Israel’s Suffering in Egypt

Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt; each man and his household came with Jacob:

1

А оце ймення Ізраїлевих синів, що прийшли з Яковом до Єгипту. Кожен із домом своїм прибули:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;

Руви́м, Симео́н, Леві́й і Юда,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;

Іссаха́р, Завуло́н і Веніями́н,

4

Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Дан і Нефтали́м, Ґад і Аси́р.

All those [a]who were descendants of Jacob were seventy[b] persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already).

І було всіх душ, що вийшли з стегна́ Якового, сімдесят душ. А Йо́сип був ув Єгипті.

And Joseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation.

І вмер Йо́сип і всі браття його, та ввесь той рід.

But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and [c]grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

А Ізра́їлеві сини плодилися сильно, і розмножувались, та й стали вони надзвича́йно сильні. І напо́внився ними той край.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

І став над Єгиптом нови́й цар, що не знав Йосипа.

And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we;

І сказав він до народу свого: „Ось наро́д Ізра́їлевих синів численніший і сильніший від нас!

10

come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.”

Станьмо ж мудріші за нього, щоб він не мно́жився! Бо буде, коли нам трапиться війна, то прилучиться й він до ворогів наших, — і буде воювати проти нас, і вийде з цього краю“.

Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses.

І настановили над ним начальників податків, щоб його гноби́ти своїми тягарами. І він будував міста на запаси фараонові: Пітом і Рамесес.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel.

Але що більше його гноби́ли, то більше він мно́жився та більше ширився. І жахалися єгиптяни через Ізраїлевих синів.

So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with [d]rigor.

13

І Єгипет змушував синів Ізраїля тяжко працювати.

14

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage — in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.

Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah;

and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

і говорив: „Як будете бабува́ти єврейок, то дивіться на по́рід: коли буде син, то вбийте його, а коли це дочка, — то нехай живе“.

But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.

Але баби-сповитухи боялися Бога, і не робили того, як казав їм єгипетський цар. І вони лишали хлопчиків при житті.

18

So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?”

І покликав єгипетський цар баб-сповитух, та й сказав їм: „На́що ви робите цю річ, та лишаєте дітей при житті?“

19

And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they [e]are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.”

19

І сказали баби-сповитухи до фараона: „Бо єврейки не такі, як єгипетські жінки, — бо вони самі баби-сповитухи: поки при́йде до них баба-сповитуха, то вони вже й народять“.

20

Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and [f]grew very mighty.

20

І Бог чинив добро́ бабам-сповитухам, а наро́д розмножувався, і сильно міцнів.

21

And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He [g]provided households for them.

21

І сталося, тому, що ті баби-сповитухи боялися Бога, то Він будував їм доми.

22

So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is [h]born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

22

І наказав фараон усьому народові своєму, говорячи: „Кожного народженого єврейського сина — кидайте його до Річки, а кожну дочку — зоставляйте при житті!“
