Why do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why do You hide in times of trouble?

1

Чому, о Господи, стоїш здалека, ховаєшся під час скорботи?

The wicked in his pride [a]persecutes the poor;
Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised.

Коли гордує грішник, страждає вбогий і ловиться в лихі задуми, що той намислив.

For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire;
[b]He blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord.

Бо грішний вихваляється бажанням серця свого, і захланний хулить і зневажає Бога.

The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God;
[c]God is in none of his thoughts.

Говорить грішник у своїй буті: “Не буде суду! Нема Бога! Такі й усі думки в нього.

His ways [d]are always prospering;
Your judgments are far above, out of his sight;
As for all his enemies, he sneers at them.

Перед ним завжди стелиться щасна дорога. Суди твої далеко геть від нього, усіх противників своїх — він сміхом збуває.

He has said in his heart, “I shall not be moved;
I shall never be in adversity.”

Він каже в своїм серці: “Не піддамся! З роду в рід я не зазнаю лиха.”

His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression;
Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity.

Уста в нього — повні прокльонів, обману і лукавства, а під язиком у нього лихо й переступ.

He sits in the lurking places of the villages;
In the secret places he murders the innocent;
His eyes are secretly fixed on the helpless.

Іде на засідки біля осель, і потайки невинного вбиває, очима так і зорить за нещасним.

He lies in wait secretly, as a lion in his den;
He lies in wait to catch the poor;
He catches the poor when he draws him into his net.

Він засідає, притаївшись, неначе лев у своїй криївці, він засідає, щоб бідака запопасти, хапає бідолаху й тягне у свою сітку.

So [e]he crouches, he lies low,
That the helpless may fall by his [f]strength.

Зіщулившись, до землі прилягає, і падають нещасні в його кігті.

He has said in his heart,
“God has forgotten;
He hides His face;
He will never see.”

Каже у своїм серці: “Забув Бог, сховав лице своє й нічого вже не бачить.”

Arise, O Lord!
O God, lift up Your hand!
Do not forget the humble.

Устань, Господи Боже, піднеси руку! Не забудь убогих!

Why do the wicked renounce God?
He has said in his heart,
“You will not require an account.”

Чого б безбожник мав зневажати Бога, казати у своєму серці: “Ти не каратимеш ніколи!”

But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief,
To repay it by Your hand.
The helpless commits[g] himself to You;
You are the helper of the fatherless.

Ти дивишся, ти бачиш біль і горе; вони завжди перед тобою. На тебе покладається нещасний, сироті — ти поміч.

15

Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man;
Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

Зламай лукавому й безбожникові рамено; ти покараєш його злобу, і більш її не буде.

16

The Lord is King forever and ever;
The nations have perished out of His land.

16

Господь — цар на віки вічні, зникли погани з його землі.

17

Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble;
You will prepare their heart;
You will cause Your ear to hear,

Почув єси, о Господи, бажання вбогих, їх серце підбадьорив, прихилив твоє вухо,

18

To [h]do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
That the man of the earth may [i]oppress no more.

18

щоб захистити право сироти й пригніченого, щоб земнородний не лякав уже більше.
