Eliphaz: Job Has Sinned

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

1

І відповів теманянин Еліфа́з та й сказав:

2

“If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?

2

„Коли спро́бувать слово до те́бе, — чи мука не бу́де ще більша? Та хто стри́мати зможе слова́?

3

Surely you have instructed many,
And you have strengthened weak hands.

3

Таж ти́ багатьо́х був навчав, а ру́ки осла́блі зміцняв,

4

Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
And you have strengthened the [a]feeble knees;

4

того, хто́ спотика́всь, підіймали слова́ твої, а коліна тремткі́ ти зміцняв!

5

But now it comes upon you, and you are weary;
It touches you, and you are troubled.

А тепер, як нещастя на тебе найшло, то ти змучився, тебе досягло́ воно — і ти налякався.

6

Is not your reverence your confidence?
And the integrity of your ways your hope?

Хіба не була́ богобійність твоя за наді́ю твою, за твоє сподіва́ння — невинність доріг твоїх?

7

“Remember now, who ever perished being innocent?
Or where were the upright ever cut off?

Пригада́й но, чи гинув невинний, і де праведні ви́гублені?

8

Even as I have seen,
Those who plow iniquity
And sow trouble reap the same.

8

Як я бачив таких, що орали були́ беззако́ння, та сі́яли кривду, то й жали її:

9

By the blast of God they perish,
And by the breath of His anger they are consumed.

9

вони гинуть від по́диху Божого, і́ від духу гнівно́го Його погибають!

10

The roaring of the lion,
The voice of the fierce lion,
And the teeth of the young lions are broken.

10

Леви́не рича́ння й рик лютого лева минає, і левчука́м вилуща́ються зуби.

11

The old lion perishes for lack of prey,
And the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

11

Гине лев, як немає здоби́чі, і левеня́та леви́ці втікають.

12

“Now a word was secretly brought to me,
And my ear received a whisper of it.

12

І закрада́ється слово до мене, і моє ухо почуло ось де́що від нього.

13

In disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night,
When deep sleep falls on men,

У розду́муваннях над нічни́ми виді́ннями, коли́ міцний сон обіймає людей,

14

Fear came upon me, and trembling,
Which made all my bones shake.

14

спіткав мене жах та тремті́ння, і багато косте́й моїх він струсону́в, —

15

Then a spirit passed before my face;
The hair on my body stood up.

15

і дух перейшов по обличчі моїм, стало ду́ба воло́сся на тілі моїм.

16

It stood still,
But I could not discern its appearance.
A form was before my eyes;
There was silence;
Then I heard a voice saying:

Він стояв, але я не пізнав його ви́гляду, — образ навпро́ти очей моїх був, і тихий голос почув я:

17

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?

„Хіба́ праведні́ша люди́на за Бога, хіба чоловік за свойо́го Творця́ є чистіший?

18

If He puts no trust in His servants,
If He charges His angels with error,

Таж рабам Своїм Він не йме віри, і накладає вину й на Своїх Анголі́в!

19

How much more those who dwell in houses of clay,
Whose foundation is in the dust,
Who are crushed before a moth?

19

Що́ ж тоді ме́шканці гли́няних хат, що в по́росі їхня основа? — Як міль, вони будуть розча́влені!

20

They are broken in pieces from morning till evening;
They perish forever, with no one regarding.

20

Вони то́вчені зра́нку до вечора, — і без по́мочі гинуть наза́вжди.

21

Does not their own excellence go away?
They die, even without wisdom.’

21

Слава їхня мина́ється з ними, — вони помирають не в мудрості!
