God’s Power and Wisdom

Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:

1

І відказав Господь Йовові з бурі й промовив:

“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”

Підпережи чересла твої, як мужові годиться: я питати мусь у тебе, а ти говори менї.

Job’s Response to God

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

Ти хочеш опрокинути присуд мій, хочеш винуватити мене, щоб себе якось оправдити?

4

“Behold, I am vile;
What shall I answer You?
I lay my hand over my mouth.

Чи така ж рука у тебе, як рука у Бога! Чи з'умієш загріміти таким голосом, як він?

5

Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”

А нуж, одягнись у величчє й славу, украси себе сяєвом і пишнотою;

God’s Challenge to Job

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

Вилий строгість гнїву твого, позирни на гордих і смири їх:

7

“Now [a]prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me:

Поглянь на всїх зарозумілих і принизи їх, та зітри безбожних таки на місцях їх;

8

“Would you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?

Закопай всїх їх у землю й лиця їх покрий тьмою.

9

Have you an arm like God?
Or can you thunder with a voice like His?

Тодї й я признаю, що правиця твоя може рятувати тебе.

10

Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
And array yourself with glory and beauty.

10

Ось бегемот*: Я создав його так само, як і тебе; він їсть траву, як віл;

11

Disperse the rage of your wrath;
Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.

11

Його сила в бедрах його, а крепкість його в мяснях черева його;

12

Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low;
Tread down the wicked in their place.

12

Махає він хвостом, неначе кедром, а бедра в його — з жил, мов сїтка, помотаних;

13

Hide them in the dust together,
Bind their faces in hidden darkness.

13

Ноги в його, як мідяні труби; костї — мов залїзні прути;

14

Then I will also confess to you
That your own right hand can save you.

14

Се — верх доріг (дїл) Божих; тільки Творець може наблизити до його меча свого;

15

“Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
He eats grass like an ox.

15

Гори дають йому поживу, там граються всї зьвірята польові;

16

See now, his strength is in his hips,
And his power is in his stomach muscles.

16

Він під гілястими деревами лягає, в сховищах рогізних і в болотах;

17

He moves his tail like a cedar;
The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.

Листаті дерева окривають його своєю тїнню, ивина надводня обіймає його;

18

His bones are like beams of bronze,
His ribs like bars of iron.

18

Ось він пє з ріки й не страхаєсь; байдуже йому, нехай би й Йордань полилась у рот йому.

19

He is the first of the ways of God;
Only He who made him can bring near His sword.

Чи ж візьме хто його в очах його (приступом), й чи проколе йому носа шилом.

20

Surely the mountains yield food for him,
And all the beasts of the field play there.

20

Чи можеш ти вудкою витягнути (з води) левіятана* й верівкою вхопити за язик його?

21

He lies under the lotus trees,
In a covert of reeds and marsh.

21

Чи вправиш ти в ніздрі йому каблучку? Чи проколеш іглою челюсть йому?

22

The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
The willows by the brook surround him.

Чи благати ме тебе він і говорити лагідно з тобою?

23

Indeed the river may rage,
Yet he is not disturbed;
He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,

Чи ввійде він в умову з тобою, й ти візьмеш його собі на завсїди за слугу?

24

Though he takes it in his eyes,
Or one pierces his nose with a snare.

24

Чи, мов пташкою, будеш ним забавлятись, і звяжеш його про дївчаток твоїх?
