Eliphaz Accuses Job of Folly

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

1

Підхопивши, Еліфас, теманієць, сказав:

2

“Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,
And fill [a]himself with the east wind?

2

Чи дасть мудрий відповідь на повчання духа? Він наповнив біль лона,

3

Should he reason with unprofitable talk,
Or by speeches with which he can do no good?

звинувачуючи словами, якими не годиться, словами, від яких немає жодної користі.

4

Yes, you cast off fear,
And restrain [b]prayer before God.

Чи і ти не відкинув страх, довершив такі слова перед Господом?

5

For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.

5

Ти винний за слова твоїх уст, і ти не розсудив слова сильних.

6

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
Yes, your own lips testify against you.

Хай оскаржують тебе твої уста, а не я, і твої губи хай свідчать проти тебе.

7

“Are you the first man who was born?
Or were you made before the hills?

Бо ж що? Хіба ти народився першою людиною? Чи ти постав раніше за пагорби?

8

Have you heard the counsel of God?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

Чи ти чув накази Господні, чи до тебе прийшла мудрість?

9

What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not in us?

Адже що знаєш ти, чого ми не знаємо? Або що розумієш, чого й ми не розуміємо?

10

Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Much older than your father.

10

І старець, і древній між нами віком старший від твого батька!

11

Are the consolations of God too small for you,
And the word spoken [c]gently with you?

11

Ти був трохи покараний за дещо з того, у чому ти згрішив, ти говорив високо, гордовито.

12

Why does your heart carry you away,
And [d]what do your eyes wink at,

12

На що наважилося твоє серце, і на що піднялися твої очі,

13

That you turn your spirit against God,
And let such words go out of your mouth?

13

що ти вибухнув гнівом перед Господом, і вивів з уст такі слова?

14

“What is man, that he could be pure?
And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

Бо хто, будучи смертною людиною, буде непорочним, чи як буде праведним той, хто народився від жінки,

15

If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,

15

якщо святим Він не вірить, і небо не є чистим перед Ним?

16

How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
Who drinks iniquity like water!

16

Тож наскільки мерзенний і нечистий чоловік, котрий п’є неправду, наче напій!

17

“I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,

17

Сповіщу ж тобі, послухай мене. Тож я сповіщу тобі те, що я побачив,

18

What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received from their fathers,

18

те, що говорять мудрі й що не затаїли їхні батьки.

19

To whom alone the [e]land was given,
And no alien passed among them:

19

Їм самим дано землю, і на них не прийшов чужинець.

20

The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,
And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.

20

Усе життя безбожного в клопотах, і пораховані роки дані сильному,

21

[f]Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.

21

страх же його — в його вухах. Коли йому здається, що вже є в мирі, тоді прийде його знищення.

22

He does not believe that he will return from darkness,
For a sword is waiting for him.

22

Хай не вірить, що відвернеться від темряви, бо він вже переданий у руки залізного меча,

23

He wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.

призначений на їжу грифам. А в собі знає, що на нього очікує доля трупа. Темний день його налякає,

24

Trouble and anguish make him afraid;
They overpower him, like a king ready for [g]battle.

24

а біда і смуток захоплять його, наче полководця, який упаде в перших рядах.

25

For he stretches out his hand against God,
And acts defiantly against the Almighty,

25

Адже він підняв руки перед Господом, і перед Господом Вседержителем став твердошиєм,

26

Running stubbornly against Him
With his strong, embossed shield.

26

біг перед Ним гординею в товстих плечах свого щита,

27

“Though he has covered his face with his fatness,
And made his waist heavy with fat,

27

бо він закрив своє обличчя у своїй товщі та зробив облямівку на стегнах.

28

He dwells in desolate cities,
In houses which no one inhabits,
Which are destined to become ruins.

28

Нехай же поселиться в пустинних містах, увійде до незаселених домів. Те, що вони приготували, інші заберуть.

29

He will not be rich,
Nor will his wealth continue,
Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.

29

Він не розбагатіє, і його майно не залишиться. Він не кидатиме на землю тінь,

30

He will not depart from darkness;
The flame will dry out his branches,
And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.

30

і не втече від темряви. Нехай вітер висушить те, що в нього сходить, нехай же впаде його цвіт.

31

Let him not trust in futile things, deceiving himself,
For futility will be his reward.

31

Хай не вірить, що залишиться, бо марне поставиться йому.

32

It will be accomplished before his time,
And his branch will not be green.

32

Ним зрізане зітліє передчасно, і його галузка не покриється листям.

33

He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,
And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.

33

Нехай буде зібраний, як неспілий плід передчасно, нехай упаде, як цвіт оливки.

34

For the company of hypocrites will be barren,
And fire will consume the tents of bribery.

34

Бо свідчення безбожного — смерть, і вогонь спалить доми тих, хто бере хабарі.

35

They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;
Their womb prepares deceit.”

35

Він у лоні прийме болі, на нього найде марнота, а його черево понесе оману.
