The Wicked Are Slain

Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a [a]deadly weapon in his hand.”

Тоді він скрикнув грімким голосом мені у вуха: «Наближайтеся, бичі міста, кожен зо знаряддям руйнування у руці!»

And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his [b]battle-ax in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn [c]at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

І ось прийшло шестеро мужів від верхніх воріт, що на півночі, кожен із знаряддям убивства в руці. Посеред них був один, одягнений у льняну одежу, з писарським приладом при боці. Увійшли вони й поставали коло мідяного жертовника.

Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the [d]temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;

Слава Бога Ізраїля піднялася з-над того херувима, на якім була, до порога дому. І він прикликав того, що був одягнений у льняну одежу і що при боці в нього був писарський прилад.

and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

І сказав йому Господь: «Пройди посеред міста, посеред Єрусалиму, та й поклади знак на чолі в людей, що зідхають і сумують із-за всіх гидот, що діються посеред нього.»

To the others He said in my [e]hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill;[f] do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.

А другим він сказав — так, що я чув: «Ідіте позад нього містом і бийте; нехай не жалує ваше око, не майте милосердя;

Utterly[g] slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the [h]temple.

старого і хлопця, дівицю, малечу й жіноцтво вбивайте на смерть; а з тих же, що мають на собі знак, не руште нікого. Та починайте від моєї святині.» І почали вони від старших мужів, що були перед храмом.

Then He said to them, “Defile the [i]temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.

Він сказав до них: «Оскверніть храм. Закидайте дворища трупом, а потім вийдете.» І вони вийшли і вбивали по місті.

So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”

Як вони били, зоставсь я один, упав на лице й закричав: «Ой Господи Боже! Невже ти вигубиш увесь останок Ізраїля, виливаючи твій гнів на Єрусалим?»

Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’

А він мені сказав: «Безбожність дому Ізраїля та Юди велика, вельми велика; країна повна крови, а місто повне насильства, бо вони кажуть: Покинув Господь країну, Господь не бачить.

And as for Me also, My eye will neither spare, nor will I have pity, but I will recompense their deeds on their own head.”

Оце ж і моє око не пощадить, і я не помилую. Оберну їхні вчинки на їхню ж голову.»

Just then, the man clothed with linen, who had the inkhorn at his side, reported back and said, “I have done as You commanded me.”

І ось тут чоловік, одягнений у льняну одіж, у якого при боці писарський прилад, звітував, кажучи: «Я зробив так, як ти мені наказав був.»
