New Living Translation

  • The Song of Moses

    Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying:
    “I will sing to the Lord,
    For He has triumphed gloriously!
    The horse and its rider
    He has thrown into the sea!
  • A Song of Deliverance

    Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD:
    “I will sing to the LORD,
    for he has triumphed gloriously;
    he has hurled both horse and rider
    into the sea.
  • The Lord is my strength and song,
    And He has become my salvation;
    He is my God, and I will praise Him;
    My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
  • The LORD is my strength and my song;
    he has given me victory.
    This is my God, and I will praise him —
    my father’s God, and I will exalt him!
  • The Lord is a man of war;
    The Lord is His name.
  • The LORD is a warrior;
    Yahweha is his name!

    His chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea.
  • Pharaoh’s chariots and army
    he has hurled into the sea.
    The finest of Pharaoh’s officers
    are drowned in the Red Sea.b
  • The depths have covered them;
    They sank to the bottom like a stone.
  • The deep waters gushed over them;
    they sank to the bottom like a stone.
  • “Your right hand, O Lord, has become glorious in power;
    Your right hand, O Lord, has dashed the enemy in pieces.
  • “Your right hand, O LORD,
    is glorious in power.
    Your right hand, O LORD,
    smashes the enemy.
  • And in the greatness of Your excellence
    You have overthrown those who rose against You;
    You sent forth Your wrath;
    It consumed them like stubble.
  • In the greatness of your majesty,
    you overthrow those who rise against you.
    You unleash your blazing fury;
    it consumes them like straw.
  • And with the blast of Your nostrils
    The waters were gathered together;
    The floods stood upright like a heap;
    The depths [a]congealed in the heart of the sea.
  • At the blast of your breath,
    the waters piled up!
    The surging waters stood straight like a wall;
    in the heart of the sea the deep waters became hard.
  • The enemy said, ‘I will pursue,
    I will overtake,
    I will divide the spoil;
    My desire shall be satisfied on them.
    I will draw my sword,
    My hand shall destroy them.’
  • “The enemy boasted, ‘I will chase them
    and catch up with them.
    I will plunder them
    and consume them.
    I will flash my sword;
    my powerful hand will destroy them.’
  • You blew with Your wind,
    The sea covered them;
    They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
  • But you blew with your breath,
    and the sea covered them.
    They sank like lead
    in the mighty waters.
  • “Who is like You, O Lord, among the [b]gods?
    Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
    Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
  • “Who is like you among the gods, O LORD —
    glorious in holiness,
    awesome in splendor,
    performing great wonders?
  • You stretched out Your right hand;
    The earth swallowed them.
  • You raised your right hand,
    and the earth swallowed our enemies.
  • You in Your mercy have led forth
    The people whom You have redeemed;
    You have guided them in Your strength
    To Your holy habitation.
  • “With your unfailing love you lead
    the people you have redeemed.
    In your might, you guide them
    to your sacred home.
  • “The people will hear and be afraid;
    Sorrow[c] will take hold of the inhabitants of Philistia.
  • The peoples hear and tremble;
    anguish grips those who live in Philistia.
  • Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;
    The mighty men of Moab,
    Trembling will take hold of them;
    All the inhabitants of Canaan will melt away.
  • The leaders of Edom are terrified;
    the nobles of Moab tremble.
    All who live in Canaan melt away;
  • Fear and dread will fall on them;
    By the greatness of Your arm
    They will be as still as a stone,
    Till Your people pass over, O Lord,
    Till the people pass over
    Whom You have purchased.
  • terror and dread fall upon them.
    The power of your arm
    makes them lifeless as stone
    until your people pass by, O LORD,
    until the people you purchased pass by.
  • You will bring them in and plant them
    In the mountain of Your inheritance,
    In the place, O Lord, which You have made
    For Your own dwelling,
    The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.
  • You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain —
    the place, O LORD, reserved for your own dwelling,
    the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established.
  • “The Lord shall reign forever and ever.”
  • The LORD will reign forever and ever!”
  • For the horses of Pharaoh went with his chariots and his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them. But the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
  • When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the sea, the LORD brought the water crashing down on them. But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground!
  • The Song of Miriam

    Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
  • Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced.
  • And Miriam answered them:
    “Sing to the Lord,
    For He has triumphed gloriously!
    The horse and its rider
    He has thrown into the sea!”

  • Bitter Waters Made Sweet

    So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water.

  • Bitter Water at Marah

    Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in this desert for three days without finding any water.
  • Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called [d]Marah.
  • When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”).
  • And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
  • Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded.
  • So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet.
    There He made a statute and an [e]ordinance for them, and there He tested them,
  • So Moses cried out to the LORD for help, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink.
    It was there at Marah that the LORD set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.
  • and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
  • He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you.”
  • Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.
  • After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.
