New King James Version

New International Version

  • God’s Power and Wisdom

    Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:
  • The Lord said to Job:
  • “Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
    He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”
  • “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him?
    Let him who accuses God answer him!”
  • Job’s Response to God

    Then Job answered the Lord and said:
  • Then Job answered the Lord:
  • “Behold, I am vile;
    What shall I answer You?
    I lay my hand over my mouth.
  • “I am unworthy — how can I reply to you?
    I put my hand over my mouth.
  • Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
    Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
  • I spoke once, but I have no answer —
    twice, but I will say no more.”
  • God’s Challenge to Job

    Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
  • Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:
  • “Now [a]prepare yourself like a man;
    I will question you, and you shall answer Me:
  • “Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.
  • “Would you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
    Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
  • “Would you discredit my justice?
    Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
  • Have you an arm like God?
    Or can you thunder with a voice like His?
  • Do you have an arm like God’s,
    and can your voice thunder like his?
  • Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
    And array yourself with glory and beauty.
  • Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
    and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
  • Disperse the rage of your wrath;
    Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
  • Unleash the fury of your wrath,
    look at all who are proud and bring them low,
  • Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low;
    Tread down the wicked in their place.
  • look at all who are proud and humble them,
    crush the wicked where they stand.
  • Hide them in the dust together,
    Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
  • Bury them all in the dust together;
    shroud their faces in the grave.
  • Then I will also confess to you
    That your own right hand can save you.
  • Then I myself will admit to you
    that your own right hand can save you.
  • “Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
    He eats grass like an ox.
  • “Look at Behemoth,
    which I made along with you
    and which feeds on grass like an ox.
  • See now, his strength is in his hips,
    And his power is in his stomach muscles.
  • What strength it has in its loins,
    what power in the muscles of its belly!
  • He moves his tail like a cedar;
    The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
  • Its tail sways like a cedar;
    the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
  • His bones are like beams of bronze,
    His ribs like bars of iron.
  • Its bones are tubes of bronze,
    its limbs like rods of iron.
  • He is the first of the ways of God;
    Only He who made him can bring near His sword.
  • It ranks first among the works of God,
    yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.
  • Surely the mountains yield food for him,
    And all the beasts of the field play there.
  • The hills bring it their produce,
    and all the wild animals play nearby.
  • He lies under the lotus trees,
    In a covert of reeds and marsh.
  • Under the lotus plants it lies,
    hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
  • The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
    The willows by the brook surround him.
  • The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
    the poplars by the stream surround it.
  • Indeed the river may rage,
    Yet he is not disturbed;
    He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,
  • A raging river does not alarm it;
    it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.
  • Though he takes it in his eyes,
    Or one pierces his nose with a snare.
  • Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
    or trap it and pierce its nose?
