Symbol of the Linen Sash

Thus the Lord said to me: “Go and get yourself a linen sash, and put it [a]around your waist, but do not put it in water.”

Так сказав менї Господь: Ійди, купи собі льняного пояса й підпережи ним чересла твої, та в воду не клади його.

2

So I got a [b]sash according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist.

2

І купив я пояс, як заповідав Господь, і підперезав стан мій.

3

And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying,

Тодї надійшло до мене слово Господнє вдруге, й сказано так:

4

“Take the [c]sash that you acquired, which is [d]around your waist, and arise, go to the [e]Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole in the rock.”

Возьми пояса, що купив його, та що на череслах твоїх, подайся на Евфрат та й сховай його там в щілинї в скелї.

5

So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.

І пійшов я та й сховав його на Евфратї, як заповідав Господь.

6

Now it came to pass after many days that the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the sash which I commanded you to hide there.”

Як же вплило немало часу, сказав до мене Господь: Пійди на Евфрат і возьми звідти пояса, що я заповідав тобі сховати там.

7

Then I went to the Euphrates and dug, and I took the [f]sash from the place where I had hidden it; and there was the sash, ruined. It was profitable for nothing.

І пійшов я на Евфрат, викопав і взяв пояс із того місця, де сховав, і ось, дивись — пояс з'огнив і став нїдочого.

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

І надійшло до мене слово Господнє таке:

9

“Thus says the Lord: ‘In this manner I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.

9

Так говорить Господь: Оттак ізнївечу я гординю Юдину й велику гординю Ерусалимову.

10

This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who follow[g] the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing.

Сї негідні люде, що нехтують слухати слова мого, що ходять своєю волею по своїй дорозї слїдом за иншими богами, щоб їм служити й перед ними ниць припадати, вони стануть такими, як сей пояс, нїдочого не придатен.

11

For as the sash clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me,’ says the Lord, ‘that they may become My people, for renown, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.’

Бо, як пояс прилягає до чересел чоловікові, так я пригорнув був до себе ввесь дом Ізраїля і ввесь дом Юдин, говорить Господь, щоб вони були моїми людьми й славою моєю й хвалою та окрасою моєю; та не послухали вони.

Symbol of the Wine Bottles

“Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Every bottle shall be filled with wine.” ’
“And they will say to you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every bottle will be filled with wine?’

Оце ж промов до них се слово: Так говорить Господь, Бог Ізрайлїв: Усякий скіряний міх сповнюють вином. Коли ж тобі відкажуть: Хиба ж ми не знаємо, що всяку кінву та сповняють вином?

13

“Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land — even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem — with drunkenness!

Тодї скажи їм: Так говорить Господь: Ось я сповню аж до перепою вином усїх осадників сієї землї й царів, що, яко наслїдники Давидові, седять на престолах, і сьвященників і пророків та й усїх осадників Ерусалимських,

14

And I will dash them [h]one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,” says the Lord. “I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy, but will destroy them.” ’ ”

І порозбиваю одного об одного, отцїв і синів укупі, говорить Господь, — нїякої пільги нї милосердя не буде їм, і не пожалую вигубити їх.

15

Pride Precedes Captivity

Hear and give ear:
Do not be proud,
For the Lord has spoken.

15

Оце ж слухайте й уважайте, не несїтесь гордо, бо се Господь говорить.

16

Give glory to the Lord your God
Before He causes darkness,
And before your feet stumble
On the dark mountains,
And while you are looking for light,
He turns it into the shadow of death
And makes it dense darkness.

16

Оддайте славу Господеві, Богу вашому, доки ще не навів темряви й докіль іще ноги ваші не спотикаються по горах в памороцї.

17

But if you will not hear it,
My soul will weep in secret for your pride;
My eyes will weep bitterly
And run down with tears,
Because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.

Коли ж сього не послухаєте, то душа моя буде по безлюдних місцях оплакувати гординю вашу; гірко плакати ме, очі мої будуть розпливатись в сльозах, бо займуть у полонь стадо Господнє.

18

Say to the king and to the queen mother,
“Humble yourselves;
Sit down,
For your rule shall collapse, the crown of your glory.”

Промов до царя й до царицї: Впокорітеся, сядьте низько, бо впаде з вашої голови вінець вашої слави.

19

The cities of the South shall be shut up,
And no one shall open them;
Judah shall be carried away captive, all of it;
It shall be wholly carried away captive.

19

Міста полуденньої країни позачинюються й нїкому їх відчиняти; одведуть усього Юду в полонь, одведуть у неволю що до одного.

20

Lift up your eyes and see
Those who come from the north.
Where is the flock that was given to you,
Your beautiful sheep?

20

Здійміте ваші очі й подивітесь на тих, що йдуть із півночі: де стадо, що тобі (Сионе) було віддане — те пишне стадо твоє?

21

What will you say when He punishes you?
For you have taught them
To be chieftains, to be head over you.
Will not pangs seize you,
Like a woman in [i]labor?

21

Що скажеш, дочко Сионова, як Бог навідаєсь до тебе? Ти ж сама принадила їх до себе, щоб старшували над тобою; чи не схоплять же болестї тебе, як породїлю?

22

And if you say in your heart,
“Why have these things come upon me?”
For the greatness of your iniquity
Your skirts have been uncovered,
Your heels [j]made bare.

І коли скажеш у серцї твойму: "За що менї таке судилось?" так знай, що се за велику беззаконність твою піднято спідницю твою, та обнажено ноги твої.

23

Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots?
Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.

Хиба Мурин зможе перемінити скіру свою, або пард — пятна свої? так і ви — чи зможете чинити добре, звикши ледаче робити?

24

“Therefore I will scatter them like stubble
That passes away by the wind of the wilderness.

24

Тим то я порозвіваю їх, мов порох, розвіваний пустиннїм вітром.

25

This is your lot,
The portion of your measures from Me,” says the Lord,
“Because you have forgotten Me
And trusted in falsehood.

25

Оце ж пай твій, дїлениця твоя від мене, говорить Господь, за те, що забула мене єси та й знадїялась на лож.

26

Therefore I will uncover your skirts over your face,
That your shame may appear.

26

За се підіймуть спідницю твою аж на лице тобі, щоб виден був сором твій.

27

I have seen your adulteries
And your lustful neighings,
The lewdness of your harlotry,
Your abominations on the hills in the fields.
Woe to you, O Jerusalem!
Will you still not be made clean?”

27

Бачив я перелюбки твої й гидкі бажання твої, твій розпуст без сорома, по горбах у полі. Горе тобі, Ерусалиме! ти не очистишся й потім. Докіль же сього буде?
