The Excellence of Wisdom

Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?

Чи ж мудрість не кличе, і не подає свого голосу розум?

She takes her stand on the top of the [a]high hill,
Beside the way, where the paths meet.

На верхі́в'ях холмі́в, при дорозі та на перехре́стях стоїть он вона!

She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:

При брамах, при вході до міста, де вхо́диться в двері, там голосно кличе вона:

“To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.

„До вас, мужі, я кличу, а мій голос до лю́дських синів:

O you [b]simple ones, understand prudence,
And you fools, be of an understanding heart.

Зрозумійте но, не́уки, мудрість, зрозумійте ви розум, безглу́зді!

Listen, for I will speak of excellent things,
And from the opening of my lips will come right things;

Послухайте, я бо шляхе́тне кажу́, і відкриття́ моїх губ — то просто́та.

7

For my mouth will speak truth;
Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

Бо правду говорять уста́ мої, а лукавство — гидо́та для губ моїх.

8

All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

Всі слова́ моїх уст справедливі, нема в них круті́йства й лука́вства.

They are all plain to him who understands,
And right to those who find knowledge.

Усі вони про́сті, хто їх розуміє, і щирі для тих, хто знахо́дить знання́.

Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold;

Візьміть ви карта́ння моє, а не срі́бло, і знання́, добірні́ше від щирого золота:

For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

ліпша бо мудрість за пе́рли, і не рівняються їй всі клейно́ди!

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And find out knowledge and discretion.

Я, мудрість, живу разом з розумом, і знахо́джу пізна́ння розва́жне.

13

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.

Страх Господній — лихе все нена́видіти: я нена́виджу пи́ху та гордість, і дорогу лиху та лукаві уста́!

14

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, I have strength.

В мене рада й огля́дність, я розум, і сила у мене.

15

By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.

15

Мною царю́ють царі, а законода́вці права́ справедливі встано́влюють.

16

By me princes rule, and nobles,
All the judges of [c]the earth.

16

Мною пра́влять владики й вельмо́жні, всі праведні су́дді.

17

I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.

17

Я кохаю всіх тих, хто кохає мене, хто ж шукає мене — мене зна́йде!

18

Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring riches and righteousness.

Зо мною багатство та слава, трива́лий маєток та правда:

19

My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold,
And my revenue than choice silver.

ліпший плід мій від щирого золота й золота чистого, а прибуток мій ліпший за срі́бло добі́рне!

20

I [d]traverse the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,

Путтю праведною я ходжу́, поміж правних стежо́к,

That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth,
That I may fill their treasuries.

щоб дати багатство в спа́дщину для тих, хто кохає мене, — і я понапо́внюю їхні скарбни́ці!

“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.

Господь мене мав на поча́тку Своєї дороги, перше чи́нів Своїх, спервові́ку, —

I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.

відвіку була я встано́влена, від поча́тку, від праві́ку землі.

24

When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.

Наро́джена я, як безо́день іще не було́, коли не було ще джере́л, водою обтя́жених.

25

Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was brought forth;

Наро́джена я, поки го́ри поставлені ще не були́, давніше за па́гірки,

While as yet He had not made the earth or the [e]fields,
Or the [f]primal dust of the world.

коли ще землі не вчинив Він, ні піль, ні початко́вого по́роху все́світу.

When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,

Коли приправля́в небеса́ — я була́ там, коли кру́га вставля́в на пове́рхні безо́дні,

When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,

When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,

Then I was beside Him as [g]a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,

Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.

Тепер же, послухайте, діти, мене, і блаже́нні, хто буде дороги мої стерегти́!

33

Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.

33

Навча́ння послухайте й мудрими станьте, і не відступайте від нього!

34

Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.

34

Блаже́нна люди́на, яка мене слухає, щоб пильнувати при две́рях моїх день-у-день, щоб одві́рки мої берегти́!

35

For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;

35

Хто бо знахо́дить мене, той знахо́дить життя, і оде́ржує милість від Господа.

36

But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.”

36

А хто́ проти мене гріши́ть, ограбо́вує душу свою; всі, хто мене ненави́дить, ті смерть покохали!“
