The Excellence of Wisdom

Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?

Чи ж премудрість не покликує, чи розум не знїмає свій голос?

She takes her stand on the top of the [a]high hill,
Beside the way, where the paths meet.

Вона стає на високих місцях, при дорозї, та на роздорожжях;

She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:

Вона кличе коло воріт при ввіходї в місто, коло ввіходу в самі двері:

“To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.

Люде, се до вас я покликую, до синів чоловічих мій голос!

5

O you [b]simple ones, understand prudence,
And you fools, be of an understanding heart.

5

Навчайтесь, нерозумні, мудростї, і ви, глупі — розуму!

6

Listen, for I will speak of excellent things,
And from the opening of my lips will come right things;

Слухайте, бо я про важне говорити буду, й сама се правда, що уста мої виповідають.

7

For my mouth will speak truth;
Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

Бо саму правду говорить язик мій, а все, що безбожне, — гидота устам моїм.

8

All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

Всї слова уст моїх справедливі; нема в них облуду анї омани.

9

They are all plain to him who understands,
And right to those who find knowledge.

9

Всї вони ясні тому, хто має розум, і справедливі для тих, що знання набули.

10

Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold;

Прийміть мою науку над срібло раднїще, знаннє моє ви цїнуйте над золото щире;

11

For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

Мудрість бо над перли дорожша, й нїчо, що можна бажати, з нею не зрівняєсь.

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And find out knowledge and discretion.

12

Я, премудрість, пробуваю з розумом і шукаю розважливого знання.

13

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.

13

Страх Господень — значить ненавидїти зло; гордощі, високомірність, зла путь і двоязичні уста менї ненависні.

14

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, I have strength.

В мене рада й правда, я — розум, у мене сила.

15

By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.

15

Мною й царі царюють і праводавцї встановляють справедливість;

16

By me princes rule, and nobles,
All the judges of [c]the earth.

16

Мною правлять князї й вельможні, та всї суддї землї.

17

I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.

17

Люблю я тих, що мене люблять, і хто мене шукає, той знайде мене.

18

Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring riches and righteousness.

18

І богацтво й слава в мене, всї блага неминущі й справедливість;

19

My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold,
And my revenue than choice silver.

19

Плоди мої лучші золота — золота найчистїйшого, а хісна з мене більше, як із найдобірнїйшого срібла.

20

I [d]traverse the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,

20

Я ходжу шляхами правди, правосуду стежками,

21

That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth,
That I may fill their treasuries.

21

Щоб подати тим, хто мене любить, справдешнє добро, й скарбівнї їх я наповнюю.

22

“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.

22

Господь мав мене перед розпочатком путей своїх, перш нїж що сотворив, з правіків;

23

I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.

23

Од вічностї мене він помазав, від почину, перед настаннєм землї.

24

When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.

24

Я родилась, як ще не було безодень, як ще нїде джерела водою не дзюрчали.

25

Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was brought forth;

25

Родилась, як ще з землї не воздвиглись гори, перше нїж горби постали;

26

While as yet He had not made the earth or the [e]fields,
Or the [f]primal dust of the world.

26

Як іще він не сотворив нї землї, нї степу, нї грудок тих, що з них злїпивсь круг земний.

27

When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,

Як розпростирав він небо, була я там. Як він закруглював кружало безоднї,

28

When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,

Як хмари в горі згущав, як замикав джерела безоднї (надземної),

29

When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,

29

Як давав морю приказ, щоб води не переступали гряниць його, як він підвалини землї закладав, —

30

Then I was beside Him as [g]a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,

30

Тодї була я при йому строїтелькою, й була його радістю день за днем, веселячись перед ним увесь час,

31

Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.

31

Веселячись на земному крузї його, радість же моя була — дїти людські.

32

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.

32

Проте ж, дїти, слухайте мене; й благословенні ті, хто стежок моїх пильнує.

33

Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.

33

Слухайте науки, й будьте мудрі, та й не одступайте від неї.

34

Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.

34

Блажен, хто слухає мене, й невсипущо перебуває день-у-день у воріт моїх, та стоїть на сторожі під дверима в мене!

35

For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;

35

Бо хто знайшов мене, знайшов життє, й одержить ласку від Господа;

36

But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.”

36

Хто ж грішить проти мене, душі своїй той шкодить: всї, що цураються мене, люблять смерть.
