж Він на́віть святим Своїм не довіря́є, і не опра́вдані в о́чах Його небеса́, —

16

How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
Who drinks iniquity like water!

що ж тоді чоловік той бридки́й та зіпсутий, що п'є кривду, як воду?

17

“I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,

17

Я тобі розповім, — ти послухай мене, а що бачив, то те розкажу́,

18

What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received from their fathers,

18

про що мудрі доне́сли та від батьків своїх не затаїли того, —

19

To whom alone the [e]land was given,
And no alien passed among them:

19

їм самим була да́на земля, і не прихо́див чужий поміж них.

20

The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,
And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.

20

Безбожний тремти́ть по всі дні, а наси́льникові мало років захо́вано.

21

[f]Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.

21

Вереск жа́хів — у нього в уша́х, серед ми́ру прихо́дить на нього грабі́жник.

22

He does not believe that he will return from darkness,
For a sword is waiting for him.

22

Він не вірить, що ве́рнеться від темноти́, й він вичі́кується для меча́.

23

He wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.

23

Він мандру́є за хлібом, — та де він? Знає він, що для нього встано́влений день темноти́.

24

Trouble and anguish make him afraid;
They overpower him, like a king ready for [g]battle.

Страша́ть його у́тиск та гно́блення, хапають його, немов цар, що готовий до бо́ю,

25

For he stretches out his hand against God,
And acts defiantly against the Almighty,

25

бо руку свою простягав він на Бога, і повставав на Всемогу́тнього,

26

Running stubbornly against Him
With his strong, embossed shield.

26

проти Нього твердо́ю він шиєю бігав, товсти́ми хребта́ми щитів своїх.

27

“Though he has covered his face with his fatness,
And made his waist heavy with fat,

27

Бо закрив він обличчя своє своїм салом, і бо́ки обклав своїм жиром,

28

He dwells in desolate cities,
In houses which no one inhabits,
Which are destined to become ruins.

28

і сидів у міста́х поруйно́ваних, у дома́х тих, що в них не сидять, що на купи каміння призна́чені.

29

He will not be rich,
Nor will his wealth continue,
Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.

29

Він не буде багатий, і не всто́їться сила його, і по землі не поши́ряться їхні маєтки.

30

He will not depart from darkness;
The flame will dry out his branches,
And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.

30

Не всту́питься з те́мности він, по́лум'я висушить па́рост його, й духом уст Його буде він схо́плений.

31

Let him not trust in futile things, deceiving himself,
For futility will be his reward.

31

Хай не вірить в марно́ту заблу́каний, бо марно́тою буде заплата йому́, —

32

It will be accomplished before his time,
And his branch will not be green.

32

вона ви́повниться не за днів його, а його верхові́ття не буде зелене!

33

He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,
And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.

33

Поскидає наси́ллям, немов виноград, недозрілість свою, поро́нить він квіття своє, як оливка, —

34

For the company of hypocrites will be barren,
And fire will consume the tents of bribery.

бо збори безбожних спусто́шені будуть, а огонь пожере́ дім хаба́рника:

35

They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;
Their womb prepares deceit.”

35

він злом вагітні́є, й породить марно́ту, й ома́ну готує утро́ба його“.
