Elihu Contradicts Job’s Friends

So these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

І переста́ли ті троє мужів відповідати Йову, бо він був справедливий в оча́х своїх.

Then the wrath of Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was aroused against Job; his wrath was aroused because he justified himself rather than God.

І запалився гнів Елігу, сина Барах'їлового, бузянина, з роду Рамового, — на Йова запали́вся гнів його за те, що той уважав душу свою справедливішою за Бога.

Also against his three friends his wrath was aroused, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

Також на трьох при́ятелів його запалився його гнів за те, що не знайшли вони відповіді, а зробили тільки Йова винним.

Now because they were years older than he, Elihu had waited [a]to speak to Job.

А Елігу вичікував Йова та їх із словами, бо вони були ста́рші віком за нього.

When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was aroused.

І побачив Елігу, що нема належної відповіді в устах тих трьох людей, — і запалився його гнів!

So Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, answered and said:
“I am young in years, and you are very old;
Therefore I was afraid,
And dared not declare my opinion to you.

І відповів бузянин Елі́гу, син Барах'їлів, та й сказав: „Молодий я літа́ми, ви ж ста́рші, тому́ то я стри́мувався та боявся знання́ своє ви́словити вам

I said, [b]‘Age should speak,
And multitude of years should teach wisdom.’

Я поду́мав: Хай вік промовля́є, і хай розуму вчить многолі́ття!

8

But there is a spirit in man,
And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.

Справді, дух — він у люди́ні, та Всемогутнього по́дих їх мудрими чинить.

9

Great[c] men are not always wise,
Nor do the aged always understand justice.

Многолі́тні не за́вжди розумні, і не все розуміються в праві старі́.

10

“Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me,
I also will declare my opinion.’

10

Тому́ я кажу: Послухай мене, — хай знання́ своє ви́словлю й я!

11

Indeed I waited for your words,
I listened to your reasonings, while you searched out what to say.

Тож слів ваших вичі́кував я, наставляв свої уші до вашої мудрости, поки справу ви дослідите́.

12

I paid close attention to you;
And surely not one of you convinced Job,
Or answered his words —

І я приглядався до вас, й ось немає між вами, хто б Йо́ву довів, хто б відповідь дав на слова́ його!

13

Lest you say,
‘We have found wisdom’;
God will vanquish him, not man.

Щоб ви не сказали: „Ми мудрість знайшли: не люди́на, а Бог перемо́же його́!“

14

Now he has not [d]directed his words against me;
So I will not answer him with your words.

14

Не на мене слова́ він скеро́вував, і я не відповім йому мовою вашою.

15

“They are dismayed and answer no more;
Words escape them.

15

Полякались вони, вже не відповіда́ють, не мають вже слів,

16

And I have waited, because they did not speak,
Because they stood still and answered no more.

16

Я чекав, що не бу́дуть вони говорити, що спини́лись, не відповідають уже.

17

I also will answer my part,
I too will declare my opinion.

17

Відповім також я свою ча́стку, і ви́словлю й я свою ду́мку.

18

For I am full of words;
The spirit within me compels me.

18

Бо я повний слова́ми, — дух мойо́го нутра́ докуча́є мені.

19

Indeed my [e]belly is like wine that has no [f]vent;
It is ready to burst like new wineskins.

19

Ось утро́ба моя, мов вино невідкри́те, — вона трі́скається, як нові бурдюки́!

20

I will speak, that I may find relief;
I must open my lips and answer.

20

Нехай я скажу́ — й буде легше мені, нехай у́ста відкрию свої — й відповім!

21

Let me not, I pray, show partiality to anyone;
Nor let me flatter any man.

На осо́бу не бу́ду уваги звертати, не буду підле́щуватись до люди́ни,

22

For I do not know how to flatter,
Else my Maker would soon take me away.

бо не вмію підле́щуватись! Коли ж ні, — нехай зараз ві́зьме мене мій Творе́ць!
