New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • Satan Attacks Job’s Health

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.
  • Job’s Second Test

One day the members of the heavenly courta came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan,b came with them.
  • And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?”
Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”
  • “Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan.
Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”
  • Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to [a]destroy him without cause.”
  • Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless — a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.”
  • So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
  • Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life.
  • But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely [b]curse You to Your face!”
  • But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!”
  • And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”
  • “All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.”
  • So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
  • So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.
  • And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes.
  • Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes.
  • Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? [c]Curse God and die!”
  • His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.”
  • But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
  • But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
  • Job’s Three Friends

Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place — Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him.

  • Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish

When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.
  • And when they raised their eyes from afar, and did not recognize him, they lifted their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe and sprinkled dust on his head toward heaven.
  • When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief.
  • So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
  • Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.
