The Peril of Adultery

My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
[a]Lend your ear to my understanding,

1

Сын мой! внимай мудрости моей, и приклони ухо твоё к разуму моему,

2

That you may [b]preserve discretion,
And your lips may keep knowledge.

2

чтобы соблюсти рассудительность и чтобы уста твои сохранили знание.

3

For the lips of [c]an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is smoother than oil;

3

ибо мёд источают уста чужой жены, и мягче елея речь её;

4

But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.

4

но последствия от неё горьки, как полынь, остры, как меч обоюдоострый;

5

Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of [d]hell.

5

ноги её нисходят к смерти, стопы её достигают преисподней.

6

Lest you ponder her path of life —
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.

Если бы ты захотел постигнуть стезю жизни её, то пути её непостоянны, и ты не узнаешь их.

7

Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Итак, дети, слушайте меня и не отступайте от слов уст моих.

8

Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,

8

Держи дальше от неё путь твой и не подходи близко к дверям дома её,

9

Lest you give your [e]honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;

9

чтобы здоровья твоего не отдать другим и лет твоих мучителю;

10

Lest aliens be filled with your [f]wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;

10

чтобы не насыщались силою твоею чужие, и труды твои не были для чужого дома.

11

And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,

11

И ты будешь стонать после, когда плоть твоя и тело твоё будут истощены, —

12

And say:
“How I have hated instruction,
And my heart despised correction!

и скажешь: «зачем я ненавидел наставление, и сердце моё пренебрегало обличением,

13

I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!

13

и я не слушал голоса учителей моих, не приклонял уха моего к наставникам моим:

14

I was on the verge of total ruin,
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”

едва не впал я во всякое зло среди собрания и общества!»

15

Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.

15

Пей воду из твоего водоёма и текущую из твоего колодезя.

16

Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
[g]Streams of water in the streets?

Пусть не разливаются источники твои по улице, потоки вод — по площадям;

17

Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.

17

пусть они будут принадлежать тебе одному, а не чужим с тобою.

18

Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with the wife of your youth.

Источник твой да будет благословен; и утешайся женою юности твоей,

19

As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be [h]enraptured with her love.

любезною ланью и прекрасною серною: груди её да упоявают тебя во всякое время, любовью её услаждайся постоянно.

20

For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?

20

И для чего тебе, сын мой, увлекаться постороннею и обнимать груди чужой?

21

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He [i]ponders all his paths.

21

Ибо пред очами Господа пути человека, и Он измеряет все стези его.

22

His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

22

Беззаконного уловляют собственные беззакония его, и в узах греха своего он содержится:

23

He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

23

он умирает без наставления и от множества безумия своего теряется.
