The Command to Leave Sinai

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’

І сказав Господь Мойсеєві: Іди, виходь звідси, — ти і твій народ, який ти вивів з Єгипетської землі, — в землю, про яку Я поклявся Авраамові, Ісаакові та Якову, кажучи: Вашим нащадкам дам її.

And I will send My Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.

Я ж пошлю Мого ангела перед тобою, і він вижене аморейця, хета, ферезейця, ґерґесейця, евейця і євусейця,

3

Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I [a]consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked[b] people.”

і введе тебе в землю, що тече молоком і медом. Оскільки Я не піду з тобою, бо ти є народом упертим, — аби не винищив тебе по дорозі.

And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.

І народ, почувши ці зловісні слова, засумував в одязі смутку.

For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your [c]ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’ ”

Тож Господь сказав Ізраїльським синам: Ви — народ упертий. Глядіть, аби Я не навів на вас іншої пошесті й не винищив вас! А тепер зніміть ваш пишний одяг і прикраси, і Я покажу тобі, народе, що вчиню з тобою.

So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.

І сини Ізраїля зняли свої прикраси і наряди, від часу перебування біля гори Хорив.

Moses Meets with the Lord

Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp.

А Мойсей, узявши свій намет, поставив поза табором — далеко від табору, і він названий був наметом свідчення. І було, що кожний, хто шукав Господа, виходив до намету поза табір.

So it was, whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle.

Коли ж виходив Мойсей до намету, то весь народ, кожний стояв біля входу свого намету, дивлячись, і всі стежили, як відходив Мойсей, доки він не входив у намет.

And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.

А коли Мойсей входив у намет, то хмарний стовп опускався і ставав над входом у намет, і Господь говорив з Мойсеєм.

All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door.

І весь народ бачив хмарний стовп, який стояв біля входу в намет. І, стоячи, весь народ поклонявся — кожний від входу свого намету.

So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.

І промовляв Господь до Мойсея віч-на-віч, так, як хтось спілкується зі своїм приятелем. І він повертався до табору. А його слуга, юнак Ісус, син Навина, не виходив з намету.

The Promise of God’s Presence

Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’

І сказав Мойсей Господу: Ось Ти мені кажеш: Веди цей народ! Ти ж не об’явив мені, кого пошлеш зі мною. Ти ж мені сказав: Знаю тебе понад усіх! — і: Ти маєш милість в Мене.

13

Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.”

Тому, коли я знайшов милість перед Тобою, то покажи мені Себе, щоб я явно побачив Тебе, аби я знайшов милість перед Тобою, і щоб пізнав я, що ці люди є Твоїм народом.

14

And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

14

А Він говорить: Я Сам ітиму перед тобою і дам тобі відпочинок.

15

Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.

15

Мойсей же каже Йому: Якщо Сам Ти не підеш, то не виводь мене звідси.

16

For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

16

А як стане дійсно відомо, що я знайшов милість перед Тобою, — я і Твій народ, — якщо не тим, що Ти йтимеш разом з нами? І таким чином прославимося, — я і Твій народ, — понад усякий народ, який є на землі.

17

So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

І Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Я зроблю тобі за цим словом, яке ти сказав, бо ти знайшов милість переді Мною, і Я пізнав тебе понад усіх.

18

And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”

18

А той каже: Покажи мені Твою славу!

19

Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

19

І Він сказав: Я пройду перед тобою в Моїй славі та проголошу Моє Ім’я перед тобою: Господь. І помилую того, до кого милостивий, і виявлю милосердя тому, до кого милосердний.

20

But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.”

20

Та Мого обличчя ти побачити не зможеш, — сказав Він, — оскільки людина не може побачити Моє обличчя і залишитися живою.

21

And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock.

21

І промовив Господь: Ось місце біля Мене: ти стоятимеш на скелі.

22

So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.

22

Коли ж проходитиме слава Моя, то Я поміщу тебе в розщелині скелі й покрию тебе Моєю рукою, доки не пройду.

23

Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

23

І заберу руку, і тоді побачиш Мене ззаду, а Моє обличчя не буде тобі показане.
