Fear God, Keep Your Vows

Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

1

Не поспішай твоїми устами, і нехай твоє серце не поспішає винести слово перед обличчям Бога. Адже Бог на небі, а ти — на землі, на цьому стали твої нечисленні слова.

2

Do not be rash with your mouth,
And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
Therefore let your words be few.

Бо в безлічі плутанини приходить сон і голос безумного в багатьох словах.

3

For a dream comes through much activity,
And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

Як тільки ти помолився до Бога молитвою, не забарися її виконати. Бо Він не милується в безумних, ти віддай те, що пообіцяв у молитві.

4

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
For He has no pleasure in fools.
Pay what you have vowed —

Краще тобі не молитися, ніж тобі помолитися, і не віддати.

Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

5

Не дай твоїх уст, щоби згрішило твоє тіло, і не скажеш перед Божим обличчям: Це з незнання, щоби Бог не розлютився на твій голос і не знищив творіння твоїх рук.

6

Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your [a]excuse and destroy the work of your hands?

Бо у великій кількості снів та безумності й слова численні. Отже, бійся Бога!

7

For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

Коли в країні бачиш обмову бідного, обкрадання суду і праведності, не дивуйся ділом. Адже Всевишній стереже над високим, і високі — над ними.

The Vanity of Gain and Honor

If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent [b]perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

І надвишки землі є для всіх, цар обробленого поля.

9

Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.

Хто любить срібло, не насититься сріблом. І хто сильно полюбив їхні плоди? Це ж марнота!

10

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
This also is vanity.

Безліччю доброти наповнилися ті, що його їдять. І яка чеснота в того, що має, хіба щоби дивитися на нього очима?

11

When goods increase,
They increase who eat them;
So what profit have the owners
Except to see them with their eyes?

Сон солодкий у раба, чи мало або чи багато їсть. А хто наситився багатінням, не має того, хто дозволив би йому спати.

12

The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
Whether he eats little or much;
But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.

Є недуга, яку я побачив під сонцем, багатство, бережене при власникові на його зло,

13

There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun:
Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.

і те багатство загине в поганій плутанині, і він породив сина, і немає нічого в його руці.

14

But those riches perish through [c]misfortune;
When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

Як і вийшов він нагий із лона своєї матері, так він і повернеться, аби піти, як і прийшов, і нічого не забере за свій труд, щоби пішло в його руці.

15

As he came from his mother’s womb, naked shall he return,
To go as he came;
And he shall take nothing from his labor
Which he may carry away in his hand.

І це погана недуга. Адже так, як прийшов, так і відійде, і яка користь йому, для чого трудиться на вітер?

16

And this also is a severe evil —
Just exactly as he came, so shall he go.
And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?

І всі його дні — в темряві, плачу, великому гніві, недузі та розлюченості.

17

All his days he also eats in darkness,
And he has much sorrow and sickness and anger.

Ось що доброго я побачив, що є приємне: їсти, пити і бачити добро в усякій своїй праці, якою трудиться під сонцем за числом днів його життя, які дав йому Бог. Адже це — його частка.

18

Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his [d]heritage.

І всяка людина, якій Бог дав багатство, маєтки і владу, Він дав їй їсти з нього, брати його частку і веселитися у своєму труді, це — Божий дар.

19

As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his [e]heritage and rejoice in his labor — this is the gift of God.

- Адже не багато пам’ятатимуть дні свого життя, тому що Бог дає клопіт йому у веселості його серця.
