New King James Version

New American Standard Bible

  • God’s Power and Wisdom

    Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:
  • Job: What Can I Say?

    Then the LORD said to Job,
  • “Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
    He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”
  • “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty?
    Let him who reproves God answer it.”
  • Job’s Response to God

    Then Job answered the Lord and said:
  • Then Job answered the LORD and said,
  • “Behold, I am vile;
    What shall I answer You?
    I lay my hand over my mouth.
  • “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You?
    I lay my hand on my mouth.
  • Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
    Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
  • “Once I have spoken, and I will not answer;
    Even twice, and I will add nothing more.”
  • God’s Challenge to Job

    Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

  • God Questions Job

    Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm and said,
  • “Now [a]prepare yourself like a man;
    I will question you, and you shall answer Me:
  • “Now gird up your loins like a man;
    I will ask you, and you instruct Me.
  • “Would you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
    Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
  • “Will you really annul My judgment?
    Will you condemn Me that you may be justified?
  • Have you an arm like God?
    Or can you thunder with a voice like His?
  • “Or do you have an arm like God,
    And can you thunder with a voice like His?
  • Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
    And array yourself with glory and beauty.
  • “Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity,
    And clothe yourself with honor and majesty.
  • Disperse the rage of your wrath;
    Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
  • “Pour out the overflowings of your anger,
    And look on everyone who is proud, and make him low.
  • Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low;
    Tread down the wicked in their place.
  • “Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him,
    And tread down the wicked where they stand.
  • Hide them in the dust together,
    Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
  • “Hide them in the dust together;
    Bind them in the hidden place.
  • Then I will also confess to you
    That your own right hand can save you.
  • “Then I will also confess to you,
    That your own right hand can save you.
  • “Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
    He eats grass like an ox.

  • God’s Power Shown in Creatures

    “Behold now, Behemoth, which I made as well as you;
    He eats grass like an ox.
  • See now, his strength is in his hips,
    And his power is in his stomach muscles.
  • “Behold now, his strength in his loins
    And his power in the muscles of his belly.
  • He moves his tail like a cedar;
    The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
  • “He bends his tail like a cedar;
    The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
  • His bones are like beams of bronze,
    His ribs like bars of iron.
  • “His bones are tubes of bronze;
    His limbs are like bars of iron.
  • He is the first of the ways of God;
    Only He who made him can bring near His sword.
  • “He is the first of the ways of God;
    Let his maker bring near his sword.
  • Surely the mountains yield food for him,
    And all the beasts of the field play there.
  • “Surely the mountains bring him food,
    And all the beasts of the field play there.
  • He lies under the lotus trees,
    In a covert of reeds and marsh.
  • “Under the lotus plants he lies down,
    In the covert of the reeds and the marsh.
  • The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
    The willows by the brook surround him.
  • “The lotus plants cover him with shade;
    The willows of the brook surround him.
  • Indeed the river may rage,
    Yet he is not disturbed;
    He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,
  • “If a river rages, he is not alarmed;
    He is confident, though the Jordan rushes to his mouth.
  • Though he takes it in his eyes,
    Or one pierces his nose with a snare.
  • “Can anyone capture him when he is on watch,
    With barbs can anyone pierce his nose?
