Jerusalem in Affliction

How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces
Has become a [a]slave!

1

Як ся столиця седить одинока, — та, що була колись така многолюдна, стала, мов би вдовою; город, великий між народами, князь над краями, — платить нинї дань!

2

She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.

Плаче гірко по ночах, сльози ллються по щоках; з усїх, що його любили, нема нїкого, хто б розважив; усї приятелї його зрадили його, стали ворогами.

3

Judah has gone into captivity,
Under affliction and hard servitude;
She dwells among the [b]nations,
She finds no rest;
All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits.

Юда, втїкаючи від злиднїв та неволї тяжкої, поселився серед поган, та не знайшов впокою; всї, що його з давна гонили, спіймали його, наче б у тїсному заулку.

The roads to Zion mourn
Because no one comes to the [c]set feasts.
All her gates are desolate;
Her priests sigh,
Her virgins are afflicted,
And she is in bitterness.

Посуміли дороги на Сион, бо перестали прочане ходити; всї брами його опустїли; сьвященники взітхають, дївчата горюють, — гірко й йому самому.

5

Her adversaries have become [d]the master,
Her enemies prosper;
For the Lord has afflicted her
Because of the multitude of her transgressions.
Her children have gone into captivity before the enemy.

Вороги його взяли гору над ним; противники роскошують, бо Господь послав на його злиднї за премногі його провини; дїти його пійшли в неволю поперед ворога чамбулом.

And from the daughter of Zion
All her splendor has departed.
Her princes have become like deer
That find no pasture,
That [e]flee without strength
Before the pursuer.

Минулась у Сиону вся його величність; знатні в його — наче ті оленї, що не знаходять собі нїде паші; безсильні, пійшли навперід погоничів своїх.

7

In the days of her affliction and roaming,
Jerusalem remembers all her pleasant things
That she had in the days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of the enemy,
With no one to help her,
The adversaries saw her
And mocked at her [f]downfall.

В злиднях своїх та в тїснотї своїй спогадав Ерусалим про всї дорогі добра свої, що їх мав тодї, як нарід його попав в руки ворожі, й нї в кого не знайшов підмоги; а вороги позирають на його та висьмівають і його суботи.

8

Jerusalem has sinned gravely,
Therefore she has become [g]vile.
All who honored her despise her
Because they have seen her nakedness;
Yes, she sighs and turns away.

Тяжко провинив Ерусалим, тим і зробився огидою людям; всї, що його славили, споглядають на його з погордою, бо побачили наготу його, а й сам він взітхає, та й одвертає, застидавшись, обличчє.

9

Her uncleanness is in her skirts;
She did not consider her destiny;
Therefore her collapse was awesome;
She had no comforter.
“O Lord, behold my affliction,
For the enemy is exalted!”

Гріх його, мов нечистота на платтї, явний, та він не подумав, що з того буде; тим то й упав він так низько, та й не має потїшителя. Зглянься ж ти, Боже, на мене у злиднях, бо ворог аж надто піднявся вгору!

10

The adversary has spread his hand
Over all her [h]pleasant things;
For she has seen the nations enter her [i]sanctuary,
Those whom You commanded
Not to enter Your assembly.

Ворог простяг руку свою на все, що йому дороге було; він бачить, як погане втискаються в пресьвяте місце його; а ти ж (Господи,) заповідав, щоб вони не вступали в громаду твою.

11

All her people sigh,
They [j]seek bread;
They have given their [k]valuables for food to restore life.
“See, O Lord, and consider,
For I am scorned.”

Ввесь нарід взітхає за насущним хлїбом, віддає все дороге, щоб було чим посилити душу. О, зглянься, Господи, подивись, як я принижений.

12

“Is it nothing to you, all you who [l]pass by?
Behold and see
If there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
Which has been brought on me,
Which the Lord has inflicted
In the day of His fierce anger.

О, нехай вас нїколи таке не спіткає, всї ви, що дорогою проходите мимо! Гляньте, придивіться, чи є біль такий, як мій біль, що на мене впав, що послав на мене Господь в день палаючого гнїву свого?

13

“From above He has sent fire into my bones,
And it overpowered them;
He has spread a net for my feet
And turned me back;
He has made me desolate
And faint all the day.

Звисока послав він огонь у костї мої і той обгорнув їх; він розстелив сїтї під ноги менї й повалив мене; учинив мене бідним, та мучить мене день поза день.

14

“The yoke of my transgressions was [m]bound;
They were woven together by His hands,
And thrust upon my neck.
He made my strength fail;
The Lord delivered me into the hands of those whom I am not able to withstand.

Ярмо, зроблене з проступків моїх, в руцї в него; вони, неначе в шнур поскручувані, і заложені менї на шию; Господь обезсилив мене; віддав мене в руки, що з них годї менї добутись.

15

“The Lord has trampled underfoot all my mighty men in my midst;
He has called an assembly against me
To crush my young men;
The Lord trampled as in a winepress
The virgin daughter of Judah.

Всїх хоробрих моїх повалив Господь посеред мене; скликав проти мене цїлу товпу, щоб вигубити молодиків моїх; неначе (грони) в тискарнї, зтоптав Господь дївицю-дочку Юдину.

16

“For these things I weep;
My eye, my eye overflows with water;
Because the comforter, who should restore my life,
Is far from me.
My children are desolate
Because the enemy prevailed.”

От чого я плачу; око моє, — от чого око моє проливає води; далеко від мене втїшитель, що живив би духа в менї; дїти мої витрачені, бо ворог взяв гору.

17

Zion [n]spreads out her hands,
But no one comforts her;
The Lord has commanded concerning Jacob
That those around him become his adversaries;
Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.

17

Сион простягає руки свої та нема, хто б його розважив. Господь дав приказ проти Якова ворогам його, щоб його кругом обступили; Ерусалим стався гидотою посеред них.

18

“The Lord is righteous,
For I rebelled against His [o]commandment.
Hear now, all peoples,
And behold my sorrow;
My virgins and my young men
Have gone into captivity.

18

Справедливий Господь, бо я не корився його слову. О, слухайте, всї народи, погляньте на муку мою; дїви мої й молодики мої — всї вони пійшли в неволю!

19

“I called for my lovers,
But they deceived me;
My priests and my elders
Breathed their last in the city,
While they sought food
To restore their life.

19

Кличу другів моїх, та вони завели мене; сьвященники мої й старшина моя гинуть у містї, шукаючи харчі собі, щоб підкріпитись, свою душу (задержати в тїлї).

20

“See, O Lord, that I am in distress;
My soul[p] is troubled;
My heart is overturned within me,
For I have been very rebellious.
Outside the sword bereaves,
At home it is like death.

Зглянься, Господи, бо я в тїснечі; внутро моє неспокійне, серце, неначе перевернулось у менї; я бо упрямо противився тобі; в полі забрав меч дїти мої, а дома — (голодова) смерть.

21

“They have heard that I sigh,
But no one comforts me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble;
They are glad that You have done it.
Bring on the day You have [q]announced,
That they may become like me.

Почули, що я стогну, а нема, хто б мене розважив; почули всї вороги мої про мою недолю, та й утїшились, що ти се вчинив менї. О, коли б ти послав уже той день, що його заповів, і вони стали такими ж, як я!

22

“Let all their wickedness come before You,
And do to them as You have done to me
For all my transgressions;
For my sighs are many,
And my heart is faint.”

О, постав перед лице своє усе зло їх; обійдись із ними оттак, як обійшовся зо мною за всї гріхи мої, я бо стогну безнастанно, й серце в менї завмірає!
