Eliphaz: Job Is Chastened by God

“Call out now;
Is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the holy ones will you turn?

1

Клич же, коли є хто, щоб на твій клик озвався. Та й до кого ти з між сьвятих обернешся?

2

For wrath kills a foolish man,
And envy slays a simple one.

2

О, так, безумного завзяттє вбиває, а нерозважливого погубляє досада.

3

I have seen the foolish taking root,
But suddenly I cursed his dwelling place.

Я бачив, як дурний закоренявся, та й зараз віщував проклін домівцї його:

4

His sons are far from safety,
They are crushed in the gate,
And there is no deliverer.

Дїти його далекі від щастя, бити муть їх у воротях (на судї), і не буде їм оборонника.

5

Because the hungry eat up his harvest,
[a]Taking it even from the thorns,
[b]And a snare snatches their [c]substance.

Збори жнив його неситі поїдять, ба й зміж терня заберуть їх, а зажерливцї поглотять майно його.

6

For affliction does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble spring from the ground;

Так, біда не зпід землї береться, й не на ниві родиться недоля.

7

Yet man is born to [d]trouble,
As the sparks fly upward.

Нї, людина родиться на муку, як іскорки, щоб їм летїти вгору.

8

“But as for me, I would seek God,
And to God I would commit my cause —

Я б обернувсь до Бога, передав би справу мою Богові,

9

Who does great things, and unsearchable,
Marvelous things without number.

9

Що творить дїла великі й недослїдимі, чудні й без лїку,

10

He gives rain on the earth,
And sends waters on the fields.

10

Дає дощі землї й води на поля;

11

He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.

11

Принижених у гору підіймає, а засмученим дає дознати щастя.

12

He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
So that their hands cannot carry out their plans.

Він розбиває задуми підступних, і руки їх не доводять до кінця те, що почали.

13

He catches the wise in their own craftiness,
And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.

Премудрих ловить він їх лукавством, і рада хитрих не вдається:

14

They meet with darkness in the daytime,
And grope at noontime as in the night.

14

У день вони мов в темряві блукають, а в полуднї полапки, мов ніччю, шукають.

15

But He saves the needy from the sword,
From the mouth of the mighty,
And from their hand.

15

Він рятує бідного од меча уст їх і від руки потужного;

16

So the poor have hope,
And injustice shuts her mouth.

16

І так є нещасливому надїя, а неправда затулює уста свої.

17

“Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects;
Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.

Блаженний той, кого Господь карає, тим не цурайсь Господнього навчання!

18

For He bruises, but He binds up;
He wounds, but His hands make whole.

18

Поранить він, та сам перевяже рану; ударить він, та його ж руки й гоять.

19

He shall deliver you in six troubles,
Yes, in seven no evil shall touch you.

19

В шестьох бідах тебе він порятує, та й в сьомій не доторкнесь тебе лихо.

20

In famine He shall redeem you from death,
And in war from the [e]power of the sword.

20

У голодї спасе тебе од смертї, а на війнї — од мечового вдару.

21

You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue,
And you shall not be afraid of destruction when it comes.

21

Сховаєшся від бича (лихого) язика, й не злякаєшся спустошення, коли воно прийде.

22

You shall laugh at destruction and famine,
And you shall not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

22

Із спустошення й голоду будеш сьміятись, і зьвірів земних не будеш лякатись.

23

For you shall have a covenant with the stones of the field,
And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.

23

Бо в змові з каміннєм у полі будеш, і з польовим зьвіррєм (наче) в договорі.

24

You shall know that your tent is in peace;
You shall visit your dwelling and find nothing amiss.

24

І взнаєш, що намет твій безпечен, а оглядаючи домівку твою, ти не согрішиш*.

25

You shall also know that your descendants shall be many,
And your offspring like the grass of the earth.

25

І побачиш, що потомство твоє многолїчне, й пагонцїв твоїх, як трави на землї.

26

You shall come to the grave at a full age,
As a sheaf of grain ripens in its season.

26

Увійдеш у гріб, достиглий (віком), як укладаються снопи пшеничні у свій час.

27

Behold, this we have searched out;
It is true.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

27

От чого ми дознались; та й так воно й є; вислухай се й затямуй собі!
