Guidance for the Young

My son, do not forget my law,
But let your heart keep my commands;

1

Мій сину! памятай, чого я тебе навчаю, й ховай заповідї мої в серцї.

2

For length of days and long life
And peace they will add to you.

Бо з ними жити меш на сьвітї довголїтен, і спокій принесуть вони тобі.

3

Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart,

Нехай любов тебе не кидає та правда; носи на шиї їх і напиши на таблицї серця твого, —

4

And so find favor and [a]high esteem
In the sight of God and man.

А станешся любим і приятним і Богові й людям.

5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;

5

Надїйсь на Господа всїм серцем твоїм і не покладайся на власний твій розум.

6

In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [b]direct your paths.

6

У всїх стежках твоїх думай про його, а він простувати ме шляхи твої.

7

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

Премудрим сам себе не величай у думцї; бійся Господа й остерегайсь лихого.

8

It will be health to your [c]flesh,
And strength[d] to your bones.

За се пошле тобі у тїло він здоровлє й силу в костї твої.

9

Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;

9

Шануй Господа приносами з майна твого й з первоплодів усього, що Бог тобі зародить,

10

So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

А набиті будуть гумна твої і тискарнї в тебе будуть переливатись молодим вином.

11

My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;

11

Кар Господнїх не відкидай, мій сину, й не вважай собі за тягар картання його;

12

For whom the Lord loves He corrects,
Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

12

Кого бо любить Господь, того він і карає, і ласкавий він до того, як отець до сина свого.

13

Happy is the man who finds wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding;

13

Блажен той чоловік, що придбав собі мудрість, і чоловік, що вмів добитися до знання.

14

For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver,
And her gain than fine gold.

Бо набуток се лїпший як набуток срібла, і хісна з його більш як із золота.

15

She is more precious than rubies,
And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.

15

Коралї дорогі, да не такі як мудрість, і нїчо з того, що ти бажаєш, не зрівняєся з нею.

16

Length of days is in her right hand,
In her left hand riches and honor.

16

В правій руцї в неї — життє на сьвітї довге, а в лївій у неї — багацтво й слава.

17

Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.

Усї шляхи її — шляхи приятні, і всї стежки її — задоволеннє (серця).

18

She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who [e]retain her.

18

Вона — деревом життя про тих, хто її здобуде, й щасна доля тих, хто її держиться.

19

The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
By understanding He established the heavens;

19

Премудростю Господь поставив землю, а розумом утвердив небо.

20

By His knowledge the depths were broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.

20

Його премудростю створились (морські) безоднї, і хмари кроплять росою.

21

My son, let them not depart from your eyes —
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;

21

Мій сину! не спускай їх із очей твоїх; ховай розум і розумную обачність.

22

So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.

22

Вони будуть жизнею душі твоїй і окрасою шиї в тебе.

23

Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.

23

Тодї ходити меш безпечно дорогою твоєю, й нога твоя не спіткнеться.

24

When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.

Коли лягати меш — не будеш боятись, а коли заснеш, — сон твій солодкий буде.

25

Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;

25

Не злякаєшся наглого страху, анї пагуби від безбожників, як на тебе спаде;

26

For the Lord will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.

26

Бо Господь буде надїєю тобі, й стерегти ме, щоб за ногу не спіймався.

27

Do not withhold good from [f]those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of your hand to do so.

27

У нуждї помогти бідасї не одхиляйся, коли рука твоя здолїє се зробити.

28

Do not say to your neighbor,
“Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,”
When you have it with you.

28

Не говори твойму ближньому: Йди собі й прийди знов, завтра дам тобі, коли маєш при собі. (Бо не знаєш, що принесе день завтрішнїй.)

29

Do not devise evil against your neighbor,
For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.

29

Не мисли зла тому, хто безпеч із тобою живе.

30

Do not strive with a man without cause,
If he has done you no harm.

30

Не сварись із чоловіком, не маючи причини, як він тобі не заподїяв злого.

31

Do not envy the oppressor,
And choose none of his ways;

31

Не завидуй чоловікові, що поступає напастливо, й не вибирай для себе дороги його;

32

For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord,
But His secret counsel is with the upright.

32

Бо гидує Господь переворотним, а з праведними у нього спільність.

33

The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked,
But He blesses the home of the just.

33

Господнє прокляттє на домівцї безбожних, а праведних житло він благословить.

34

Surely He scorns the scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.

34

З недовірків Господь сьміється, покірним же дає він благодать.

35

The wise shall inherit glory,
But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

35

Розумні одержать славу, а тих, що без ума, ганьба окриє.
