Satan Attacks Job’s Health

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

І сталося одно́го дня, і поприхо́дили Божі сини, щоб стати перед Господом; і прийшов також сатана́ поміж ними, щоб стати перед Господом.

And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?”
Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

І сказав Господь до сатани́: „Звідки ти йдеш?“ А сатана́ відповів Господе́ві й сказав: „Я мандрував по землі та й перейшов її“.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to [a]destroy him without cause.”

І сказав Господь до сатани́: „Чи звернув ти увагу на раба Мого Йо́ва? Бо немає такого, як він, на землі: муж він невинний та праведний, який Бога боїться, а від злого втікає. І він ще тримається міцно в своїй невинності, а ти намовляв був Мене на нього, щоб без при́воду його зруйнувати“.

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

І відповів сатана Господе́ві й сказав: „Шкіра за шкіру, і все, що хто має, віддасть він за душу свою.

But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely [b]curse You to Your face!”

Але простягни но Ти руку Свою, і доторкнись до косте́й його та до тіла його, — чи він не зневажить Тебе перед лицем Твоїм?“

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”

І сказав Господь до сатани: „Ось він у руці твоїй, — тільки душу його бережи!“

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

І вийшов сатана від лиця Господнього, та й ударив Йова злим гнояко́м від стопи́ ноги́ його аж до його че́репа.

And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes.

А той узяв собі черепка́, щоб шкре́бти себе. І він сидів серед по́пелу.

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? [c]Curse God and die!”

І сказала йому його жінка: „Ти ще міцно тримаєшся в невинності своїй? Прокляни Бога — і помреш!“

But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

А він до неї відказав: „Ти гово́риш отак, як гово́рить яка з божеві́льних! Чи ж ми бу́дем приймати від Бога добре, а злого не при́ймем?“ При всьому тому Йов не згрішив своїми устами.

Job’s Three Friends

Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place — Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him.

I почули троє при́ятелів Йо́вових про все те нещастя, що прийшло на нього, і поприхо́дили кожен з місця свого: теманя́нин Еліфа́з, шух'я́нин Бідда́д та наама́тянин Цофа́р. І вмовилися вони прийти ра́зом, щоб похитати головою над ним та поті́шити його.

And when they raised their eyes from afar, and did not recognize him, they lifted their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe and sprinkled dust on his head toward heaven.

І звели́ вони зда́лека очі свої, — і не пізна́ли його. І підне́сли вони голос свій, та й заголоси́ли, і розде́рли кожен одежу свою, і кидали по́рох над своїми головами аж до неба.

So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

І сиділи вони з ним на землі сім день та сім ноче́й, і ніхто не промо́вив до нього ні слова, бо вони ба́чили, що біль його ве́льми великий
