The Uselessness of Selfish Toil

Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun:
And look! The tears of the oppressed,
But they have no comforter —
[a]On the side of their oppressors there is power,
But they have no comforter.

І знов побачив я всі утиски, що кояться під сонцем: пригноблені в сльозах, а утішителя немає; від рук гнобителів — насильство, а втішника немає.

Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.

І проголосив я мертвих, що вже вмерли, щасливішими від живих, які ще живуть,

Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

а ще ліпшим від одних і других того, який ще не жив, тож не бачив лихих діл, що діються під сонцем.

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Помітив я також, що всякий труд, що всяка в ділах спритність — то тільки обопільна заздрість: це теж лиш марнота й гонитва за вітром.

The fool folds his hands
And consumes his own flesh.

Дурний складає руки і їсть власне тіло.

Better a handful with quietness
Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.

Ліпша повна жменя спокою, аніж дві пригорщі повні труду та гонитви за вітром.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:

Бачив я ще й іншу марноту під сонцем.

There is one alone, without [b]companion:
He has neither son nor brother.
Yet there is no end to all his labors,
Nor is his eye satisfied with riches.
But he never asks,
“For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?”
This also is vanity and a [c]grave misfortune.

Людина собі самотня, нікого другого не має; ні сина в неї, ані брата, а праці її нема краю, очі її не насичуються багатством. Для кого я працюю та позбавляю себе щастя? Це теж лиш марнота й лихий клопіт.

The Value of a Friend

Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.

Двом ліпше, ніж одному, вони бо мають ліпшу користь із своєї праці.

For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.

Бо як упадуть, один одного підніме. Горе ж одному, як упаде, і нема нікого, щоб його підвести.

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?

Так само, як лежать удвох — їм тепло; одному ж як загрітись?

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Popularity Passes Away

Better a poor and wise youth
Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.

Ліпший юнак убогий та розумний, ніж цар старий та дурний, що вже не годен слухати поради;

For he comes out of prison to be king,
Although [d]he was born poor in his kingdom.

він бо із тюрми виходить царювати, дарма що в його царстві народивсь убогим.

I saw all the living who walk under the sun;
They were with the second youth who stands in his place.

Бачив я всіх живих, що під сонцем ходять, як вони коло юнака, коло другого, товпляться, що мав на його місце стати.

16

There was no end of all the people [e]over whom he was made king;
Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him.
Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Безліч було народу, усіх тих, котрим він перед вів; та ті, що прийдуть потім, не будуть ним раді. Це теж марнота й гонитва за вітром.
