The Degradation of Zion

How the gold has become dim!
How changed the fine gold!
The stones of the sanctuary are [a]scattered
At the head of every street.

Як поте́мніло золото, як відмінилося щире те золото добре, як на ро́зі всіх вулиць камі́ння святе порозки́дане!

2

The precious sons of Zion,
[b]Valuable as fine gold,
How they are [c]regarded as clay pots,
The work of the hands of the potter!

Кошто́вні сіонські сини, щирим золотом важені, як тепер ось за гли́няний по́суд полі́чені, за чин рук ганча́рських!

3

Even the jackals present their breasts
To nurse their young;
But the daughter of my people is cruel,
Like ostriches in the wilderness.

3

На́віть шакали витя́гують пе́рса, годують своїх молодя́т, а до́ня народу мого жорсто́ка, мов струсі в пустині:

The tongue of the infant clings
To the roof of its mouth for thirst;
The young children ask for bread,
But no one breaks it for them.

язик сосунця́ до його піднебі́ння від спра́ги прилип. Хліба жадають собі немовля́та, — й немає ніко́го, хто б їм відломи́в.

Those who ate delicacies
Are desolate in the streets;
Those who were brought up in scarlet
Embrace ash heaps.

Ті, що їли присма́ки, — на вулицях з голоду мліють; ті, що ви́плекані на пурпу́рі, — тепер смітники́ обійма́ють.

The punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people
Is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom,
Which was overthrown in a moment,
With no hand to help her!

І більшою стала вина доньки люду мого́ за про́гріх Содо́му, що був переве́рнений вмить, — і не торка́лися руки до нього.

7

Her [d]Nazirites were [e]brighter than snow
And whiter than milk;
They were more ruddy in body than rubies,
Like sapphire in their [f]appearance.

Її можновла́дці чистіші від снігу були́, біліші від молока, їхнє тіло червоне, мов пе́рли, їхній вигляд — сапфі́р, —

Now their appearance is blacker than soot;
They go unrecognized in the streets;
Their skin clings to their bones,
It has become as dry as wood.

а тепер їхній вигляд чорніший за са́жу, не розпізнаю́ть їх на вулицях, їхня шкіра стягнулась на їхній кості́, зробилась сухою, як дерево.

Those slain by the sword are better off
Than those who die of hunger;
For these pine away,
Stricken for lack of the fruits of the field.

Забитим мечем стало ліпше, ніж повби́ваним голодом, що гинуть проко́лені, за браком плоді́в польови́х.

The hands of the compassionate women
Have [g]cooked their own children;
They became food for them
In the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Руки жінок милосе́рдних варили своїх діточо́к, які стали пожи́вою їм під час руйнува́ння дочки́ мого лю́ду.

11

The Lord has fulfilled His fury,
He has poured out His fierce anger.
He kindled a fire in Zion,
And it has devoured its foundations.

Закінчи́в Господь лю́тість Свою, вилив жар Свого гніву, — і запали́в на Сіоні огонь, і поже́р він осно́ви його́!

12

The kings of the earth,
And all inhabitants of the world,
Would not have believed
That the adversary and the enemy
Could enter the gates of Jerusalem —

Не вірили зе́мні царі та всі ме́шканці ці́лого світу, що вві́йде противник та ворог до брам Єрусалиму.

13

Because of the sins of her prophets
And the iniquities of her priests,
Who shed in her midst
The blood of the just.

13

Усе ста́лося це за провини пророків його́, за неправду свяще́нства його, що кров праведників серед нього лили́.

14

They wandered blind in the streets;
They have defiled themselves with blood,
So that no one would touch their garments.

По вулицях бродять, немов ті сліпці́, поплямо́вані кров'ю, так що люди не можуть діткну́тись до о́дягу їхнього.

15

They cried out to them,
“Go away, unclean!
Go away, go away,
Do not touch us!”
When they fled and wandered,
Those among the nations said,
“They shall no longer dwell here.”

„Уступі́ться, нечисті!“ кричали до них, „уступі́ться, збо́чуйте, не дото́ркуйтеся!“ І повтікали вони й мандрува́ли, і казали між лю́дьми: „Ме́шкати в нас більш не бу́дуть!“

16

The [h]face of the Lord scattered them;
He no longer regards them.
The people do not respect the priests
Nor show favor to the elders.

16

Господнє лице розпоро́шило їх, не ди́виться більше на них, — бо вони не зверта́ли уваги на обли́ччя священиків, до стари́х вони ласки не мали.

17

Still our eyes failed us,
Watching vainly for our help;
In our watching we watched
For a nation that could not save us.

17

Уже прогляділи ми очі свої, даре́мно чека́вши на поміч собі, — на варті своїй ми чекали наро́ду, який нас не спас.

18

They [i]tracked our steps
So that we could not walk in our streets.
Our end was near;
Our days were over,
For our end had come.

18

Чатують вони наші кро́ки, щоб ходи́ти не могли ми по пло́щах своїх. Кінець наш набли́зився, спо́внилися наші дні, бо прийшов нам кінець.

19

Our pursuers were swifter
Than the eagles of the heavens.
They pursued us on the mountains
And lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

Гноби́телі наші скоріші були за орлів піднебе́сних, — вони уганя́лись за нами по го́рах, на нас чатува́ли в пустині.

20

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord,
Was caught in their pits,
Of whom we said, “Under his shadow
We shall live among the nations.”

Попав в ями живу́щий наш Дух, Господній пома́занець, що ми говорили про ньо́го: „Ми бу́демо жити в тіні́ його серед наро́дів“.

21

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
You who dwell in the land of Uz!
The cup shall also pass over to you
And you shall become drunk and make yourself naked.

21

Веселися та тішся, о до́чко Едому, що сидиш в краю Уц, — також над тобою пере́йде злий ке́ліх, уп'єшся й ого́лишся й ти!

22

The punishment of your iniquity [j]is accomplished,
O daughter of Zion;
He will no longer send you into captivity.
He will punish your iniquity,
O daughter of Edom;
He will uncover your sins!

Скінчи́лася кара твоя, до́чко Сіону, — не буде Він більше тебе виганяти, — та твоє беззако́ння скарає Він, до́чко Едому, відкриє провини твої!
