    Symbol of the Cooking Pot

    Again, in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

    “Son of man, write down the name of the day, this very day — the king of Babylon started his siege against Jerusalem this very day.

    — Сын человеческий, запиши этот день, сегодняшний день, потому что царь Вавилона в этот день осадил Иерусалим.

    And utter a parable to the rebellious house, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God:
    “Put on a pot, set it on,
    And also pour water into it.

    Поведай этому мятежному дому притчу. Скажи им: «Так говорит Владыка Господь:

    Поставь котел; поставь
    и налей воды.

    Gather pieces of meat in it,
    Every good piece,
    The thigh and the shoulder.
    Fill it with choice [a]cuts;

    Брось в него мясо, хорошее мясо —
    окорок и лопатку, —
    и наполни лучшими из костей.

    Take the choice of the flock.
    Also pile fuel bones under it,
    Make it boil well,
    And let the cuts simmer in it.”

    Возьми отборных овец;
    разложи под котлом кости75;
    пусть он кипит,
    и пусть в нем сварятся кости.

    ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God:
    “Woe to the bloody city,
    To the pot whose scum is in it,
    And whose scum is not gone from it!
    Bring it out piece by piece,
    On which no lot has fallen.

    Ведь так говорит Владыка Господь:

    — Горе кровавому городу,
    котлу проржавевшему,
    чья ржавчина не отчистилась!
    Опустошите его,
    кусок за куском из него выбрасывая,
    не выбирая по жребию.

    For her blood is in her midst;
    She set it on top of a rock;
    She did not pour it on the ground,
    To cover it with dust.

    Жители его пролили кровь — у всех на виду;
    они пролили ее на голой скале,
    не пролили ее на землю,
    где ее покрыла бы пыль.

    That it may raise up fury and take vengeance,
    I have set her blood on top of a rock,
    That it may not be covered.”

    Пробуждая для мести Мой гнев,
    Я оставил ту кровь на голой скале,

    ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God:
    “Woe to the bloody city!
    I too will make the pyre great.

    Heap on the wood,
    Kindle the fire;
    Cook the meat well,
    Mix in the spices,
    And let the [b]cuts be burned up.

    Подложи дров, разведи огонь,
    отвари мясо, добавь приправу,
    и пусть обуглятся кости.

    “Then set the pot empty on the coals,
    That it may become hot and its bronze may burn,
    That its filthiness may be melted in it,
    That its scum may be consumed.

    Поставь котел на угли пустым,
    чтобы он разогрелся, и медь его раскалилась,
    чтобы грязь его в нем расплавилась,
    и ржавчина отгорела.

    She has [c]grown weary with [d]lies,
    And her great scum has not gone from her.
    Let her scum be in the fire!

    Нет, впустую Я утомлял Себя76:
    не сошла глубокая ржавчина.
    Так в огонь его вместе со ржавчиной!77

    In your filthiness is lewdness.
    Because I have cleansed you, and you were not cleansed,
    You will not be cleansed of your filthiness anymore,
    Till I have caused My fury to rest upon you.

    Твоя нечистота — это распутство. Когда Я пытался очистить тебя, ты не очистился, а теперь ты не очистишься до тех пор, пока Мой гнев на тебя не утихнет.

    I, the Lord, have spoken it;
    It shall come to pass, and I will do it;
    I will not hold back,
    Nor will I spare,
    Nor will I relent;
    According to your ways
    And according to your deeds
    [e]They will judge you,”
    Says the Lord God.’ ”

    Я, Господь, сказал это. Настало время Мне действовать. Я не буду сдерживаться, щадить и сожалеть. Ты будешь судим по твоим путям и делам», — возвещает Владыка Господь.

    The Prophet’s Wife Dies

    Also the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

    Было ко мне слово Господа:

    “Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with one stroke; yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, nor shall your tears run down.

    — Сын человеческий, Я одним ударом отниму у тебя усладу глаз твоих. Но не скорби, не сетуй и не проливай слез.

    Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head, and put your sandals on your feet; do not cover your [f]lips, and do not eat man’s bread of sorrow.”

    Стони тихо, не устраивай плача по умершим. Не снимай головной убор и сандалии, не закрывай нижнюю часть лица и не ешь пищу плакальщиков.

    So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died; and the next morning I did as I was commanded.

    Утром я говорил с народом, а вечером у меня умерла жена. На следующее утро я исполнил то, что мне было велено.

    And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things signify to us, that you behave so?”

    — Не скажешь ли, какое значение для нас в том, что ты делаешь?

    Then I answered them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

    Я сказал им:
    — Ко мне было слово Господа:

    ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, [g]your arrogant boast, the desire of your eyes, the [h]delight of your soul; and your sons and daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.

    Скажи дому Израиля: Так говорит Владыка Господь: «Я оскверню Свое святилище — крепость, которой вы гордитесь, усладу глаз ваших, которой жаждут ваши сердца. Оставленные вами сыновья и дочери падут от меча».

    And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your [i]lips nor eat man’s bread of sorrow.

    Вы будете делать так, как делал я. Вы не будете закрывать нижнюю часть лица и есть пищу плакальщиков.

    Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you shall neither mourn nor weep, but you shall pine away in your iniquities and mourn with one another.

    На головах у вас будут головные повязки, а на ногах — сандалии. Вы не будете ни скорбеть, ни сетовать, но станете чахнуть из-за своих грехов и тихо стонать.

    Thus Ezekiel is a sign to you; according to all that he has done you shall do; and when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord God.’ ”

    — Иезекииль будет вам знамением: вы будете делать так, как делал он. Когда это сбудется, вы узнаете, что Я — Владыка Господь.

    ‘And you, son of man — will it not be in the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and their glory, the desire of their eyes, and [j]that on which they set their minds, their sons and their daughters:

    А ты, сын человеческий, в тот день, когда Я отниму у них твердыню, их ликование и славу, усладу их глаз, к которой стремятся их сердца, и их сыновей и дочерей,

    that on that day one who escapes will come to you to let you hear it with your ears?

    в тот самый день придет уцелевший, чтобы рассказать тебе новости.

    On that day your mouth will be opened to him who has escaped; you shall speak and no longer be mute. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”

    Тогда твои уста откроются. Ты заговоришь с ним и не будешь больше хранить молчание. Ты будешь для них знамением, и они узнают, что Я — Господь.
