New King James Version

English Standard Version

  • A Prayer in Deep Distress

    Woe to you who plunder, though you have not been plundered;
    And you who deal treacherously, though they have not dealt treacherously with you!
    When you cease plundering,
    You will be plundered;
    When you make an end of dealing treacherously,
    They will deal treacherously with you.
  • O Lord, Be Gracious to Us

    Ah, you destroyer,
    who yourself have not been destroyed,
    you traitor,
    whom none has betrayed!
    When you have ceased to destroy,
    you will be destroyed;
    and when you have finished betraying,
    they will betray you.
  • O Lord, be gracious to us;
    We have waited for You.
    Be [a]their arm every morning,
    Our salvation also in the time of trouble.
  • O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you.
    Be our arm every morning,
    our salvation in the time of trouble.
  • At the noise of the tumult the people shall flee;
    When You lift Yourself up, the nations shall be scattered;
  • At the tumultuous noise peoples flee;
    when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered,
  • And Your plunder shall be gathered
    Like the gathering of the caterpillar;
    As the running to and fro of locusts,
    He shall run upon them.
  • and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
    as locusts leap, it is leapt upon.
  • The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high;
    He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
  • The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high;
    he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness,
  • Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times,
    And the strength of salvation;
    The fear of the Lord is His treasure.
  • and he will be the stability of your times,
    abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
    the fear of the Lord is Zion’sa treasure.
  • Surely their valiant ones shall cry outside,
    The ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.
  • Behold, their heroes cry in the streets;
    the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
  • The highways lie waste,
    The traveling man ceases.
    He has broken the covenant,
    [b]He has despised the [c]cities,
    He regards no man.
  • The highways lie waste;
    the traveler ceases.
    Covenants are broken;
    citiesb are despised;
    there is no regard for man.
  • The earth mourns and languishes,
    Lebanon is shamed and shriveled;
    Sharon is like a wilderness,
    And Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.
  • The land mourns and languishes;
    Lebanon is confounded and withers away;
    Sharon is like a desert,
    and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.
  • Impending Judgment on Zion

    “Now I will rise,” says the Lord;
    “Now I will be exalted,
    Now I will lift Myself up.
  • “Now I will arise,” says the Lord,
    “now I will lift myself up;
    now I will be exalted.
  • You shall conceive chaff,
    You shall bring forth stubble;
    Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
  • You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble;
    your breath is a fire that will consume you.
  • And the people shall be like the burnings of lime;
    Like thorns cut up they shall be burned in the fire.
  • And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,
    like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.”
  • Hear, you who are afar off, what I have done;
    And you who are near, acknowledge My might.”
  • Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
    and you who are near, acknowledge my might.
  • The sinners in Zion are afraid;
    Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:
    “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?
    Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
  • The sinners in Zion are afraid;
    trembling has seized the godless:
    “Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire?
    Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”
  • He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
    He who despises the gain of oppressions,
    Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
    Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
    And shuts his eyes from seeing evil:
  • He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
    who despises the gain of oppressions,
    who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe,
    who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed
    and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,
  • He will dwell on [d]high;
    His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;
    Bread will be given him,
    His water will be sure.
  • he will dwell on the heights;
    his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks;
    his bread will be given him; his water will be sure.
  • The Land of the Majestic King

    Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;
    They will see the land that is very far off.
  • Your eyes will behold the king in his beauty;
    they will see a land that stretches afar.
  • Your heart will meditate on terror:
    “Where is the scribe?
    Where is he who weighs?
    Where is he who counts the towers?”
  • Your heart will muse on the terror:
    “Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed the tribute?
    Where is he who counted the towers?”
  • You will not see a fierce people,
    A people of obscure speech, beyond perception,
    Of a [e]stammering tongue that you cannot understand.
  • You will see no more the insolent people,
    the people of an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,
    stammering in a tongue that you cannot understand.
  • Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
    Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a quiet home,
    A tabernacle that will not be taken down;
    Not one of its stakes will ever be removed,
    Nor will any of its cords be broken.
  • Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts!
    Your eyes will see Jerusalem,
    an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent,
    whose stakes will never be plucked up,
    nor will any of its cords be broken.
  • But there the majestic Lord will be for us
    A place of broad rivers and streams,
    In which no [f]galley with oars will sail,
    Nor majestic ships pass by
  • But there the Lord in majesty will be for us
    a place of broad rivers and streams,
    where no galley with oars can go,
    nor majestic ship can pass.
  • (For the Lord is our Judge,
    The Lord is our Lawgiver,
    The Lord is our King;
    He will save us);
  • For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver;
    the Lord is our king; he will save us.
  • Your tackle is loosed,
    They could not strengthen their mast,
    They could not spread the sail.
    Then the prey of great plunder is divided;
    The lame take the prey.
  • Your cords hang loose;
    they cannot hold the mast firm in its place
    or keep the sail spread out.
    Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided;
    even the lame will take the prey.
  • And the inhabitant will not say, “I am sick”;
    The people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity.
  • And no inhabitant will say, “I am sick”;
    the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.
