God’s Power and Wisdom

Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:

1

І говорив Господь Йову й сказав:

“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”

„Чи буде ставати на прю з Всемогутнім огу́дник? Хто сперечається з Богом, хай на це відповість!“

Job’s Response to God

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

І Йов відповів Господе́ві й сказав:

4

“Behold, I am vile;
What shall I answer You?
I lay my hand over my mouth.

„Оце я знікче́мнів, — що ж маю Тобі відповісти? Я кладу́ свою руку на уста свої.

5

Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”

Я раз говорив був, і вже не скажу́, а вдруге — і більш не дода́м“!

God’s Challenge to Job

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

І відповів Господь Йову із бурі й сказав:

7

“Now [a]prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me:

„Підпережи́ но ти сте́гна свої, як мужчи́на: Я буду питати тебе, — ти ж поя́снюй Мені!

8

“Would you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?

Чи ти хочеш пору́шити право Моє, винува́тити Мене, щоб опра́вданим бути?

9

Have you an arm like God?
Or can you thunder with a voice like His?

Коли маєш раме́но, як Бог, і голосом ти загрими́ш, немов Він,

10

Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
And array yourself with glory and beauty.

10

то окрась Ти себе пишното́ю й вели́чністю, зодягни́ся у славу й красу́!

11

Disperse the rage of your wrath;
Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.

11

Розпоро́ш лютість гніву свого́, і поглянь на все горде — й прини́зь ти його́!

12

Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low;
Tread down the wicked in their place.

Поглянь на все горде — й його впокори́, поспиха́й нечестивих на їхньому місці,

13

Hide them in the dust together,
Bind their faces in hidden darkness.

13

поховай їх у по́росі ра́зом, а їхні обличчя обви́й в укритті́.

14

Then I will also confess to you
That your own right hand can save you.

14

Тоді й Я тебе сла́вити буду, як правиця твоя допоможе тобі!

15

“Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
He eats grass like an ox.

15

А ось бегемо́т, що його Я створив, як тебе, — траву, як худо́ба велика, він їсть.

16

See now, his strength is in his hips,
And his power is in his stomach muscles.

16

Ото сила його в його сте́гнах, його ж мі́цність — у м'я́зах його живота́.

17

He moves his tail like a cedar;
The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.

Випросто́вує він, немов ке́дра, свойо́го хвоста́, жили сте́гон його поспліта́лись.

18

His bones are like beams of bronze,
His ribs like bars of iron.

Його кості — немов мідяні оті ру́ри, костома́хи його — як ті пру́ття залізні.

19

He is the first of the ways of God;
Only He who made him can bring near His sword.

Голова оце Божих доріг; і тільки Творе́ць його може зблизи́ти до нього меча.

20

Surely the mountains yield food for him,
And all the beasts of the field play there.

20

Бо гори прино́сять поживу йому, і там гра́ється вся звірина́ польова́.

21

He lies under the lotus trees,
In a covert of reeds and marsh.

21

Під ло́тосами він виле́жується, в укритті́ очере́ту й болота.

22

The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
The willows by the brook surround him.

Ло́тоси тінню своєю вкривають його, топо́лі поточні його обгорта́ють.

23

Indeed the river may rage,
Yet he is not disturbed;
He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,

23

Ось підійма́ється рі́чка, та він не боїться її, він безпечний, хоча б сам Йорда́н йому в па́щу впливав!

24

Though he takes it in his eyes,
Or one pierces his nose with a snare.

24

Хто може схопи́ти його в його о́чах, гака́ми ніздрю́ продіра́вити?
