New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • The Wiles of a Harlot

    My son, keep my words,
    And treasure my commands within you.
  • Another Warning about Immoral Women

    Follow my advice, my son;
    always treasure my commands.
  • Keep my commands and live,
    And my law as the apple of your eye.
  • Obey my commands and live!
    Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.a
  • Bind them on your fingers;
    Write them on the tablet of your heart.
  • Tie them on your fingers as a reminder.
    Write them deep within your heart.
  • Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    And call understanding your nearest kin,
  • Love wisdom like a sister;
    make insight a beloved member of your family.
  • That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
    From the seductress who flatters with her words.
  • Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman,
    from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.
  • The Crafty Harlot

    For at the window of my house
    I looked through my lattice,
  • While I was at the window of my house,
    looking through the curtain,
  • And saw among the simple,
    I perceived among the [a]youths,
    A young man devoid[b] of understanding,
  • I saw some naive young men,
    and one in particular who lacked common sense.
  • Passing along the street near her corner;
    And he took the path to her house
  • He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman,
    strolling down the path by her house.
  • In the twilight, in the evening,
    In the black and dark night.
  • It was at twilight, in the evening,
    as deep darkness fell.
  • And there a woman met him,
    With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart.
  • The woman approached him,
    seductively dressed and sly of heart.
  • She was loud and rebellious,
    Her feet would not stay at home.
  • She was the brash, rebellious type,
    never content to stay at home.
  • At times she was outside, at times in the open square,
    Lurking at every corner.
  • She is often in the streets and markets,
    soliciting at every corner.
  • So she caught him and kissed him;
    With an [c]impudent face she said to him:
  • She threw her arms around him and kissed him,
    and with a brazen look she said,
  • I have peace offerings with me;
    Today I have paid my vows.
  • “I’ve just made my peace offerings
    and fulfilled my vows.
  • So I came out to meet you,
    Diligently to seek your face,
    And I have found you.
  • You’re the one I was looking for!
    I came out to find you, and here you are!
  • I have spread my bed with tapestry,
    Colored coverings of Egyptian linen.
  • My bed is spread with beautiful blankets,
    with colored sheets of Egyptian linen.
  • I have perfumed my bed
    With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
  • I’ve perfumed my bed
    with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
  • Come, let us take our fill of love until morning;
    Let us delight ourselves with love.
  • Come, let’s drink our fill of love until morning.
    Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses,
  • For [d]my husband is not at home;
    He has gone on a long journey;
  • for my husband is not home.
    He’s away on a long trip.
  • He has taken a bag of money [e]with him,
    And will come home [f]on the appointed day.”
  • He has taken a wallet full of money with him
    and won’t return until later this month.b
  • [g]With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
    With her flattering lips she [h]seduced him.
  • So she seduced him with her pretty speech
    and enticed him with her flattery.
  • Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter,
    Or [i]as a fool to the correction of the [j]stocks,
  • He followed her at once,
    like an ox going to the slaughter.
    He was like a stag caught in a trap,c
  • Till an arrow struck his liver.
    As a bird hastens to the snare,
    He did not know it [k]would cost his life.
  • awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart.
    He was like a bird flying into a snare,
    little knowing it would cost him his life.
  • Now therefore, listen to me, my children;
    Pay attention to the words of my mouth:
  • So listen to me, my sons,
    and pay attention to my words.
  • Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways,
    Do not stray into her paths;
  • Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.
    Don’t wander down her wayward path.
  • For she has cast down many wounded,
    And all who were slain by her were strong men.
  • For she has been the ruin of many;
    many men have been her victims.
  • Her house is the way to [l]hell,
    Descending to the chambers of death.
  • Her house is the road to the grave.d
    Her bedroom is the den of death.
