The Uselessness of Selfish Toil

Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun:
And look! The tears of the oppressed,
But they have no comforter —
[a]On the side of their oppressors there is power,
But they have no comforter.

І знов я побачив всі у́тиски, що чинились під сонцем, — і сльоза́ ось ути́скуваних, та немає для них потіши́теля, і наси́лля з руки, що їх гно́блять, і немає для них потіши́теля.

Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.

І я похвалив тих померлих, що давно повмирали, більш від живих, що живуть дотепе́р.

Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

А краще від них від обох тій люди́ні, що досі іще не була́, що не бачила чину лихого, що робився під сонцем!

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

І я бачив ввесь труд та ввесь у́спіх учи́нку, виклика́є заздрість одно́го до о́дного, — і це все марно́та та ло́влення вітру!..

The fool folds his hands
And consumes his own flesh.

Нерозумний сидить, склавши руки свої, та жере́ своє тіло, —

Better a handful with quietness
Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.

краща повна долоня споко́ю за повні дві жмені кло́поту та за ло́влення вітру!

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:

І зно́ву я бачив марно́ту під сонцем:

There is one alone, without [b]companion:
He has neither son nor brother.
Yet there is no end to all his labors,
Nor is his eye satisfied with riches.
But he never asks,
“For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?”
This also is vanity and a [c]grave misfortune.

Буває само́тній, і не має ніко́го він іншого, сина чи брата у ньо́го нема, та немає кінця всьому зуси́ллю його, і не наси́титься око багатством його, і він не пові́сть: „Та для кого дба́ю і позбавляю добра свою душу?“ Марно́та й оце, і даремна робота воно.

The Value of a Friend

Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.

Краще двом, як одному, бо мають хорошу заплату за труд свій,

For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.

і якби вони впали, піді́йме одне́ свого друга! Та горе одно́му, як він упаде́, й нема дру́гого, щоб підве́сти його.

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?

Також коли вдвох покладу́ться, то тепло їм буде, а я́к же зогрі́тись одно́му?

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

А коли б хто напав на одно́го, то вдвох вони стануть на нього, — і нитка потрійна не скоро пірве́ться!

Popularity Passes Away

Better a poor and wise youth
Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.

Ліпший убогий та мудрий юна́к, аніж цар стари́й та нерозумний, що вже осторо́г не приймає,

For he comes out of prison to be king,
Although [d]he was born poor in his kingdom.

бо виходить юнак і з в'язни́ці, щоб зацарюва́ти, хоч у царстві своїм народивсь він убогим!

15

I saw all the living who walk under the sun;
They were with the second youth who stands in his place.

15

Я бачив усіх живих, що ходять під сонцем, на боці цього́ юнака́, — цього дру́гого, що став він на місце його.

16

There was no end of all the people [e]over whom he was made king;
Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him.
Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Немає кінця всьому лю́дові, всьо́му, що був перед ним, та й насту́пні не втішаться ним, — бо й це теж марно́та та ло́влення вітру!
