The Vanity of Pleasure

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth; [a]therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, this also was vanity.

Я сказал себе: «Попробую-ка повеселиться и получить от этого удовольствие». Но и это оказалось суетой.

I said of laughter — “Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?”

О смехе я сказал: «Безумие», а о веселье: «Что оно дает?»

I searched in my heart how [b]to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.

Я пытался утешить себя вином и, сохраняя мудрость, предаться глупости. Я хотел увидеть, что стоит людям делать под небом в немногие дни их жизни.

I made my works great, I built myself houses, and planted myself vineyards.

I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.

I made myself water pools from which to [c]water the growing trees of the grove.

I acquired male and female servants, and had [d]servants born in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem before me.

Купил себе рабов и рабынь, и были у меня и другие рабы, рожденные в доме моем. Также крупного и мелкого скота было у меня больше, чем у кого-либо, кто жил до меня в Иерусалиме.

I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and [e]musical instruments of all kinds.

Я собрал себе серебро, и золото, и богатство царей и областей. Приобрел я певцов, и певиц, и много наложниц4 — отраду сердца мужчин.

So I became great and [f]excelled more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

Я превзошел величием всех, кто жил в Иерусалиме до меня. При всем этом мудрость моя оставалась со мной.

Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them.
I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,
For my heart rejoiced in all my labor;
And this was my [g]reward from all my labor.

Чего бы ни пожелали глаза мои, я ни в чем им не отказывал;
сердцу своему я не отказывал в удовольствии.
Мое сердце радовалось от всего, что я делал —
это и было наградой за весь мой труд.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done
And on the labor in which I had toiled;
And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind.
There was no profit under the sun.

и на тот труд, что я совершил,
я увидел, что все суета, все — погоня за ветром,
и ни в чем нет пользы под солнцем.

The End of the Wise and the Fool

Then I turned myself to consider wisdom and madness and folly;
For what can the man do who succeeds the king? —
Only what he has already done.

Затем я стал размышлять о мудрости,
о безумии и глупости.
Ведь что еще может сделать преемник царя,
кроме того, что уже делалось?

Then I saw that wisdom excels folly
As light excels darkness.

И увидел я, что мудрость лучше глупости,
как и свет лучше тьмы.

The wise man’s eyes are in his head,
But the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I myself perceived
That the same event happens to them all.

Мудрый ясно видит куда идет,
а глупый блуждает во тьме.
Но я понял,
что их обоих ждет одна участь.

So I said in my heart,
“As it happens to the fool,
It also happens to me,
And why was I then more wise?”
Then I said in my heart,
“This also is vanity.”

Затем я сказал себе:

«Участь глупого постигнет и меня,
так к чему же мне моя мудрость?»
И я сказал себе,
что и это суета.

For there is no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever,
Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come.
And how does a wise man die?
As the fool!

Потому что мудрого, также как и глупого,
не будут помнить вечно;
придет время — забудут обоих.
Мудрый умирает, как и глупый!

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

И возненавидел я жизнь, потому что печальным показался мне всякий труд, который делается под солнцем. Все — суета, все — погоня за ветром.

Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

Я возненавидел все, ради чего трудился под солнцем, потому что все это я должен оставить тому, кто придет после меня.

19

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

И кто знает, будет ли он мудрым или глупым? А ведь он будет управлять всем, что я приобрел под солнцем тяжелым трудом и мудростью. И это тоже суета.

Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun.

И сердце мое впало в отчаяние от всего труда, который я делал под солнцем,

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his [h]heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

потому что человек может трудиться с мудростью, знанием и умением, а затем должен оставить все тому, кто палец о палец не ударил. И это — суета, это — большая несправедливость.

For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun?

Что приобретает человек от всего своего труда и переживаний под солнцем?

For all his days are sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

Все дни труда его — боль и скорбь, и даже ночью разум его не знает покоя. Это тоже суета.

Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.

Нет ничего лучше для человека, чем есть, пить и находить наслаждение в труде. Я понял, что и это дает рука Божья,

For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, [i]more than I?

ведь кто без Него может есть и наслаждаться?

For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Человеку, который угоден Ему, Он дает мудрость, знание и счастье, а грешнику — бремя: собирать и копить богатство, чтобы передать его тому, кто угоден Богу. И это — суета, это — погоня за ветром.
