The Peril of Adultery

My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
[a]Lend your ear to my understanding,

1

Мій сину! слухай уважно мудростї моєї і прихиляй ухо твоє до розуму мого,

2

That you may [b]preserve discretion,
And your lips may keep knowledge.

Щоб заховав собі розсудок, та щоб уста твої хоронили розум. Не слухай хитрощів женщини;

3

For the lips of [c]an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is smoother than oil;

3

Мед бо тече з уст чужої жінки, маснїйша над оливу бесїда в неї;

4

But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.

4

Та наслїдки від неї, як полин, гіркі, й гострі, як той меч обосїчний.

5

Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of [d]hell.

5

Ноги її простують до смертї, ступнї її доходять до безоднї.

6

Lest you ponder her path of life —
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.

Як би ти захотїв слїдити за стежкою життя її, то (побачиш, що) дороги її — се манівцї, й ти не розізнаєш їх.

7

Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Тим то, дїти мої, слухайте мене й не відхиляйтеся від мови з уст моїх.

8

Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,

Держи дорогу свою далеко од неї, й до дверей її домівки не наближуйсь,

9

Lest you give your [e]honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;

9

Щоб здоровля твого не оддав другій людинї й лїт твоїх мучителеві;

10

Lest aliens be filled with your [f]wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;

10

Щоб ти не годував чужих твоїм достатком, та щоб твої труда в чужий дом не переходили.

11

And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,

Навпослї ти будеш стогнати, як тїло твоє й снага твоя вичерпаєсь, —

12

And say:
“How I have hated instruction,
And my heart despised correction!

12

Та й скажеш: О, чом же я ненавидїв науку, а серце моє не зважало на впоминання;

13

I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!

Чому я не слухав голосу вчителїв моїх, не нахиляв уха мого до наставників моїх;

14

I was on the verge of total ruin,
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”

Ось я трохи що не попав у всяке зло посеред збору й громади!

15

Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.

15

Пий воду з твоєї криницї, тую, що тече з власного колодязя.

16

Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
[g]Streams of water in the streets?

Нехай джерела твої не розливаються по улицях, потоки твої по майданах;

17

Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.

17

Нехай вони тобі одному належать, а не чужим тобі.

18

Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with the wife of your youth.

18

Нехай тобі благословене буде джерело твоє, — і втїшайсь другинею молодощів твоїх,

19

As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be [h]enraptured with her love.

Мов ланею любою, мов серною красною; її груди нехай впоюють тебе по всяк час, в любощах її кохайся заєдно.

20

For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?

Про що тобі, мій сину, лакомитись на чужу, й горнутись до грудей сторонньої?

21

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He [i]ponders all his paths.

Бо в Господа людські путї перед очима; він міряє всї стежки його.

22

His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

22

Безбожника його ж безбожество вловляє, і в путах гріха свого седить він.

23

He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

23

Він умирає без науки й в безумі свойму теряєсь.
